Book Synopsis Chaos Bound by : N. Katherine Hayles
Download or read book Chaos Bound written by N. Katherine Hayles and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hayles’s point is that the almost simultaneous appearance of interest in complex systems across many disciplines―physics, mathematics, biology, information theory, literature, literary theory―signals a profound paradigm and epistemological shift. She calls the new paradigm ‘orderly disorder.’ This is a timely, informative, and enormously thought-provoking book. — Nancy Craig Simmons ― American Literature N. Katherine Hayles here investigates parallels between contemporary literature and critical theory and the science of chaos. She finds in both scientific and literary discourse new interpretations of chaos, which is seen no longer as disorder but as a locus of maximum information and complexity. She examines structures and themes of disorder in The Education of Henry Adams, Doris Lessing’s Golden Notebook, and works by Stanislaw Lem. Hayles shows how the writings of poststructuralist theorists including Barthes, Lyotard, Derrida, Serres, and de Man incorporate central features of chaos theory.

Book Synopsis In the Midst of Chaos by : Bonnie J. Miller-McLemore
Download or read book In the Midst of Chaos written by Bonnie J. Miller-McLemore and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2019-03-01 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the daily practices of life with children can shape our faith In the Midst of Chaos explores parenting as spiritual practice, building on Bonnie J. Miller-McLemore's fresh conceptions of children from her book Let the Children Come. She questions conventional perceptions that spiritual practices require silence, solitude, and uninterrupted prayer and that assume a life unburdened by care of others. She is both honest about the difficulties and attentive to the blessings present in everyday life and demonstrates that the life of faith encompasses children and the adults who care for them. Miller-McLemore explores how parents might use seven daily practices, such as play, reading, chores, and saying goodbye or goodnight as rich opportunities to shape both parent and child morally and spiritually. Through these experiences, she shows how the very care of children forms and reforms the faith of adults themselves, contrary to the belief that adults must form children. In the Midst of Chaos also goes beyond the typical focus on individual self-fulfillment by tackling difficult questions of social justice and mutuality in the ways families live together. Readers will find in this book an invitation to love those around them in the midst of life's craziness and to live more deeply in grace.
Download or read book Chaos Under Heaven written by Josh Rogin and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2021-03-09 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The explosive, behind-the-scenes story of Donald Trump’s high-stakes confrontation with Beijing, from an award-winning Washington Post columnist and peerless observer of the U.S.–China relationship There was no calm before the storm. Donald Trump’s surprise electoral victory shattered the fragile understanding between Washington and Beijing, putting the most important relationship of the twenty-first century in the hands of a novice who had bitterly attacked China from the campaign trail. Almost as soon as he entered office, Trump brought to a boil the long-simmering rivalry between the two countries, while also striking up a “friendship” with Chinese president Xi Jinping — whose manipulations of his American counterpart would undermine the White House’s already disjointed response to the historic challenge of a rising China. All the while, Trump’s own officials fought to steer U.S. policy from within. By the time the COVID-19 pandemic erupted in Wuhan, Trump’s love-hate relationship with Xi had sparked a trade war, while Xi’s aggression had pushed the world to the brink of a new Cold War. But their quarrel had also forced a long-overdue reckoning within the United States over China’s audacious foreign-influence operations, horrific human rights abuses, and creeping digital despotism. Ironically, this awakening was one of the biggest foreign-policy victories of Trump’s fractious term in office. Filled with shocking revelations drawn from Josh Rogin’s unparalleled access to top U.S. officials from the White House and deep within the country’s foreign policy machine, Chaos Under Heaven reveals an administration at war with itself during perhaps our most urgent hour.

Book Synopsis The Psychological Meaning of Chaos by : Frank Masterpasqua
Download or read book The Psychological Meaning of Chaos written by Frank Masterpasqua and published by Amer Psychological Assn. This book was released on 1997 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation The Psychological Meaning of Chaos: Translating Theory Into Practice introduces practicing psychologists to the concepts, implications, and applications of the chaos theories that have revolutionized scientists' concept of the physical world over the past 30 years. This new way of seeing - variously called chaos, nonlinear dynamical systems theory, deterministic chaos, and the broader sciences of complexity - stands in sharp contrast to the linear, reductionistic models that have dominated most psychological thinking. In this new model, unpredictability and instability are accepted as intrinsic to complex systems and essential in any transformative process. Chaos is seen as a healthy and essential part of the creation process, without which new order is impossible. The implications of this new model of systems dynamics for understanding the human change process are enormous. In this book, group and family therapists, developmentalists, and researchers describe the impact that chaos and complexitytheories have on their understanding of human change and their work to promote it. Chaos theory represents the greatest challenge to scientific thinking in this century. It has great potential for psychology, because it offers a model for complex behavior that resonates more closely with psychologists' understanding of the vicissitudes of human change.

Book Synopsis Africa in Chaos by : George B. N. Ayittey
Download or read book Africa in Chaos written by George B. N. Ayittey and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a follow-up to his ground-breaking "Africa Betrayed, " George Ayittey takes up the plight of Africa at the end of the twentieth century. Former UN Secretary General Boutros-Boutros Ghali once said that Africa was in danger of becoming the lost continent and, on this point, Ayittey thoroughly agrees. As he begins to see countries like Nigeria go over the edge of economic and social disaster, Ayittey uses his formidable powers of analysis to look at the political economy of Africa, the incursion of foreign powers and the relationship of Africa to the world market. He contrasts the indigenous systems of government that existed in Africa before the arrival of Europeans with the colonial and post-colonial systems that were forced on the country and the effect these systems have had on Africa s inability to move forward. Ayittey s view is dark and, as always, his stinging conclusions will infuriate some and invigorate others. Certain to create controversy, "Africa in Chaos" is a must-read for fans of Ayittey s earlier work as well as anyone interested in the world economic scene today. "

Book Synopsis The Essence Of Chaos by : Flavio Lorenzelli
Download or read book The Essence Of Chaos written by Flavio Lorenzelli and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of chaotic systems has become a major scientific pursuit in recent years, shedding light on the apparently random behaviour observed in fields as diverse as climatology and mechanics. InThe Essence of Chaos Edward Lorenz, one of the founding fathers of Chaos and the originator of its seminal concept of the Butterfly Effect, presents his own landscape of our current understanding of the field. Lorenz presents everyday examples of chaotic behaviour, such as the toss of a coin, the pinball's path, the fall of a leaf, and explains in elementary mathematical strms how their essentially chaotic nature can be understood. His principal example involved the construction of a model of a board sliding down a ski slope. Through this model Lorenz illustrates chaotic phenomena and the related concepts of bifurcation and strange attractors. He also provides the context in which chaos can be related to the similarly emergent fields of nonlinearity, complexity and fractals. As an early pioneer of chaos, Lorenz also provides his own story of the human endeavour in developing this new field. He describes his initial encounters with chaos through his study of climate and introduces many of the personalities who contributed early breakthroughs. His seminal paper, "Does the Flap of a Butterfly's Wing in Brazil Set Off a Tornado in Texas?" is published for the first time.
