Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical Character Recognition (OCR) shows great potential for rapid data entry, but has limited success when applied to the Arabic language. Normal OCR problems are compounded by the right-to-left nature of Arabic and because the script is largely connected. This research investigates current approaches to the Arabic character recognition problem and innovates a new approach. The main work involves a Haar-Cascade Classifier (HCC) approach modified for the first time for Arabic character recognition. This technique eliminates the problematic steps in the pre-processing and recognition phases in additional to the character segmentation stage. A classifier was produced for each of the 61 Arabic glyphs that exist after the removal of diacritical marks. These 61 classifiers were trained and tested on an average of about 2,000 images each. A Multi-Modal Arabic Corpus (MMAC) has also been developed to support this work. MMAC makes innovative use of the new concept of connected segments of Arabic words (PAWs) with and without diacritics marks. These new tokens have significance for linguistic as well as OCR research and applications and have been applied here in the post-processing phase. A complete Arabic OCR application has been developed to manipulate the scanned images and extract a list of detected words. It consists of the HCC to extract glyphs, systems for parsing and correcting these glyphs and the MMAC to apply linguistic constrains. The HCC produces a recognition rate for Arabic glyphs of 87%. MMAC is based on 6 million words, is published on the web and has been applied and validated both in research and commercial use.

Book excerpt: The international multi-topic conference IMTIC 2008 was held in Pakistan during April 11–12, 2008. It was a joint venture between Mehran University, Jamshoro, Sindh and Aalborg University, Esbjerg, Denmark. Apart from the two-day main event, two workshops were also held: the Workshop on Creating Social Semantic Web 2.0 Information Spaces and the Workshop on Wireless Sensor Networks. Two hundred participants registered for the main conference from 24 countries and 43 papers were presented; the two workshops had overwhelming support and over 400 delegates registered. IMTIC 2008 served as a platform for international scientists and the engineering community in general, and in particular for local scientists and the engineering c- munity to share and cooperate in various fields of interest. The topics presented had a reasonable balance between theory and practice in multidisciplinary topics. The c- ference also had excellent topics covered by the keynote speeches keeping in view the local requirements, which served as a stimulus for students as well as experienced participants. The Program Committee and various other committees were experts in their areas and each paper went through a double-blind peer review process. The c- ference received 135 submissions of which only 46 papers were selected for presen- tion: an acceptance rate of 34%.

Download or read book Fundamentals in Handwriting Recognition written by Sebastiano Impedovo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many years researchers in the field of Handwriting Recognition were considered to be working in an area of minor importance in Pattern Recog nition. They had only the possibility to present the results of their research at general conferences such as the ICPR or publish their papers in journals such as some of the IEEE series or PR, together with many other papers generally oriented to the more promising areas of Pattern Recognition. The series of International Workshops on Frontiers in Handwriting Recog nition and International Conferences on Document Analysis and Recognition together with some special issues of several journals are now fulfilling the expectations of many researchers who have been attracted to this area and are involving many academic institutions and industrial companies. But in order to facilitate the introduction of young researchers into the field and give them both theoretically and practically powerful tools, it is now time that some high level teaching schools in handwriting recognition be held, also in order to unite the foundations of the field. Therefore it was my pleasure to organize the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Fundamentals in Handwriting Recognition that had its origin in many exchanges among the most important specialists in the field, during the International Workshops on Frontiers in Handwriting Recognition.
Book Synopsis The Optical Recognition of Printed Arabic Text by : Mohammad Bassam Haffar-Habbal
Download or read book The Optical Recognition of Printed Arabic Text written by Mohammad Bassam Haffar-Habbal and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Work on the recognition of Arabic characters has been relatively sparse. The recognition problem is divided into several sub problems and novel approaches are proposed for the solution of these sub problems. The problem of line segmentation of Arabic text with its special characters such as the presence of secondaries above and below the primary part is tackled. The problem of shadowed Arabic characters is also handled. A novel technique for contour tracing of Arabic characters is introduced. The problem of word segmentation of closed contours is also tackled. A novel approach to achieve word segmentation is introduced. It is called word segmentation after recognition. A major contribution is accomplished at the recognition level. Since an Arabic character can have any of four different forms namely the isolated form, the beginning form, the middle form and the ending form, the number of classes to be recognized increases from 28 to 112 different class. This thesis introduced a novel approach for Arabic form recognition using look ahead techniques. A second level of recognition is introduced. It is called secondary position recognition relative to the primary part. A third level of recognition is also introduced. This level detects the position of the Arabic character relative to the base line. Finally, a fourth level of recognition is introduced. This level applies the correlation concepts on the horizontal and vertical densities of the unknown segmented Arabic character. Then, the minimum distance criterion is utilized to select the matching character from the appropriate form library. In addition, several special case problems in the recognition of Arabic characters are introduced and solved. The obtained results are the following. The used features are structural. The size of data base is 150 characters. The classification is min. Euclidean distance criterion. The performance is 96.67 % recognition rate. The used characters are printed Arabic characters.

