Book Synopsis The General Chapter in a Religious Institute by : Elizabeth M. Cotter
Download or read book The General Chapter in a Religious Institute written by Elizabeth M. Cotter and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2008 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the historical antecedents of the concept of general chapter, the supreme authority in an institute of consecrated life. This provides the basis for an examination of the contemporary understanding of the nature of its power and authority, as portrayed in the 1983 Code of Canon Law. The general chapter is analysed in terms of its juridic status, collegial nature, participative character and representative function as well as its dynamic aspects and faith dimension. The author applies the findings to one institute of consecrated life, Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary Loreto Branch. This application provides an example of the challenges inherent in working participatively and collaboratively within a hierarchical structure. Because consecrated life has an inalienable ecclesial dimension, understanding authority and power and their exercise in institutes of consecrated life has relevance for understanding authority and its exercise in other organs of authority at all levels in the church.

This book was released on 2014-02-24 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Guide offers practical information regarding general chapters of religious congregations. It will be of interest not only to facilitators but also to congregational leadership teams and to those responsible for the planning and preparation of chapters. It will be of interest also to those who take part in chapters as either participants or staff. The Guide is both factual and creative. Discernment is the underlying principle of the step-by-step instructions for the main stages of a chapter, beginning with chapter preparation. The Guide includes various processes and dynamics and a range of resources to promote effective participation by all members at a chapter.Over many years, the co-authors have had wide experience of facilitation of general chapters in different parts of the world. Through GLOIR, an agency sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy and the Holy Union Sisters and devoted to providing education and training in leadership and group work, they collaborated in giving workshops in East Africa for the training of general chapter facilitators. This Guide contains material used in these Workshops. As a result of this training, there is now a pool of East African women religious available for general chapter facilitation. In the interests of making the Guide available to as many readers as possible particularly on the African continent, the co-authors have waived their right to royalties. However, to offset the many pages used in photocopying materials during the training workshops, readers of the Guide are invited to make a donation to a tree-planting project of their choice or to one of the similar projects named at the front of the Guide.

Book excerpt: Keeping Religious Institutions Secure explores the unique vulnerabilities that churches, synagogues, and mosques face in regards to security, making them attractive to criminals who see them as easy targets. The text illustrates why all places of worship should think about security and the types of breaches that can drive people away. The book focuses on the most frequent security concerns experienced by houses of worship, including embezzlement, vandalism, assault, hate crime, and in rare cases, an active shooter—and how to help prevent them from occurring. Beginning with an overview of the basic security concepts and principles that can enhance the security of any religious facility, it then delves deeply into the particular security concerns of houses of worship, including the use of volunteers, protecting religious leaders, ensuring safety for children and teens, interacting with local law enforcement, handling the media, and much more. Covers security best practices that are adaptable to any type of religious institution. Addresses the key security measures—physical, electronic, environmental, and procedural—for protecting people and facilities. Includes guidance on identifying threats and vulnerabilities and instituting countermeasures for deterring crime and violence.
