Book excerpt: “Wealth without work Pleasure without conscience Science without humanity Knowledge without character Politics without principle Commerce without morality Worship without sacrifice. https://vidjambov.blogspot.com/2023/01/book-inventory-vladimir-djambov-talmach.html "Why are dust and ashes proud?" ( Sirach 10: 9 ). And in many places you will find that pride is disgusting and very hateful. This is what [the prophet David] says here: with one who looks proudly and with an insatiable heart - with this [one] I did not eat ( Ps. 101:4 ), since pride is extremely harmful and pernicious not only for the one who has assimilated it for himself, but also for the one who does not share it for a long time. The prophet placed the greedy, hungry heart next to the proud, since the spiritual disposition of both is the same - both ascending above his neighbor, and greedy in relation to his neighbor. So, it is good, brethren, for us to put aside pride and acquire humility, so that we may not hear: “every one that exalteth himself shall be abased;” but: “he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.” ( Luke 18:14 ). At the same time, it is good to be strengthened in temperance and moderation, so that the greed of the heart does not drive away the truth from itself and then hear: "For the greatness of thine iniquity are thy skirts discovered, and thy heels made bare." ( Jer. 13:22 ). Let us avoid the behavior characteristic of people who are proud and greedy, so that, due to the habit of communicating with them, we do not learn their vices (3). /// The great Holy Apostle Paul, recounting the many trials and tribulations to which he had been subjected, cries out [loud]: I die daily! (1 Cor. 15:31). In interpreting these apostolic words, St. John Chrysostom asks, "How did he die on a daily basis?" – and replies: "By zeal and preparedness thereof! And why does the Apostle say this? – “In order to confirm the truth of the resurrection. Who would have opted for so many kinds of death were there no resurrection and no future life ?!” /// “No one can serve two masters ,” says the Lord ( Matt. 6:24 ). About this, St. John Chrysostom teaches: “Do not tell me that you are not worshiping the golden idol, but show me that you are not doing what the gold commands you to do. For the images of idolatry are different: one honors the mammon for gentlemen, another - the womb for God, another - the most universal lust. You do not devour oxen like the Greeks, but much worse, you slaughter your soul; you don’t kneel, you don’t worship, but with great obedience you do everything that commands you womb, gold and lust torment. Therefore, the Greeks are vile, because our passions have been enriched.” (Conversation 6 on the Epistle to the Romans). /// The apostle Paul himself says about himself: I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified. 6. But for Christ to dwell in us, this is not a matter of one day or two, said St. John Chrysostom, but of many years and years. Moreover, he who wants to acquire Christ must renounce everything: it is impossible to work for the world and God together.

Book excerpt: A Pollan-esque look at the truth about wheat, with surprising insights on the advantages of eating the world’s most contested grain You owe it to your mind and body to step away from the gluten-free frenzy long enough to do what’s best for your own personal health. Once you separate fad from fact you’ll quickly discover the answer: whole grains, including wheat. Most recently, a Harvard School of Public Health long-term study that followed 117, 500 men and women over a 25-year span revealed that people who eat a whole grain-rich diet lower their risk of cardiovascular disease by 20 percent, and increase their lifespan at least 6 percent. No other food produces similar results. As for the gluten found in wheat, rye and barley—at most six out of a hundred of us have any real problem with it, and less than one percent of us, with celiac disease, cannot tolerate it in any form. So why has wheat become the new asbestos? Why are the shelves of every grocery store and supermarket in America heaped high with gluten-free products? That’s what Stephen Yafa sets out to discover in Grain of Truth—a book drawn in part from personal experience that is as entertaining as it is informative. After hundreds of interviews with food scientists, gluten-sensitive individuals, bakers, nutritionists, gastroenterologists and others, he finds that indeed there is indeed a culprit. But it’s not wheat. It’s not gluten. It’s the way that grain is milled and processed by large industrial manufacturers and bakeries. That discovery spurs him to search out growers, millers and bakers who deliver whole wheat to us the way it was meant to be: naturally fermented, with all parts, bran, germ, and white endosperm intact. Yafa finds a thriving local grain movement gaining strength across the country, much as the organic movement did a few decades back. And as