Book excerpt: No manual can provide the fatigue investigator with a complete step-by-step detailed procedure which is valid for the statistical planning of experiments whatever the situation. In fact, only certain very simple fatigue test programs fit precisely into the specific formats required for wellestablished planned experiments, such as the completely randomized design (CRD) and the randomized complete block (RCB) design, [1]. Generally these simple fatigue test programs pertain to either elementary comparative tests (for example, comparing the fatigue life of Material A versus Material B), or to quality assurance tests (namely, the generation of certain fatigue data under well-defined test conditions). On the other hand, most (exploratory) research programs involve one or more (sometimes subtle) constraints peculiar to the specific situation, that is, to the given material processing, specimen preparation, test machine, environment, or whatever. Such constraints often preclude elementary statistical analysis of the resulting data and may even present difficulties to a trained statistician, particularly if he is consulted only after the tests have been conducted. But whatever the nature and the complexity of the given fatigue test situation, there are certain design of experiments fundamentals which must appear in the planning and conduct of any competent experimental program. It is the objective of this chapter of the manual to state these fundamentals (presented in italics in the following paragraph) and to illustrate their application in a few example situations. For further specific references to the design of experiments, see Refs 2, 3, and 4.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue Testing and Analysis of Results discusses fundamental concepts of fatigue testing and results analysis. The book begins with a description of the symbols and nomenclature selected for the present book, mainly those proposed by the ASTM Committee E-9 on Fatigue. Fatigue testing methods are then discussed including routine tests, short-life and long-life tests, cumulative-damage tests, and abbreviated and accelerated tests. Separate chapters cover fatigue testing machines and equipment; instruments and measuring devices; and test pieces used in fatigue testing. The factors affecting test results are considered, including material, types of stressing, test machine, environment, and testing technique. The final two chapters cover the planning of test programs and the presentation of results. Test program planning involves the statistical design of a test series; specification and sampling of test pieces; and choice of test pieces, testing machines, and test conditions. The chief purpose of most fatigue tests is the experimental determination of the relation between the endurance and the magnitude of the applied stress range for the material and the specimen under consideration, and final results can be condensed into a table, graph, or analytical expression.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mechanics of Fatigue addresses the range of topics concerning damage, fatigue, and fracture of engineering materials and structures. The core of this resource builds upon the synthesis of micro- and macro-mechanics of fracture. In micromechanics, both the modeling of mechanical phenomena on the level of material structure and the continuous approach are based on the use of certain internal field parameters characterizing the dispersed micro-damage. This is referred to as continuum damage mechanics. The author develops his own theory for macromechanics, called analytical fracture mechanics. This term means the system cracked body - loading or loading device - is considered as a mechanical system and the tools of analytical (rational) mechanics are applied thoroughly to describe crack propagation until the final failure. Chapter discuss: preliminary information on fatigue and engineering methods for design of machines and structures against failures caused by fatigue fatigue crack nucleation, including microstructural and continuous models theory of fatigue crack propagation fatigue crack growth in linear elastic materials subject to dispersed damage fatigue cracks in elasto-plastic material, including crack growth retardation due to overloading as well as quasistationary approximation fatigue and related phenomena in hereditary solids application of the theory fatigue crack growth considering environmental factors unidirectional fiber composites with ductile matrix and brittle, initially continuous fibers laminate composites Mechanics of Fatigue serves students dealing with mechanical aspects of fatigue, conducting research in fracture mechanics, structural safety, mechanics of composites, as well as modern branches of mechanics of solids and structures.