Book Synopsis Towards an Arabic Handwritten Recognition System Using Machine Learning Model by : Hassan Althobiati
Download or read book Towards an Arabic Handwritten Recognition System Using Machine Learning Model written by Hassan Althobiati and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical Character Recognition (OCR) is the process of identifying text in an image or a scanned document and convert it into a digital form. OCR systems have been used widely to convert images that have written content either printed or handwritten. Not only do they make viewing and sharing scanned documents easier, but they also allow searching through documents or images' content in a fast and successful manner. Over the course, a great number of approaches and techniques have been attempted to maximize the performance and reduce the error rate in multi-language OCR systems. However, Arabic language's recognition system still has some challenges and difficulties. The output of an Arabic Optical Character Recognition (AOCR) system is usually vague and unpredictable due to that fact that most Arabic characters are considered multi-object characters. Moreover, many systems and applications do not fully support Arabic language. Therefore, efforts and hard work should be done to implement a system that is able to fully support Arabic language, especially Arabic handwritten characters. Even though research shows good results of machine-printed texts, Arabic handwritten recognition still needs improvements and amendments. To avert the unreliability of handwritten recognition systems, three research studies were conducted. In addition, a unique dataset is built specifically to train and test the efficiency and reliability of the systems. First, a survey research is conducted to understand what the AOCR field has, and what have been done so far. After obtaining the required knowledge, the first Arabic Handwritten Optical Character Recognition (AHOCR) system is developed based on a boundary descriptor algorithm called Freeman chain code. The Freeman chain code is an external representation used to describe an object based on its boundaries. The well-known chain code was chosen because Arabic characters are written in a cursive style and Freeman chain code can provide some crucial information that can be used to measure the curviness of a character, such as perimeter and circularity. Because some Arabic characters have diacritics and dots, a bounding box, which is the smallest box containing a character, is used to capture all the small parts of a character and group them into one small glyph. It should be noted that the bounding box is the smallest possible box containing a character, including holes, dots and symbols. This method is responsible for dividing the entire image into small pieces called "glyphs". The system can recognize most Arabic characters, yet some cursive characters, where multiple cursive lines overlapped, were not identified correctly. Therefore, another AHOCR system is developed, and it is based on Freeman chain code and Tangent Line & Change in Tangent. The main aim of using this method is to measure the rate of change of a cursive line and divide the character into sub-objects. Therefore, the number of sub-objects determines the correct class of the character being checked. By using Tangent Line, the system was able to recognize curvy characters that cannot be recognized using the previous method of encoded Freeman chain code. It has been determined that the method of Tangent Line & Change in Tangent can correct most misclassifications that happened because of using Freeman chain code method. The need for a fast and reliable AHOCR system arose when the previous systems misclassified some characters. Also, calculating the Freeman chain code and measuring the change of rate is time consuming. Therefore, a third AHOCR system that uses machine learning model is developed based on Support Vector Machine (SVM). The system uses Normalized Central Moments (NCM) as well as Local Binary Patterns (LBP) as feature extraction to recognize isolated Arabic handwritten characters. Furthermore, the bounding box is also used in the pre-recognition stage to find the main body of each character along with any auxiliary parts that are associated with it. The proposed algorithm has proved that not only has a higher recognition rate, but also performs better when combining multiple features. Even though there were some difficulties when identifying similar characters, the overall recognition system appeared to be good enough comparing to the difficulties of Arabic language in general. This dissertation represents an extensive survey of Arabic language characters and its difficulties. Further, three AHOCR systems with different algorithms are described in detail to accurately identify isolated Arabic handwritten characters. It also provides a detailed explanation of the experimental results and discusses the limitations and future work
