Book excerpt: Fibre optic technology offers the possibility for developing of a variety of physical sensors for a wide range of physical parameters. The main advantage of fiber optic sensors lies in their dielectric construction, providing electrical isolation, immunity from electromagnetic fields, small dimensions, and compatibility with optical fibre technology. A large number of fiber sensors in production are based on intensity modulation of the light either outside the fiber or within it. In the case of intensity sensors the physical perturbation to be measured interacts with the fibre or some device attached to the fibre to modulate the intensity of the light as it travels through the fiber. Intensity modulated fiber sensors have been demonstrated to be efficient for different applications. A variation of internal-modulation sensors are the microbending-loss sensors, which are characterized by a relatively simple construction, good performances and compatibility with multimode fibre technology. A very effective con- figuration for the microbending-loss sensors is that one based on clad mode detection. For clad modes detection the end segment of the fiber is bent and placed in an integrating sphere. The use of chalcogenide rather quartz fibre optic highly increases the Sensitivity of the sensor. Experimental set-up, transmission characteristics and technical parameters are presented.

Book excerpt: An extrinsic Fizeau fiber optic sensor comprises a single-mode fiber, used as an input/output fiber, and a multimode fiber, used purely as a reflector, to form an air gap within a silica tube that acts as a Fizeau cavity. The Fresnel reflection from the glass/air interface at the front of the air gap (reference reflection) and the reflection from the air/glass interface at the far end of the air gap (sensing reflection) interfere in the input/output fiber. The two fibers are allowed to move in the silica tube, and changes in the air gap length cause changes in the phase difference between the reference reflection and the sensing reflection. This phase difference is observed as changes in intensity of the light monitored at the output arm of a fused biconical tapered coupler. The extrinsic Fizeau fiber optic sensor behaves identically whether it is surface mounted or embedded, which is unique to the extrinsic sensor in contrast to intrinsic Fabry-Perot sensors. The sensor may be modified to provide a quadrature phase shift extrinsic Fizeau fiber optic sensor for the detection of both the amplitude and the relative polarity of dynamically varying strain. The quadrature light signals may be generated by either mechanical or optical means. A plurality of the extrinsic sensors may connected in cascade and multiplexed to allow monitoring by a single analyzer.

Later on, in 1902, Wood [2], as well as Meier in 1910 [3], carried out the first researches on the optical properties of vitreous selenium. The interest in the glasses that exhibit transparency in the infrared region of the optical spectrum rose at the beginning of the twentieth century. Firstly were investigated the heavy metal oxides and the transparency limit was extended from (the case of the classical oxide glasses) up to wavelength. In order to extend this limit above the scientists tried the chemical compositions based on the elements of the sixth group of the Periodic Table, the chalcogens: sulphur, selenium and tellurium. The systematic research in the field of glasses based on chalcogens, called chalcogenide glasses, started at the middle of our century. In 1950 Frerichs [4] investigated the glass and published the paper: “New optical glasses transparent in infrared up to 12 . Several years later he started the study of the selenium glass and prepared several binary glasses with sulphur [5]. Glaze and co-workers [6] developed in 1957 the first method for the preparation of the glass at the industrial scale, while Winter-Klein [7] published reports on numerous chalcogenides prepared in the vitreous state.

In composites, bending-twisting couplings can occur which result in the beam undergoing two dimensional vibration motion when subjected to a bending moment. A new monitoring technique was conceptualized and validated which utilizes embedded optical fibers as the sensors. This paper discusses the experimental validation of the concept, the physics involved in the optimization of the technique, and the areas in need of further development. The experiments have shown that two dimensional vibration can be detected using this technique. Actual displacement time information was not available for the specific test apparatus used and therefore damping loss factor information was not obtained. Further development of the data acquisition system and methodology for determination of the image center is required along with an appropriate grid xy sensor in order for the technique to be acceptable as a new technique for measuring the vibration damping loss factors for materials.
