Book Synopsis Continuity Despite Change by : Matthew E. Carnes
Download or read book Continuity Despite Change written by Matthew E. Carnes and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2014-08-13 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the dust settles on nearly three decades of economic reform in Latin America, one of the most fundamental economic policy areas has changed far less than expected: labor regulation. To date, Latin America's labor laws remain both rigidly protective and remarkably diverse. Continuity Despite Change develops a new theoretical framework for understanding labor laws and their change through time, beginning by conceptualizing labor laws as comprehensive systems or "regimes." In this context, Matthew Carnes demonstrates that the reform measures introduced in the 1980s and 1990s have only marginally modified the labor laws from decades earlier. To explain this continuity, he argues that labor law development is constrained by long-term economic conditions and labor market institutions. He points specifically to two key factors—the distribution of worker skill levels and the organizational capacity of workers. Carnes presents cross-national statistical evidence from the eighteen major Latin American economies to show that the theory holds for the decades from the 1980s to the 2000s, a period in which many countries grappled with proposed changes to their labor laws. He then offers theoretically grounded narratives to explain the different labor law configurations and reform paths of Chile, Peru, and Argentina. His findings push for a rethinking of the impact of globalization on labor regulation, as economic and political institutions governing labor have proven to be more resilient than earlier studies have suggested.

Book Synopsis Change and Continuity in American Colleges and Universities by : Nathan, M. Sorber
Download or read book Change and Continuity in American Colleges and Universities written by Nathan, M. Sorber and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-14 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Change and Continuity in American Colleges and Universities explores major ideas which have shaped the history and development of higher education in North America and considers how these inform contemporary innovations in the sector. Chapters address intellectual, organizational, social, and political movements which occurred across the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and have impacted the policies, scholarship, and practices enacted at a variety of public and private institutions throughout the United States. Topics addressed include the politics of racial segregation, the place of religion in Higher Education, and models of leadership. Through rigorous historical analyses of education reform cases, this text puts forward useful lessons on how colleges and universities have navigated change in the past, and may do so in the future. This text will be of interest to scholars, researchers, and students in the fields of Higher Education, administration and leadership, as well as the history of education and educational reform.
Book Synopsis Shaped by the State by : Brent Cebul
Download or read book Shaped by the State written by Brent Cebul and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2019-02-21 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American political history has been built around narratives of crisis, in which what “counts” are the moments when seemingly stable political orders collapse and new ones rise from the ashes. But while crisis-centered frameworks can make sense of certain dimensions of political culture, partisan change, and governance, they also often steal attention from the production of categories like race, gender, and citizenship status that transcend the usual break points in American history. Brent Cebul, Lily Geismer, and Mason B. Williams have brought together first-rate scholars from a wide range of subfields who are making structures of state power—not moments of crisis or partisan realignment—integral to their analyses. All of the contributors see political history as defined less by elite subjects than by tensions between state and economy, state and society, and state and subject—tensions that reveal continuities as much as disjunctures. This broader definition incorporates investigations of the crosscurrents of power, race, and identity; the recent turns toward the history of capitalism and transnational history; and an evolving understanding of American political development that cuts across eras of seeming liberal, conservative, or neoliberal ascendance. The result is a rich revelation of what political history is today.
Book Synopsis Continuity and Change in the American Family by : Lynne M. Casper
Download or read book Continuity and Change in the American Family written by Lynne M. Casper and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2001-12-20 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continuity and Change in the American Family engages students with issues they see every day in the news, providing them with a comprehensive description of the social demography of the American family. Understanding ever-changing family systems and patterns requires taking the pulse of contemporary family life from time to time. This book paints a portrait of family continuity and change in the later half of the 20th century, with a focus on data from the 1970′s to present. The authors explore such topics as the growth in cohabitation, changes in childbearing, and how these trends affect family life. Other topics include the changing lives of single mothers, fathers, and grandparents and increasing economic disparities among families; child care and child well-being; and combining paid work and family. The authors are talented writers who bring considerable professional and scholarly background to bear in illuminating this topic in a thoughtful yet lively presentation.
Book Synopsis Twentieth-Century America by : Michael Heale
Download or read book Twentieth-Century America written by Michael Heale and published by Bloomsbury Academic. This book was released on 2004-01-30 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1941 Time magazine publisher Henry Luce spoke of the 'American Century', anticipating that the values of the United States would spread around the world. Twentieth-Century America provides a comprehensive analysis of the changes and continuities in the US political system from 1900 to 2000, a period of unprecedented growth and power in US history, though one that was also punctuated by crises and division. Part One focuses on the Progressive Order, which emerged with the progressive movement at the beginning of the century, and lasted until the Wall Street Crash and the subsequent depression destroyed its political foundations. Part Two begins in 1933 when President Franklin Roosevelt inaugurated the New Deal. The 'big government' liberalism of the New Deal Order survived until the late 1960s, when it was undermined by dissension over Vietnam and racial turmoil. In Part Three the Divided Order the focus is on the last third of the century when the US political system was characterized by confusion and fragmentation, partly because the White House and Congress were usually occupied by rival parties. Class, gender and race were important formative influences on the course of US history, and proper attention is paid to the role of American workers, immigrants, women, African Americans and other minorities in this penetrating study of recent US history.

Book Synopsis Latin America since Independence by : Thomas C. Wright
Download or read book Latin America since Independence written by Thomas C. Wright and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-08-03 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an innovative, thematic approach to the history of Latin America since independence. It traces continuity and change in colonial legacies that became central political issues following independence: authoritarian governance; a rigid social hierarchy based on race, color, and gender; the powerful Roman Catholic Church; economic dependency; and the large landed estate. Generally, liberals have sought to modify or abolish these legacies in the interest of what they consider progress, while conservatives have attempted to preserve them as much as possible as bastions of their power and privilege. Examining the evolution of these colonial legacies across two centuries reveals the processes that formed the political systems, economies, societies, and religious institutions that characterize Latin America today.
