Book Synopsis The Potentiality of 'developmental States' in Africa by : Pamela Mbabazi
Download or read book The Potentiality of 'developmental States' in Africa written by Pamela Mbabazi and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2005 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Potentiality of 'Developmental States' in Africa investigates the potential role of the state in Africa in promoting development in this era of globalisation. Using Botswana and Uganda as case studies, the volume argues that it is not the amount of state involvement in the economy that matters, but the quality. This set of original studies compares and contrasts issues that distinguish the two countries' development record and style of activity of the state in promoting development. Written by a collection of researchers drawn mainly from Botswana and Uganda, this book argues that there are some elements of the developmental state model in both countries. These elements have arguably contributed to some of the relative successes in the two states. Contextualising the case studies within the history and political economy of the respective countries, the book is a valuable addition to the on-going debate on the role, nature and character of states in Africa. A must read for students, researchers, politicians and development practitioners. Book jacket.

This book was released on 2018-12-20 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2003. Based on a blend of knowledge and perspectives from a variety of disciplines this volume examines the human-environment interaction in Africa, with a focus on the economic, social and political processes that generate environmental change and problems in this region. Currently there are controversies over and challenges to such concepts and issues as environment-human relationships, ecological resilience, decertification, sustainable development, globalization and North-South dialogue. This book draws upon past and present research findings to discuss these issues. It features: an examination of the characteristics, processes and patterns of environmental crises; an analysis of the principal issues and challenges facing policy makers and implementers; and the promotion of awareness of theoretical, empirical and comparative research. The volume not only seeks to answer some of the old questions, but also open up new ones for further discussion.

Book Synopsis The Challenges of Urbanisation in Botswan by : Esther Kip
Download or read book The Challenges of Urbanisation in Botswan written by Esther Kip and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-02 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By 2030, more people in the developing world will live in urban than rural areas; by 2050, two-thirds of its population is likely to be urban. The world s population as a whole is expected to grow by 2.5 billion from 2007 to 2050. This demographic transformation has profound implications for health. Botswana is no exception to the challenges of urbanization. It has experienced rapid urbanization since the 1980 s. Gaborone, the capital city of Botswana is often described as Africa s fastest growing city because it is experiencing an increased influx of migrants from rural and neighbouring countries. Over half (54%) of Botswana s population currently lives in the urban settlements. Despite the fact that urbanization has benefited Botswana s economic and social development, it has also generated wide range of socio-economic challenges. This book presents the findings of the study on the social determinants of health conducted among the poor urban residents in Gaborone, Botswana. The book should be useful to policy makers in governments, International development partners, Non Governmental Organizations and scholars in the field of public and urban health.

Chapter 9 explores the awareness and responses of the Southern African tourism sector to control HIV/AIDS, and the perceptions on the effects of the disease on its operational environment. The process of mutual learning is, however, a complicated one and has a number of critical points, as described in Chapter 10. Chapter 11 elaborates on the applicability of information and communication technology (ICT) for school-based tourism marketing in Namibia, based on experiences and studies in his former home region, the eastern Caprivi Strip.