he apprentices with local artisan bakers and make his own sourdough breads at home he learns something that few of us know: naturally fermented over two days, as opposed to four hours in commercial bakeries, whole wheat is easily digested by the vast majority of us, including many who consider themselves gluten-sensitive. The long fermentation processing method breaks down these bulky gluten proteins into tiny fragments while slowing the conversion rate of starch to sugar in our bloodstream. Along the way Grain of Truth challenges many common myths. Yafa shows us the science that proves a gluten-free diet doesn’t lead to weight loss and that it isn't healthier in any way. He counters common assumptions that modern wheat has been genetically manipulated to contain more gluten, and he point out that despite much web chatter to the contrary, there is no GMO wheat. Those are only some of the reasons that Grain of Truth offers a badly needed fact-based response to anti-wheat hysteria. It also offers an ingredient in short supply these days—common sense, measured out with just enough savvy and substance to make you reconsider what's best for you—and to help you find a healthy answer in real, delicious food. For readers of Salt Sugar Fat and The Omnivore’s Dilemma, Grain of Truth smoothly blends science, history, biology, economics, and nutrition to give us back our daily bread.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1977, this book—from one of America’s most famous and prolific agricultural writers—became an almost instant classic among homestead gardeners and small farmers. Now fully updated and available once more, Small-Scale Grain Raising offers a entirely new generation of readers the best introduction to a wide range of both common and lesser-known specialty grains and related field crops, from corn, wheat, and rye to buckwheat, millet, rice, spelt, flax, and even beans and sunflowers. More and more Americans are seeking out locally grown foods, yet one of the real stumbling blocks to their efforts has been finding local sources for grains, which are grown mainly on large, distant corporate farms. At the same time, commodity prices for grains—and the products made from them—have skyrocketed due to rising energy costs and increased demand. In this book, Gene Logsdon proves that anyone who has access to a large garden or small farm can (and should) think outside the agribusiness box and learn to grow healthy whole grains or beans—the base of our culinary food pyramid—alongside their fruits and vegetables. Starting from the simple but revolutionary concept of the garden “pancake patch,” Logsdon opens up our eyes to a whole world of plants that we wrongly assume only the agricultural “big boys” can grow. He succinctly covers all the basics, from planting and dealing with pests, weeds, and diseases to harvesting, processing, storing, and using whole grains. There are even a few recipes sprinkled throughout, along with more than a little wit and wisdom. Never has there been a better time, or a more receptive audience, for this book. Localvores, serious home gardeners, CSA farmers, and whole-foods advocates—in fact, all people who value fresh, high-quality foods—will find a field full of information and ideas in this once and future classic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What would you be willing to give up to discover the world beyond your front door? Three Grains of Wheat chronicles Greek island native Emmanuel Papasavas' journey of self-exploration. It is a journey of more than a few steps as he strips away the chaff of his former life as a wheat farmer's son in pursuit of a dream that leads him away from his family and everything he once knew. Picturesque Agios Isidoros - the small Greek village where plumbing was unheard of and money was a rare commodity - is where author Mike Papasavas began his life (and his memoir) more than sixty-five years ago. As a boy, Papasavas knew little except the ways of a wheat farmer's son. Even so, ingrained in him was a desire to discover something beyond his village, beyond his life as young, naive Emmanuel. This yearning led him into the expansive world beyond where he would discover art, poetry, romance, friendships, and much more - though the quest would cost him his name. When he was twenty years old, Emmanuel - now known as Mike - barely saved enough money to buy a one-way ticket to Germany for the purpose of getting a visa...and a new life. But his journey to freedom is a rocky one, finding him up against several nearly insurmountable complications, homelessness and poverty, Mike learns to tackle each obstacle with humor and hope. For him, often times not knowing where he will sleep tonight, faith is his ultimate compass. Mike's determination paves the road toward adventures and misadventures that will forever change him in this culturally diverse travelogue peppered with entertaining stories, personal reflections, and heart-wrenching memories."
