Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Different national varieties of Spanish, for instance Argentinian, Colombian and Mexican, use different address systems, with different numbers of pronouns, and also give pronouns a different social significance. For the first time, this study discusses and analyses these paradigms in the context of inter-varietal contact in a third country, with English as an additional contact language. A multiplicity of data collection methods made it possible to uncover many new insights into address behaviour. New definitions for address pronouns are proposed, and issues arising from address are discussed, such as: awareness, proficiency, avoidance, accommodation, and uncertainty. In addition, some unexpected practices emerged, which call into question all previously accepted norms of usage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We stand on the precipice of human history as we know it. The clock is now ticking and it is minutes before midnight; the Bride Groom is near. Believers all over the world are living with expectancy that at any moment an Angel is going to sound a trumpet so loud that the dead in Christ shall rise first to meet the Lord in the Air. While those that remain or that are alive shall be Raptured (snatched) away to joined the others standing on the clouds to meet Jesus. There they will begin that great precessional to the kingdom of heaven singing and praising God. According to the prophetic timeline and the Book of Revelation, he that hath an ear let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the Churchthese are the last of the last days. The Church and the guardian of the church, the Holy Spirit is near that epic moment in which they will leave this world to take their place along side the Father and the Son. Once the redeemed and Gods precious Spirit is out of here, this world is in for an upheaval it has never known. The Anti-Christ will rise to prominence; he will dominate this world along with the False Prophet who will release demon spirits into the world and behead Christians. Jesus will come a second time, this time hes riding on a white horse leading an army of powerful Angels to capture Satan and bound him for a thousand years. Jesus will assume King Davids throne in Jerusalem and thus begin the Millennium reign. Following the thousand year reign of Christ, Satan will be loosed for a short while only to be ultimately defeated at the cataclysmic Battle of Armageddon where he will be cast in the lake of fire to burn forever. Human history, as we know it, closes with the New Earth and New Heaven coming down out of heaven from God as a bride adorned for her husband. It has been prepared before the foundation of the World. It is shining brighter than the sun with the glory of God. Her walls are made of precious pearls, her streets are paved in Gold that is so pure that it is transparent. The City has millions of mansions tailored for Gods Jewels (the Body of Christ). This is the New Jerusalem. It has 12 gates that are guarded by an Angel at each gate; the walls have 12 foundations and in each foundation are the names of the 12 Apostles of the Lamb. And the throne of God and the Lamb shall be in it. Make sure that you are in it.

Book excerpt: "Deniers of climate change have benefited from political strategies developed by conservative think tanks and public relations experts paid handsomely by the energy industry. With this book, environmental activists can benefit from some scholarly attention turned to their efforts. This book exhibits the best that public scholarship has to offer. Its authors utilize sophisticated rhetorical theory and criticism to uncover the inventional constraints and possibilities for participants at various sites of the Step-It-Up day of climate activism. What makes this book especially valuable is that it is not only directed to fellow communication scholars, but is written in a clear and accessible style to bring the insights of an academic field to a broader public of activists committed to building an environmental social movement." - Prof. Leah Ceccarelli, University of Washington "This is an unusually interesting volume grounded in a sustained and coordinated analysis of the Step It Up campaign. Generating a multifaceted and shared archive for analyzing the SIU campaign on global warming, the volume's multiple authors critically examine intersecting dimensions of the SIU campaign-its persuasive strategies, organizational dynamics, and political practices for everyday citizens-with an eye on implications for enhancing the larger environmental movement. Readers with a practical and theoretical interest in social and political movements will find this book engaging and leavened with heuristic value." - Professor Robert L. Ivie, Indiana University, Bloomington

Book excerpt: While the near-term priorities are national defense and macroeconomic stabilization, gradually incorporating climate change considerations into policy design will become increasingly important after the war and into the long term. As regards climate change adaptation, investments will need to be made with a view to maintain long-term debt sustainability. Policy reforms will also be needed to move to a low-emissions economy to deliver international commitments and achieve the broader objective of European Union accession. Potential exists to deliver on climate priorities alongside implementing recovery and reconstruction efforts, while maintaining macroeconomic stability, and ensuring social protection and equity.

Analyzing the costs and benefits of different scenarios, it sets out a modeling framework and shows how adapting policies to tackle emissions and improve air quality can help boost the region’s development, environment, and public well-being. It shows how increasing energy efficiency and reducing fossil fuel consumption can improve air quality and help the PRC meet its commitment to achieve carbon neutrality before 2060.

Book excerpt: A selection of recent work as well as the best from thirteen volumes of poetry published across four decades, Change of Address highlights the magnitude and scope of David Slavitt's poetic achievement. Meditating on both the quotidian and the sublime and ranging from brilliant satire to tender elegy, this retrospective collection brings into sharp relief Slavitt's intelligence, strength of voice, and ease in varied poetic forms. From the beginning of his career, Slavitt has displayed a rare technical virtuosity, and his verse has long confronted -- with urbanity and poise -- questions of love, grief, loss, and death. Though he is an exuberantly playful poet, his gamesmanship is earnest, toying wisely and bravely with the largest experiences of joy and heartbreak. And his gestures, while seemingly effortless, are carefully considered. The result is a body of poetry that haunts us as only the best literature can. A splendid capstone to Slavitt's copious output, Change of Address grants readers access to the extraordinary spectrum of his poetry in a single volume. body betrays, and even a mind can rebel, but against what? What remains? Slowly but surely, we are forced to suppose a soul, which serves us well, while we serve it unfaithfully and impurely. Infinitely regressive? Or merely shy? Call it what watches, suffers, and remains our subject/object, despite whatever pains we may impose upon it, an inner I. Or is it a mere fiction that one may admit as useful or even necessary? Its truth is theoretical, a series, a trend, almost algebraic: and one conjures it from the motes that fly in the thin air of his youth to create the granite block that marks his end. -- "Soul"

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a Navy SEAL's inspiring graduation speech, this #1 New York Times bestseller of powerful life lessons "should be read by every leader in America" (Wall Street Journal). If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed. On May 17, 2014, Admiral William H. McRaven addressed the graduating class of the University of Texas at Austin on their Commencement day. Taking inspiration from the university's slogan, "What starts here changes the world," he shared the ten principles he learned during Navy Seal training that helped him overcome challenges not only in his training and long Naval career, but also throughout his life; and he explained how anyone can use these basic lessons to change themselves-and the world-for the better. Admiral McRaven's original speech went viral with over 10 million views. Building on the core tenets laid out in his speech, McRaven now recounts tales from his own life and from those of people he encountered during his military service who dealt with hardship and made tough decisions with determination, compassion, honor, and courage. Told with great humility and optimism, this timeless book provides simple wisdom, practical advice, and words of encouragement that will inspire readers to achieve more, even in life's darkest moments.
