Download or read book Chapman the Sailor's Lexicon written by W. H. Smyth and published by . This book was released on 2005-04-01 with total page 744 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1867, this classic digest is still used by the foremost writers of both maritime non-fiction and fiction, and served as the major reference for Patrick O'Brian (Master and Commander). It includes 15,000 entries in dictionary form that constitute an encyclopaedic collection of nautical words and phrases. Some of these remain common; others appear in contemporary literature, if not lingo. From "afforciament" (an antiquated term for a fortress) through "zopissa" (tar or pitch scraped off the bottoms of old vessels), and encompassing every aspect of ships and the sea, this compilation is more than a fascinating period piece; it is an invaluable tool for anyone with an enthusiasm for maritime life or an interest in the etymology of the English language.
Book Synopsis Shanghaiing Sailors by : Mark Strecker
Download or read book Shanghaiing Sailors written by Mark Strecker and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-05-19 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Shaghaiing," or forcing a man to join the crew of a merchant ship against his will, plagued seafarers the world over between 1849 and 1915. Perpetrators were known as "crimps," and they had no respect for a man's education, social status, race, religion, or seafaring experience. The merchant ships were involved in the opium, tea and gold trades, and the practice was spurred by the opening of the Suez Canal. A major reason for it was a shortage of sailors and the unwillingness of seamen to sail on certain types of ships. They suffered from great deprivations, all for a paltry sum usually squandered during shore leave. Navies and pirates had their own form of shanghaiing called impressment. This work explores the rich history of shanghaiing and impressment with a focus on victims and also considers the 19th century seafarer and the circumstances that made shanghaiing so lucrative.

Book Synopsis Black Lives in the English Archives, 1500–1677 by : Imtiaz Habib
Download or read book Black Lives in the English Archives, 1500–1677 written by Imtiaz Habib and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Containing an urgently needed archival database of historical evidence, this volume includes both a consolidated presentation of the documentary records of black people in Tudor and Stuart England, and an interpretive narrative that confirms and significantly extends the insights of current theoretical excursus on race in early modern England. Here for the first time Imtiaz Habib collects the scattered references to black people-whether from Africa, India or America-in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century England, and arranges them into a systematic, chronological descriptive index. He offers an extended historical and theoretical interpretation of the records in six chapters, which serve as an introductory guide to the index even as they articulate a specific argument about the meaning of the records. Both the archival information and interpretive scholarship provide a strong framework from which future historical debates on race in early modern England can proceed.
Book Synopsis The Battles at Plattsburgh: September 11, 1814 by : Keith A. Herkalo
Download or read book The Battles at Plattsburgh: September 11, 1814 written by Keith A. Herkalo and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2012-05-22 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both Roosevelt and Churchill recognized the importance of the land and naval battles of Plattsburgh. Many other, more famous, engagements were ruses meant to divert U.S. troops away from the prize Plattsburgh would afford: a clear pathway into New England. If not for the exemplary skills of two young military officers, Commodore Macdonough and General Macomb, and the force they commanded, regular army and naval personnel, New York and Vermont Militia, Native Americans, Veteran Exempts and boys from the local school, the war and the nation would have been lost. Using original source documents, author Keith Herkalo retells the battles at Plattsburgh, the key battles of the War of 1812.
