Book excerpt: In Yemen, where current poverty is combined with a rich cultural heritage, the distinctions between the traditional and the modern are particularly difficult. First published in 1979, this is a study of social change as experienced and perceived by the women of San’a, the capital city of North Yemen. It presents a synthesised view of the process of change rather than focusing on the issues of exploitation and emancipation, and draws upon observations of women’s daily routine and ritual activities as well as the media and the provocative insights of Yemeni poets. The veil is the focus of the study because it can be seen as a symbol of the contradictions inherent in Yemeni society, not just about the female but also about all social relations. It can be interpreted as both an instrument of oppression and the incitement of liberation and is thus illustrative of deep cultural ambiguities. This book will be of interest to those studying women, gender, Islam, the Middle East and anthropology.

Book Synopsis Rethinking Muslim Women and the Veil: Challenging Historical & Modern Stereotypes by : Katherine Bullock
Download or read book Rethinking Muslim Women and the Veil: Challenging Historical & Modern Stereotypes written by Katherine Bullock and published by IIIT. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until now the bulk of the literature about the veil has been written by outsiders who do not themselves veil. This literature often assumes a condescending tone about veiled women, assuming that they are making uninformed decisions choices about veiling makes them subservient to a patriarchal culture and religion. “Rethinking Muslim Women and the Veil” offers an alternative viewpoint, based on the thoughts and experiences of Muslim women themselves. This is the first time a clear and concise book-length argument has been made for the compatibility between veiling and modernity. Katherine Bullock uncovers positive aspects of the veil that are frequently not perceived by outsiders. “Rethinking Muslim Women and the Veil” looks at the colonial roots of the negative Western stereotype of the veil. It presents interviews with Muslim women to discover their thoughts and experiences with the veil in Canada. The book also offers a positive theory of veiling. The author argues that in consumer capitalist cultures, women can find wearing the veil a liberation from the stifling beauty game that promotes unsafe and unhealthy ideal body images for women. This book also includes an extensive bibliography on topics related to Muslim women and the veil.

Cars are working again, guns are firing, there’s even electricity, but still they find themselves traveling through time. With each event, it seems they're getting closer to their original eras. The world looks to be healing itself, and as long as they stick together, they believe they’ll make it through. The only problem is, if their theories are correct, at some point they will have to let each other go to return to their own year where it all began. Hope prevails, but uncertainty continues to rear its ugly head. Will it ever be over? And if it does end, will they be able to reunite with their future selves?
Book Synopsis For Love of the Real by : Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee
Download or read book For Love of the Real written by Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee and published by The Golden Sufi Center. This book was released on 2015-11-01 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee’s explanation in For Love of the Real of how to turn away from self-centeredness in the face of reality will appeal to readers who seek to lead a meaningful life." —H.H. DALAI LAMA At the root of every mystical calling is the search for what is Real. For Love of the Real follows this call, detailing the inner journey to Absolute Truth. Readers are guided through traditional experiences of the path—emptiness and the void, oneness, and communion with nature, for example. Particular direction is given for how contemporary seekers can—and must—engage with challenges unique to our times, such as extreme materialism and ecological devastation. For Love of the Real responds to the vital need for humanity to remember its own divine nature and restore mystical truth as the foundation of our inner and outer lives. Based upon forty years of following the mystical path, Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee grounds this work in his own inner experiences and spiritual scripture. This is an intense evocation of the contribution that spiritual awareness can make, a clear and compelling call for humanity to return to the Real. "A penetrating, heartfelt look into Absolute Reality..." —LAMA PALDEN, Buddhist teacher and founder of Sukhasiddhi Foundation "Just what we need within the context of our ordinary lives in this modern day and age." —ARI GOLDFIELD, Buddhist teacher, author, and psychotherapist "... its message speaks to people from many different traditions and backgrounds who aspire to lead lives of greater meaning, fulfillment, and depth. [The] emphasis on such topics as emptiness and manifestation, the inseparability of relative and ultimate reality, our utter interconnectedness, and the transformative power of love, and his call to service, echo teachings dear to my own tradition of vajrayana Buddhism. Like Llewellyn, I believe that a shift of consciousness is possible, and in fact essential, if we are to regain what we have lost and heal our connection with the sacred, with mother earth, and with our fellow beings." —ACHARYA JUDY LIEF, Naropa University Buddhist teacher and author in the Tibetan Buddhist and Shambhala traditions
