Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not many women can claim to have changed history, but Nafis Sadik set that goal in her youth, and change the world she did. Champion of Choice tells the remarkable story of how Sadik, born into a prominent Indian family in 1929, came to be the world’s foremost advocate for women’s health and reproductive rights, the first female director of a United Nations agency, and “one of the most powerful women in the world” (London Times). An obstetrician, wife, mother, and devout Muslim, Sadik has been a courageous and tireless advocate for women, insisting on discussing the difficult issues that impact their lives: education, contraception, abortion, as well as rape and other forms of violence. After Sadik joined the fledgling UN Population Fund in 1971, her groundbreaking strategy for providing females with education and the tools to control their own fertility has dramatically influenced the global birthrate. This book is the first to examine Sadik’s contribution to history and the unconventional methods she has employed to go head-to-head with world leaders to improve millions of women’s lives. Interspersed between the chapters recounting Sadik’s life are vignettes of females around the globe who represent her campaign against domestic abuse, child marriage, genital mutilation, and other human rights violations. With its insights into the political, religious, and domestic battles that have dominated women’s destinies, Sadik’s life story is as inspirational as it is dramatic.

Book Synopsis Reaching the Mountaintop of the Academy by : Gail L. Thompson
Download or read book Reaching the Mountaintop of the Academy written by Gail L. Thompson and published by IAP. This book was released on 2015-11-01 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the U.S. Civil Rights era, the racial composition of higher education has changed dramatically, resulting in an increase in the number of African American students and African American faculty in predominantly white institutions (PWI). Nevertheless, the number of African American endowed or distinguished professors remains small. Because it is difficult for African American faculty to attain these prized positions, those who have done so possess invaluable knowledge that may be beneficial to others. Reaching the Mountaintop of the Academy: Personal Narratives, Advice and Strategies from Black Distinguished and Endowed Professors, fills an important niche in the canon of higher education literature. In the autobiographical chapters that follow, numerous distinguished and endowed professors (1) describe their personal journey to the distinguished or endowed professorship; (2) explain important life lessons that they learned during their journey; (3) describe their current professional goals; and (4) offer suggestions and recommendations for graduate students, untenured faculty, tenured faculty, and college/university administrators. At a time when many predominantly white higher education institutions continue to have difficulty attracting and retaining African American faculty, and African American faculty continue to struggle for full inclusion in the academy, this book is timely and needed.

Book excerpt: The Mindset of a Champion follows the career of legendary blogger Byron Crawford a/k/a Bol, founder and editor of the eponymous hip-hop blog, from a dark, foul-smelling dorm room in the middle of nowhere, to his pioneering work in the field of online hip-hop journalism, in which he either coined or popularized several slang terms that are generally frowned upon, attempted to have Kanye West banned from the Grammys (years before the incident with Taylor Swift), and witnessed a vicious, passionate sexual attack perpetrated by an animal, which is described here in detail. From there, it's on to his career as one of the first - and best, he would say - professional hip-hop bloggers, at XXL magazine, where he was involved in a number of controversies, including beefs with rappers like Bun B and Lupe Fiasco, posts that mysteriously disappeared from the Internets almost as soon as they appeared, and threats of boycotts by Muslims and black feminists. Nary a feeling is spared as he reveals the hilarious true stories behind the rise and fall of his career as a semi-professional hip-hop journalist.
