Book excerpt: This volume contains 55 publications in the field of Acoustics and includes the famous landmark paper On the Mechanical Theory of Vibration of Bowed Strings--perhaps the most important contribution to the theory of violins since Helmholtz, and also the English translation of Raman's celebrated monograph, Musik instrumente und ihre Klange (Musical Instruments and Their Tones) in the Springer Encyclopaedia of Physics. The volume includes six remarkable papers on the acoustics of Indian musical instruments--the mridangam and tabla, the only percussion instruments in the world that produce harmonic vibrations, and the tanpura and veena.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph offers a cultural history of the development of physics in India during the first half of the twentieth century, focusing on Indian physicists Satyendranath Bose (1894-1974), Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman (1888-1970) and Meghnad Saha (1893-1956). The analytical category "bhadralok physics" is introduced to explore how it became possible for a highly successful brand of modern science to develop in a country that was still under colonial domination. The term Bhadralok refers to the then emerging group of native intelligentsia, who were identified by academic pursuits and manners. Exploring the forms of life of this social group allows a better understanding of the specific character of Indian modernity that, as exemplified by the work of bhadralok physicists, combined modern science with indigenous knowledge in an original program of scientific research. The three scientists achieved the most significant scientific successes in the new revolutionary field of quantum physics, with such internationally recognized accomplishments as the Saha ionization equation (1921), the famous Bose-Einstein statistics (1924), and the Raman Effect (1928), the latter discovery having led to the first ever Nobel Prize awarded to a scientist from Asia. This book analyzes the responses by Indian scientists to the radical concept of the light quantum, and their further development of this approach outside the purview of European authorities. The outlook of bhadralok physicists is characterized here as "cosmopolitan nationalism," which allows us to analyze how the group pursued modern science in conjunction with, and as an instrument of Indian national liberation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights the role of Sir Asutosh Mookerjee, founder of the Calcutta school of physics and the Calcutta Mathematical Society, and his talented scholars – Sir C.V. Raman, D.M. Bose, S.N. Bose, M.N. Saha, Sir K.S. Krishnan and S.K. Mitra – all of whom played a significant role in fulfilling their goal of creating an outstanding school of physical sciences in the city of Calcutta. The main objective of the book is to bring to the fore the combined contributions of the greatest physicists of India, who in the colonial period worked with practically no modern amenities and limited financial resources, but nonetheless with total dedication and self-confidence, which is unmatched in today’s world. The book presents the golden age of the physical sciences in India in compact form; in addition, small anecdotes, mostly unknown to many, have been brought the forefront. The book consists of 10 chapters, which include papers by these distinguished scientists along with detailed accounts of their academic lives and main research contributions, particularly during their time in Calcutta. A synopsis of the contents is provided in the introductory chapter. In the following chapters, detailed discussions are presented in straightforward language. The complete bibliographies of the great scientists have been added at the end. This book will be of interest to historians, philosophers of science, linguists, anthropologists, students, research scholars and general readers with a love for the history of science.

Book excerpt: The name of Raman is familiar to science not only through the effect that bears his name, but also due to derivative names such as stimulated Raman scattering and Raman laser. However, other than that he won the Nobel Prize, little is generally know about the man himself. But the story is fascinating. Raman fiercely cherished his independence and rejected government support for his research. A sharp critic of many government policies, he was often misunderstood and maligned, though his commitment to science and to its growth in India never wavered. Venkataraman's account deals with all these aspects of Raman's life and work, besides placing them in a proper perspective vis-a-vis the overall Indian scene. Numerous quotations help capture the mood and excitement of those times. The book is not only a lively biography of a colorful personality, but also required reading for anyone with a serious interest in and concern for Indian science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir C.V. Raman was one of the rare Indians who excelled in a field which was in his time unexplored – Physics. He was recognized the world-over and bestowed the Nobel Prize for Physics. He deserved the honour that India gave him by proclaiming him as the Bharat Ratna.A true Indian at heart; he made his country proud by relentlessly pursuing a belief that he had – that light scatters and changes in wavelength when it traverses a transparent material. This phenomena earned the name of Raman scattering and the result of the Raman effect. The Raman effect led to further research in science. Raman spectroscopy was based on this phenomena and then the quantum photon spin. He carried out experiments on the diffraction of light by acoustic waves – named as the acousto-optic effect; spectroscopic behaviour of crystals; etc.His world revolved round science and he viewed the world from that perspective. Therefore; his life is an interesting one focused on Physics. The author has thrown light on this great physicist’s life successfully.

Book excerpt: Vibrational Spectroscopy Applications in Biomedical, Pharmaceutical and Food Sciences synthesizes the latest research on the applications of vibrational spectroscopy in biomedical, pharmaceutical and food analysis. Suitable for graduate-level students as well as experienced researchers in academia and industry, this book is organized into five distinct sections. The first deals with the fundamentals of vibrational spectroscopy, with the second presenting the most important sampling methodology used for infrared and Raman spectroscopy in various fields of interest. Since spectroscopy is the study of the interaction of electromagnetic radiation with matter, this section deals with the characteristics, properties and absorption of electromagnetic radiation. Final sections describe the analytical studies performed all over the world in biomedical, pharmaceutical and in the food sciences. - Presents a critical discussion of many of the applications of vibrational spectroscopy - Covers details of the analytical methodologies used in pharmaceutical and biomedical applications - Discusses the latest developments in pharmaceutical and biomedical analysis of both small and large molecules

Book excerpt: Raman microscopy is now well-established as one of the most powerful and versatile techniques for a diverse range of applications in both research and analytical laboratories. Its unique advantage is its ability to noninvasively characterize chemically complex and spatially inhomogeneous samples with a sub-micron spatial resolution. Modern confocal Raman scanning microscopy, which allows one to obtain two- and three-dimensional spectrochemical images of samples in various states and forms, has become a method of choice for a wide range of applications including the study of biological cells, tissues, and microorganisms, characterization of pharmaceutical drugs and formulations, forensic evidence, minerals and gems, carbon nanomaterials, semiconductors, composite polymers, and more. This book presents the techniques of confocal Raman microscopy and imaging for researchers and engineers from a variety of disciplines. It highlights the key aspects of this technique in order to effectively apply it in practice. It will appeal to a wide circle of readers who are interested in, or are already, using the methods of confocal Raman microscopy and imaging in their work, and will also be beneficial for novice Raman microscopy users.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To C.V. Raman color was an obsession. The visual impact that the blue of the Mediterranean had on him culminated in his discovery of the Raman effect. This volume contains 79 papers he published on a variety of topics, 39 of which deal with color in Nature. All the optical phenomena in his repertoire were necessary to explain the flashing rainbow colors of the plumage of birds. 16 papers deal with diamonds: The beauty of their geometric form, and their lustrous curved faces bring out clearly that many specimens exhibit a symmetry lower than the highest in the cubic class. Twenty papers deal with miscellaneous topics in which Raman was interested from time to time. His phenomenological theory of viscosity which was so useful to the polymer chemist, his classic studies of impact between two bodies, and his pioneering work of the mechanism on fracture of solids are all dealt with in this volume.
