Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chapters on the History of the Southern Pacific So far as the author knows there is no published study which discusses in detail the important business problems connected with the history of the Southern Pacific Railroad lines. Most of the books which contain references to the Southern Pacific or to the Central Pacific limit themselves to a few chapters upon the romantic aspects of their construction. The few works which treat of the later period confine themselves chiefly to particular episodes in Southern Pacific history, often with the deliberate attempt to discredit the railroad company. The truth is that most writers upon the Southern Pacific have relied upon the reports of the United States Pacific Railway Commission or on Bancroft's "History of California," and very few have done original work from source material. Yet the usable material dealing with the subject of Pacific railroads is abundant. The Southern Pacific has left a broad trail in California. The record of its doings is to be found in court reports; in state, city, and federal records; in the public testimony, or still better, in the private letters of owners or managers of company enterprises; in the reports of the company itself and of its engineers or other representatives; in pamphlets without number; in files of newspapers. It is true that much of the data is partisan and unreliable as to details. Yet a partisan statement is serviceable if one knows it to be partisan, and, if one has reliable information with which to check the unreliable, the extent of partisan exaggeration in a given case becomes itself a fact of no insignificant importance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Adventure in the South Pacific The present volume lays no claim to literary merit. Two young men, led to engage in the whale-fisheries, and spending five years in the employment, have oom piled from their log-books and their recollection a plain, unvarnished narrative of this period. The work is placed before the public as an account of localities few have visited, and the detail of an employment of which little is generally known. The chief effort in the way of style has been to give vivid descriptions, and make the reader the companion of the traveler. Aside from the information of the volume, it is enlivened by life on shipboard. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Past, the Present and the Future of the Pacific The Parent Government has been, unfortunately, too Oppressive towards us in its laws and policy, to enable many of us to boast of possessing much of this world's wealth. We have been made, ever since we resided on these Pacific shores, mere hewers of wood and drawers of water to the Government at Washington and our brethren on the Atlantic side of the continent. They have been our Oppressive taskmasters ever since we resided here, and we have served them most faithfully, and we shall never get free from their tyranny and oppression, until we take measures to de fine our position and defend ourselves. This is strong talk, but we mean all we say. Let not the United States Government forget the lesson our ancestors taught Great Britain, when she, in the pride of her power, forced them to define their position and to defend themselves. The result of that contest is now a matter of history, and we are all familiar with it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