Book Synopsis Women in the Middle East by : Nikki R. Keddie
Download or read book Women in the Middle East written by Nikki R. Keddie and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2012-08-09 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by a pioneer in the field of Middle Eastern women's history, Women in the Middle East is a concise, comprehensive, and authoritative history of the lives of the region's women since the rise of Islam. Nikki Keddie shows why hostile or apologetic responses are completely inadequate to the diversity and richness of the lives of Middle Eastern women, and she provides a unique overview of their past and rapidly changing present. The book also includes a brief autobiography that recounts Keddie's political activism as one of the first women in Middle East Studies. Positioning women within their individual economic situations, identities, families, and geographies, Women in the Middle East examines the experiences of women in the Ottoman Empire and Turkey, in Iran, and in all the Arab countries. Keddie discusses the interaction of a changing Islam with political, cultural, and socioeconomic developments. In doing so, she shows that, like other major religions, Islam incorporated ideas and practices of male superiority but also provoked challenges to them. Keddie breaks with notions of Middle Eastern women as faceless victims, and assesses their involvement in the rise of modern nationalist, socialist, and Islamist movements. While acknowledging that conservative trends are strong, she notes that there have been significant improvements in Middle Eastern women's suffrage, education, marital choice, and health.

Book Synopsis Towards a Global History of Domestic and Caregiving Workers by :
Download or read book Towards a Global History of Domestic and Caregiving Workers written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-05-26 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Domestic and caregiving work has been at the core of human existence throughout history. Poorly paid or even unpaid, this work has been assigned to women in most societes and occasionally to men often as enslaved, indentures, "adopted" workers. While some use domestic service as training for their own future independent households, others are confined to it for life and try to avoid damage to their identities (Part One). Employment conditions are even worse in colonizer-colonized dichotomies, in which the subalternized have to run the households of administrators who believe they are running an empire (Part Two). Societies and states set the discriminatory rules, those employed develop strategies of resistance or self-protection (Part Three). A team of international scholars addresses these issues globally with a deep historical background. Contributors are: Ally Shireen, Eileen Boris, Dana Cooper, Jennifer Fish, David R. Goodman, Mary Gene De Guzman, Jaira Harrington, Victoria Haskins, Dirk Hoerder, Elizabeth Hordge-Freeman, Majda Hrženjak, Elizabeth Hutchison, Dimitris Kalantzopoulos, Bela Kashyap, Marta Kindler, Anna Kordasiewicz, Ms Lokesh, Sabrina Marchetti, Robyn Pariser, Jessica Richter, Magaly Rodríguez García, Raffaella Sarti, Adéla Souralová, Yukari Takai, and Andrew Urban.
Book Synopsis Gender Politics In Sudan by : Sondra Hale
Download or read book Gender Politics In Sudan written by Sondra Hale and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-08 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the relationship between gender and the state in the construction national identity politics in twentieth-century northern Sudan, the author investigates the mechanisms that the state and political and religious interest groups employ for achieving political and cultural hegemony. Hale argues that such a process involves the transformation of culture through the involvement of women in both left-wing and Islamist revolutionary movements. In drawing parallels between the gender ideology of secular and religious organizations in Sudan, Hale analyzes male positioning of women within the culture to serve the movement. Using data from fieldwork conducted between 1961 and 1988, she investigates the conditions under which women’s culture can be active, generating positive expressions of resistance and transformation. Hale argues that in northern Sudan women may be using Islam to construct their own identities and improve their situation. Nevertheless, she raises questions about the barriers that women may face now that the Islamic state is achieving hegemony, and discusses limits of identity politics.

