Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A summary is given of the aerosol filtration models for membrane filter media. While the capillary tube model has been shown to accurately predict the particle collection characteristics of Nuclepore membrane filters, the fibrous filter model gives more accurate prediction for the conventional solvent-cast membranes. Excellent agreement has been found between the effective fiber diameter used in the model and the diameter of the fiber-like structures in the conventional membrane. Results are presented showing the comparisons of the measured filter penetration with the theoretically predicted value for various particle sizes and filtration velocities. Excellent agreement has been obtained both in the degree of particle penetration through the filter and the location of the most penetrating particle size. For the conventional membranes the most penetrating particle size is typically in the range of 0.05 to 0.2 um diameter.
