Book excerpt: Excerpt from Characteristics of Radiation Pyrometers A Fery mirror pyrometer, however, calibrated at temperatures in the region 500 to I 500 C could not be used to determine the apparent temperature of the sun, for example, without a careful consideration of the corrections for the selective re ection of the gold, because the maximum portion of the solar energy is confined to the region of the selectivity of gold. The apparent tempera tures measured would be far smaller than the true apparent tem peratures. Even at a temperature of the black body of 4000 C the gold mirror re ects but 87 per cent 0f the total energy falling upon it, and from the slope of the curve of Fig. 5 it is seen that at the sun's temperature (say 6000 C) the re ection coefficient will be somewhere in the neighborhood of 60 to 70 per cent. A re ec tion coefficient of 68 per cent means an error in temperature measurement of some 500 at 6000 C. Without doubt a silver or platinum mirror would be found much more satisfactory than the gold mirror for these high temperatures, but even these mate rials could not be used without applying large corrections. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pyrometry: A Practical Treatise on the Measurement of High Temperatures The next step in advance was the introduction of the expansion pyrometer by John Daniel] in 1822. The elongation Of a platinum rod, encased in plum bago, was made to operate a magnifying device, which moved a pointer over a scale divided so as to read temperatures directly. Although inaccurate as com pared with modern instruments; this pyrometer was the first to give a continuous reading, and required no personal attention. The expansion pyrometer - with different expanding substances - is still used to. A limited extent. The year 1822 was also marked by Seebeck's discovery of thermo-electricity. The generation Of a current of electricity by a heated junction Of two metals, increasing with the temperature, appeared to afford a simple and satisfactory basis for a pyrometer, and Becquerel constructed an instrument on these lines in 1826. Pouillet and others also endeavoured to measure temperatures by the thermo-electric method, but partly owing to the use of unsuitable junctions, and partly to the lack of reliable galvanometers, these workers failed to Obtain concordant results. The method was for all practical purposes abandoned until 1886, when its revival in reliable form led to the enormous extension Of the use of pyrometers witnessed during recent years.
