Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chapters of Diseases of the Ovaries: Translated, by Permission, From Kiwisch's Clinical Lectures on the Special Pathology and Treatment of the Diseases of Women; With Notes and an Appendix on the Operation of Ovariotomy I shall always recur with feelings of pride and grati fication to the pleasing reminiscence of having had the honour of corresponding with so many talented members of the profession of which I am a member; and that in nearly every instance my communications have been responded to with the greatest courtesy. From some I received valuable suggestions, from others valuable reports, which have enabled me to render the tables more complete than they would otherwise have been, and also to record many unpublished cases. To particularize would be an invidious distinction, and it is but a poor duty I can perform to all such to tender them my warmest and best thanks. Book excerpt: In an era of promising advances in cancer research, there are considerable and even alarming gaps in the fundamental knowledge and understanding of ovarian cancer. Researchers now know that ovarian cancer is not a single disease-several distinct subtypes exist with different origins, risk factors, genetic mutations, biological behaviors, and prognoses. However, persistent questions have impeded progress toward improving the prevention, early detection, treatment, and management of ovarian cancers. Failure to significantly improve morbidity and mortality during the past several decades is likely due to several factors, including the lack of research being performed by specific disease subtype, lack of definitive knowledge of the cell of origin and disease progression, and incomplete understanding of genetic and non-genetic risk factors. Ovarian Cancers examines the state of the science in ovarian cancer research, identifies key gaps in the evidence base and the challenges to addressing those gaps, considers opportunities for advancing ovarian cancer research, and examines avenues for translation and dissemination of new findings and communication of new information to patients and others. This study makes recommendations for public- and private-sector efforts that could facilitate progress in reducing the incidence of morbidity and mortality from ovarian cancers.

This book was released on 2014-01-25 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was written by many outstanding investigators who have spent decades to study different aspects of blood‐tissue barrier function. They have summarized some of the latest and fascinating development in their fields of research including the blood‐brain barrier, the blood‐retinal barrier, the gut barrier, the blood‐biliary barrier, the blood‐follicle barrier, the blood‐epididymis barrier, the blood‐testis barrier, the tight junction barrier in general as well as barriers in the female reproductive tract. Included are also chapters that focus on topics that are physiologically applicable to all blood‐tissue barriers. Many of these chapters also include information on specific human diseases, such as pathological changes of the gut barrier that cause bowel disorders resulting from inflammation of the epithelial lining in the intestine, and infertility in men as a result of disruption of the blood‐epididymal and/or blood‐testis barriers; and on new therapeutic approaches (e.g., drug delivery across the blood‐brain and the blood‐retinal barriers).
