This book was released on 1995 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Pacific Halibut Commission has sampled the commercial catch since the 1930s. Documentation for the years 1982 to 1993 of port coverage, logbook data collected, sampling methods, otolith sample size, the processing of otoliths in the lab, and otolith-related studies are presented in this report. Sampling ports were added as the pattern of landings shifted. Logbook data forms changed to reflect the use of more than one gear type per vessel and the use of non-halibut gear. Also initiated was the collection of information on gear lost or abandoned during the ever shortening openings. Length/age sampling within a port was changed from representing a port proportionally, to representing a vessel's hailed weight proportionally. This change was made in response to the shorter, higher volume unloading periods and was accomplished by changing from systematic sampling of slings (cargo nets) of fish to unbiased random sampling of fish. The total otolith sample size was reduced and sample sizes were set for each management area. Double blind aging was discontinued. Otolith studies relating to glycerin absorption, age validation using oxytetracycline, automated aging, and the use of otoliths to determine sex were undertaken.

Book Synopsis Improving Fish Stock Assessments by : National Research Council
Download or read book Improving Fish Stock Assessments written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1998-02-27 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ocean harvests have plateaued worldwide and many important commercial stocks have been depleted. This has caused great concern among scientists, fishery managers, the fishing community, and the public. This book evaluates the major models used for estimating the size and structure of marine fish populations (stock assessments) and changes in populations over time. It demonstrates how problems that may occur in fisheries dataâ€"for example underreporting or changes in the likelihood that fish can be caught with a given type of gearâ€"can seriously degrade the quality of stock assessments. The volume makes recommendations for means to improve stock assessments and their use in fishery management.

Download or read book Climate Change and Northern Fish Populations written by National Research Council Canada and published by NRC Research Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 756 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These documents summarize some of the recent studies of the relationships among climate, the aquatic environment, and the dynamics of fish populations. The studies are mostly from the North Pacific ocean, but there are reports of investigations from the North Atlatic Ocean and from fresh water. Various papers include numerous examples of the relationships between fish abundance trends and the environment.
Book Synopsis Sustaining Marine Fisheries by : National Research Council
Download or read book Sustaining Marine Fisheries written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-03-19 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluctuations and declines in marine fish populations have caused growing concern among marine scientists, fisheries managers, commercial and recreational fishers, and the public. Sustaining Marine Fisheries explores the nature of marine ecosystems and the complex interacting factors that shape their productivity. The book documents the condition of marine fisheries today, highlighting species and geographic areas that are under particular stress. Challenges to achieving sustainability are discussed, and shortcomings of existing fisheries management and regulation are examined. The volume calls for fisheries management to adopt a broader ecosystem perspective that encompasses all relevant environmental and human influences. Sustaining Marine Fisheries offers new approaches to building workable fisheries management institutions, improving scientific data, and developing management tools. The book recommends ways to change current practices that encourage overexploitation of fish resources. It will be of special interest to marine policymakers and ecologists, fisheries regulators and managers, fisheries scientists and marine ecologists, fishers, and concerned individuals.
Book Synopsis Computation and Interpretation of Biological Statistics of Fish Populations by : William Edwin Ricker
Download or read book Computation and Interpretation of Biological Statistics of Fish Populations written by William Edwin Ricker and published by . This book was released on 2010-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computation and Interpretation of Biological Statistics of Fish Populations, first published in 1975, deals with the general field of biological statistics of fish populations. It is a compilation of the more important procedures used to estimate abundance, age composition, rate of growth, and mortality rates in fish populations, with working examples of all the computations. Computation and Interpretation of Biological Statistics of Fish Populations is one of the most highly cited scientific references in the field of fisheries.

Book Synopsis Discards in the World's Marine Fisheries by : Kieran Kelleher
Download or read book Discards in the World's Marine Fisheries written by Kieran Kelleher and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2005 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication gives an updated review of the quantity of discards in the world's marine fisheries, using information from a broad range of fisheries in all continents. A number of policy issues are discussed including a 'no discards' approach to fisheries management, the need for balance between bycatch reduction and bycatch utilisation initiatives, and concerns arising from incidental catches of marine mammals, birds and reptiles. The report also highlights the need for more robust methods of estimating discards, and the development of bycatch management plans.
Book Synopsis Quantitative Fish Dynamics by : Terrance J. Quinn
Download or read book Quantitative Fish Dynamics written by Terrance J. Quinn and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1999 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fields of fish population dynamics and stock assessment have seen major advances in the 1980s and 1990s, creating the need for a new synthesis. This text attempts that synthesis by presenting a contemporary approach for quantitative fisheries science that incorporates modern statistical and mathematical techniques. It emphasizes the link between biology and theory by explaining the assumptions inherent in the quantitative methods and models. The book covers key topics that are often overlooked in other texts, such as optimal harvesting, migratory stocks, and complex age and size-structured models. Quantitative Fish Dynamics is an ideal textbook for graduate and undergraduate courses in fish population dynamics and stock assessment. It is an indispensable reference work for fisheries scientists and others interested in conservation biology, fish and wildlife management, population ecology, and statistical applications.