BOOK PRESENTATION: In order to feel the existence of eternal life in a different way, that has never been possible before… In order to understand, enjoy and read with spiritual pleasure the Tenth Word of Risale-i Nur, which proves the existence of Hereafter with certainty, at such a high level that you have never reached before… What would you do, if you know, of a certainty, that eternal life exists? How would your perspective on life change if you know that you will live forever? Then what would change in your life if you know that your happiness in this eternal life will depend on your behaviors in this temporary life at such a certainty as you are sure of the coming of night after day and of spring after winter or as you know two plus two equals four? Would not you get excited if we told you that you can get such invaluable information just by reading this book that you are holding in your hand? Tenth World that you are about to read is such an excellent book of a lifetime, promising you this and much more. In other words, it is such a lively book that it can be read repeatedly without getting bored and the passion to read it never subsides. Even Avicenna (Ibn-i Sina) who is considered as one of the greatest geniuses admitted his helplessness/incompetence in understanding the resurrection by once stating that “The Intellect cannot find a way to it”. And now, we are curiously stepping into the Treatise of Resurrection, which explains/declares the truths of the issue of resurrection, which even this noted scholar, cannot catch up with his genius, to everybody, even to the kids, and which gives us the key opening the gate of the second one of the two biggest amulets of the cosmos. In this book, which is an explanatory work based on 10th Word of Risale-i Nur Collection, the resurrection after the Doomsday is proved so certainly that the Author of Risale-i Nur tells the following on this subject: “If you want to be as certain about the occurrence of the resurrection of the dead as you are about the arrival of next spring, study the Tenth and Twenty-Ninth Words carefully, which are about this, and you will see! If you do not then believe that it will occur as you believe the coming of spring, come and stick your finger in my eye!” Once you finish reading this book, you will witness that it is proved with logical evidence and in a brilliant way that the coming of the eternal life is as certain as the existence of this world and there is no possibility of not the realization of the resurrection after death. This work is a part of our basic/source book called “A Journey of Discovery for an Extraordinary Treasure: Risale-i Nur (The Treatise of Light) Explanatory Notes” upon which our “Journeys of Discovery, Risale-i Nur Training Program” is constructed and it is the proof of the Existence of Resurrection and the Eternal Life, which is the Fifth Truth of the Six Truths, dealt with in the second main part of that book, which is called “Proving the Existence of the Treasure of Faith with Evidence”. We have to state and admit about this Book, that is, Explanatory Text for Tenth Word, the following sincerely: although we did not have any idea about what to write before explanatory notes came into the being, (every time without any exception), we were astonished by the resultant texts and realized that we had never understood these issues that clear before. While controlling the texts, we had great joy and pleasure and we were reading them as if they were written by someone else. The writings were helping us, in an unexpected way, in overcoming our greatest distresses, giving us a strong state of faith. Because what we were writing was talking about eternal truths of faith and Quran and they were having such qualities which were having much more different than a work presented with the individual proficiency and capability of a person. Therefore, the beauty and the excellence of these truths must have been reflected in our word as well. For sure, we were pursuing an immensely difficult and tedious effort; sometimes it was taking 3-5 hours to complete 1-2 pages of explanatory notes. We were spending an equal amount of time for footnotes and the glossary of concepts. But, the feeling of joy, happiness and spiritual satisfaction were exceedingly worth this effort. At this stage, we realized and felt the reason behind Bediüzzaman’s saying: “I am also a student of Risale-i Nur. I am your classmate in learning the Teachings of Quran; I am also in need of Risale-i Nur.” And we understood that he was not trying to be humble while saying this. As a requirement of being human, we wanted to share what we had found and felt, with those who had the same needs and who were in the same search. This is what we mean when we say that we are not like a teacher who makes you sit before her and starts teaching you. Maybe rather we are like a guest who himself is entreated a dining table as he is as hungry and needy as everybody, and he is sincerely inviting you to this dining table. Or maybe we are