Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chapters on the Early History of Glastonbury Abbey In making a short contribution to the early history of Glastonbury Abbey I feel that I need offer no apology, as the old Tor itself, although 20 or 25 miles distant as the crow flies, is visible from my windows, and invites the attempt. More often than not it is draped in the mists that sweep up the Severn Sea from the north-west and lies half hid in the mirage of the moorlands. To write about the birth of Grlastonbury is to write about a creation that has sprung from the sea, that has grown up silently in the weird marshes and meres of the "sea-moor-saetas," and that loves to entangle itself in the magic mists of antiquity. Must we always adhere to the litera scripta in speaking of Glastonbury? It is the land of legend, romantic figures, and shadowy heroes, and there is sometimes more substance to be found in these, especially when place-names, topography, dedications, and the consentanea vox of antiquity confirm them, than in the litera scripta of the monastic scriptorium, where the greatest efforts of the Benedictine pens were directed to invent, to simulate, and to forge, so that the detective genius of a Stubbs can hardly winnow the true record from the false. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Feodary Of Glastonbury Abbey With the issue in this volume of the Feodary the Society has returned to the attack on the documentary history of Glaston bury Abbey. In this case the history is not that of a religious foundation, but rather of a great feudal landowner, whose rights and liabilities were very closely connected. Previous efforts include the printing of the Inquisition of Abbot Henry de Sully drawn up in 1189; and of the Rentalia of Abbots Ambresbury and Ford, dated 1235 - 1261, which formed Volume V of the Society's works. To this is now added a Feodary of the succeeding century. For permission to print this valuable document the Society is greatly indebted to the Curators of the Bodleian Library, and for the labour of editing to the Rev. F. W. Weaver and to Canon Mayo, of Long Burton, Dorset, who has contributed the Introduction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Glastonbury Three thousand miles away, across the Atlantic, in the south western part of England, is the town for which ours was named. It is an old and famous town was old and famous long before Columbus discovered America. It is famous because there was built the first Christian church in Britain. Many believe that it was built by Joseph of Arimathea, who came from Jerusalem in the year 60 A. D. To preach the gospel to the natives of Britain, who were then pagans. That little church has been burned and rebuilt more than once, but its ruins stand there now. Beside the little church, there was built a larger one, and a great monastery or abbey in which, for many years, was kept a famous school for boys and young men. St. Patrick of Ireland was once abbot of that school, for in those days all Christian churches were of the Catholic faith. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Last Abbot of Glastonbury and His Companions: An Historical Sketch The history 'of Glastonbury is the history of its abbey without its abbey Glastonbury were nothing.1 Even among those great ecclesias tical institutions, the Benedictine abbeys of medieval England, the history of Glastonbury has a Character all its own. I will not insult its venerable age, says a recent historian, by so much as contrasting it with the foundations of yesterday which arose under the influence of the Cistercian movement, for they play but a small part indeed in the history of this church and realm. Glastonbury is something more than N etley and Tintern, Rievaux and F oun tains. It is something more again than the Benedictine houses which arose at the bidding of the Norman Conqueror, of his race and of his companions; more than Selby and Battle. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The treatise on the early history of Glastonbury by the great twelfth century historian William of Malmesbury is a crucial source of our knowledge of Glastonbury in the Saxon period, and contains important evidence on the obscure origins of the abbey. Because it was recognised as such by the monks at the time, it was rewritten very soon after its composition to include new stories about the abbey's history and estates, a process which went on well into the thirteenth century. As a result, the best available texts contain a great deal which was not in William's original work, and although the problem has long been known, no full-scale attempt to disentangle the original work from the later editions has been attempted previously. Mr Scott provides an edition and translation of the text as it has come down to us, and, by reference to William's other works, prints a reconstruction of the original. His introduction is a study of William's own historical work, his sources and skills as a historian, followed by an examination of the motives for the reworking of the text and the factors which influenced the creation of the great Glastonbury legends: the apostolic foundation of the 'old church', the arrival of Joseph of Arimathea and the burial there of King Arthur.
