Book excerpt: Based on currently available data, a unified model for the particle size distribution, particle density, and geometrical dispersion for the alumina particles in the exhaust of a Titan SRM plume in the stratosphere is presented. The particle size distribution is found to be trimodal with Sauter mean diameters of 0.056, 1.0, and 3.6 um for the small, medium, and large size modes, respectively. Nearly all the particles lie within the small size mode, but nearly all the mass lies in the large size mode. About two-thirds of the particle surface area available for heterogeneous chemical reactions is due to the large particle mode while most of the remaining surface area is due to the small particle mode. The light scattering characteristics of the plume were also explored. Mie scattering calculations were used to predict the local attenuation of the plume as a function of wavelength and the total attenuation of a beam of radiation through the plume making an arbitrary angle with respect to the axis of the plume and as a function of time after SRM passage for several wavelengths in ultraviolet, visible, and infrared spectral regions. These studies show that most of the attenuation is due to the large-size mode. An expression for the volume density of total area of the particles is derived in terms of known parameters and the Sauter mean diameter. Mie theory is then used to show that this Sauter mean diameter can be measured using a two-color transmissometer.

Book excerpt: Three propellants with aluminum/silicon weight percentages of 18/0%, 13.5/4.5%, and 12/6% were fired in a subscale motor to determine if the plume infrared signature could be reduced without a significant loss in specific impulse. Spectral measurements from 2.5 to 5.5 micrometers and thermal measurements from 3.5 to 5.0 micrometers were made. Plume particle size measurements showed that only particles with small diameters (less than 1.93 micrometers) were present with any significant volume. Replacing a portion of the aluminum in a highly metallized solid propellant with silicon was found to eliminate the Al2O3 in favor of SiO2 and Al6SiOl3, without any change in particulate mass concentration or any large change in particle size distribution. These particulates were found to have significantly lower absorptivity than Al2O3. An additional investigation was conducted to determine the particle size distribution at the nozzle entrance. Malvern ensemble scattering, phase-Doppler single particle scattering and laser transmittance measurements made through windows in the combustion chamber at the nozzle entrance indicated that large particles were present (to 250 micrometers). However, most of the mass of the particles was contained in particles with diameters smaller than 5 micrometers. Approximate calculations made with the measured data showed that if 100 micrometers particles are present with the smoke (particles with diameters less than 2 micrometers) they could account for only approximately 10% of the article volume.

Book excerpt: Two phenomena observed during plume diagnostic measurements acquired during simulated altitude chamber tests of aluminum-loaded solid-propellant rocket motors are discussed, and analytical results are presented. The results of a line-by-line calculation of the aluminum chloride (AlCl) feature are discussed and compared with high-resolution ultraviolet (UV) spectral data. Selected plume radiation measurements are reviewed, and evidence of searchlight emission is presented. Two searchlight modeling techniques are demonstrated and compared with motor test data. Book excerpt: Particle sizing interferometer measurement of particle size distributions, velocity and number density in samples of rocket propellant exhaust is described. Signal visibility and scattered intensity for individual particles was measured for a nominal size range of 0.3 to 6 micrometers. Calibration tests of the instrument were obtained by firing small propellant samples into a 20-cu cm chamber and comparing the measured particle size distributions with those obtained from estimates using multiple wavelength transmissometers and a commercial optical particle counter. Particle sizing interferometer estimates of particle size distributions and number densities required the development of models which could account for sample space dependence on particle size and illuminating fringe contrast variation. Results obtained by using these models on particle size data from calibration and rocket motor test firings show the need for well-controlled insitu perturbationless particle size measuring techniques for hostile environments.

Book excerpt: A safety analysis of aluminized solid rocket propellant burning at atmospheric pressure is desired. An attempt is made to simulate propellant levitating above a substrate due to the thrust generated by its plume using a motorized support apparatus. This study investigates the temperatures of the plume and burning aluminum droplets with varying substrates, propellant slug diameters, propellant formulations, and gap heights. Two spectrometers were used to collect broadband and narrowband spectral emissions from the plume underneath and immediately adjacent to the propellant-substrate gap. Spectral data were collected as the apparatus passed horizontally through the gap in order to characterize temperatures as a function of flame depth. The broadband spectra were fitted to a linearized Planck's function to estimate gas temperature for several values of emissivity, while the blue-green narrowband spectra were fitted to aluminum monoxide line strength files to calculate the temperature of the burning aluminum. Results indicate the aluminum monoxide flame temperature is generally hotter than the surrounding plume temperature. Calculated temperatures showed a generally flat trend as a function of depth from the center of the plume. Gas temperatures varied wildly and displayed no clear correlation with test variables. Post-test observations indicate that high-temperature chemical reactions within the substrate, phase changes, and the insulating effect of deposited alumina are likely causes for unpredictability.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Particle characterization is used for burn rate and rheology predictions for solid rocket propellants. This report compares the burn rate of solid rocket propellants to various measurement techniques to determine the best routine characterization parameter for burn rate predictions. These measurement techniques include surface area measurements, diameter measurements from ensemble light scattering, light blocking, sieving techniques, and a new particle solvolysis technique. The diameter techniques also provided data for surface area calculations. Propellants containing HMX, AP, and AN were burned in a window bomb at pressures ranging from 500 psig to 2000 psig. The results indicate a volume dependent process for HMX burning, a surface area dependent process for AN, and a surface area dependent process affected by the particle distribution for AP. For burn rate prediction, routine measurements of weight median diameters are recommended for HMX, surface area measurements or ensemble light scattering weight median diameters are recommended for AP, and surface area measurements are recommended for AN. Keywords: Particle characterization, Burn rate predictions, Measurement techniques, HMX, AP, AN, Solid rocket propellants, Window bomb.

Book excerpt: This book is focused primarily on polymer nanocomposites, based on the author's research experience as well as open literature. The environmental health and safety aspects of nanomaterials and polymer nanocomposites, risk assessment and safety standards, and fire toxicity of polymer nanocomposites, are studied. In the final chapter, a brief overview of opportunities, trends, and challenges of polymer nanocomposites are included. Throughout the book, the theme is developed that polymer nanocomposites are a whole family of polymeric materials whose properties are capable of being tailored to meet specific applications. This volume serves as a general introduction to students and researchers just entering the field and to scholars from other subfields seeking information.