like a curious kid, who has found the key to a magnificent and inexhaustible treasure, and who wants to inform others of its existence and share it with them. We have made a great effort in order to prepare this work which we share with great enthusiasm. But we admit that this work has been the result of Allah’s special treatment, which is way beyond our personal capabilities and power. We believe wholeheartedly that every believer and everyone who has set his heart on Risale-i Nur, and in fact everybody will read this book enthusiastically and with a compassion which is stronger than the need for water of a person who has been dehydrated for a while. The epilogue of our book which is entitled “Your Journey Just Begins Now!” is also included in this work as it contains emotional, striking and impressive points coming sincerely from the deepest parts of our hearts about the reading of Risale-i Nur and attendance to the Risale-i Nur Lectures. Book Synopsis Knots, Or the Violence of Desire in Renaissance Florence by : Emanuele Lugli
Download or read book Knots, Or the Violence of Desire in Renaissance Florence written by Emanuele Lugli and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2023-03-20 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ""This book is about hair," writes Emanuele Lugli in the first sentence of this innovative cultural history of hair as seen through the lens of Lorenzo il Magnifico's Florence. Lugli reflects on the ways writers and artists naturalized religious prejudices, circumscribed social practices, and propagated gender and class subjugation through alluring works of art, in medical and political writings, and in poetry. What, he asks, may've compelled Sandro Botticelli, for example, or the young Leonardo da Vinci and dozens of their contemporaries to obsess about hair? Why take such care in depicting the braids, knots, and textures in their portraits of women specifically? Lugli dives deeply into the cultural production of notions about hair in this period of Florentine history, the way artists, poets, natural philosophers, doctors, politicians, and theologians thought about it, and how they depicted it in their art and writings. From this varied archive, Lugli gathers rewarding insights from practices and beliefs across the disciplines and genres at a crucial time when Renaissance humanists were attempting to define what it meant to live-and be-human. Lugli recuperates overlooked perceptions of hair at the very moment when hair came to be identified as a potential vector for liberating culture, and he corrects a centuries-old prejudice that sees hair as a trivial subject, as a mere female occupation kept on the margins of relevance, relegated to passing fashion or the decorative. As Lugli shows, such oversight is anachronistic, a product of modern biases, and he corrects this by elucidating hundreds of fifteenth-century sources that engage with hair as a fundamental element in the definition of genders, morals, and the laws of nature, and the exercise of power. It is a book that will surprise and delight a wide audience of scholars and anyone interested in the hidden, systemic, creative power that relied on something as unsuspected as hair to coerce people into thinking and behaving according to a code of conduct"--
Book Synopsis The Routledge International Handbook to Veils and Veiling by : Anna-Mari Almila
Download or read book The Routledge International Handbook to Veils and Veiling written by Anna-Mari Almila and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-06 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Veils and veiling are controversial topics in social and political life, generating debates across the world. The veil is enmeshed within a complex web of relations encompassing politics, religion and gender, and conflicts over the nature of power, legitimacy, belief, freedom, agency and emancipation. In recent years, the veil has become both a potent and unsettling symbol and a rallying-point for discourse and rhetoric concerning women, Islam and the nature of politics. Early studies in gender, doctrine and politics of veiling appeared in the 1970s following the Islamic revival and ’re-veiling’ trends that were dramatically expressed by 1979’s Iranian Islamic revolution. In the 1990s, research focussed on the development of both an ’Islamic culture industry’ and greater urban middle class consumption of ’Islamic’ garments and dress styles across the Islamic world. In the last decade academics have studied Islamic fashion and marketing, the political role of the headscarf, the veiling of other religious groups such as Jews and Christians, and secular forms of modest dress. Using work from contributors across a range of disciplinary backgrounds and locations, this book brings together these research strands to form the most comprehensive book ever conceived on this topic. As such, this handbook will be of interest to scholars and students of fashion, gender studies, religious studies, politics and sociology.
