Download or read book Curating empire written by Sarah Longair and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2017-02-01 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Curating empire explores the diverse roles played by museums and their curators in moulding and representing the British imperial experience. This collection demonstrates how individuals, their curatorial practices, and intellectual and political agendas influenced the development of a variety of museums across the globe. Taken together, these contributions suggest that museums are not just sites for accessing history but need to be considered as historical sites of significance in themselves. Individual essays examine the work of curators in museums in Britain and the colonies, the historical display and interpretation of empire in Britain, and the establishment of ‘museum networks’ in the British imperial context. Curating empire sheds new light on the relationship between museums, as repositories for objects and cultural institutions for conveying knowledge, and the politics of culture and the formation of identities throughout the British Empire.

Book Synopsis Banishment and Belonging by : Ronit Ricci
Download or read book Banishment and Belonging written by Ronit Ricci and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2019-11-21 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lanka, Ceylon, Sarandib: merely three disparate names for a single island? Perhaps. Yet the three diverge in the historical echoes, literary cultures, maps and memories they evoke. Names that have intersected and overlapped - in a treatise, a poem, a document - only to go their own ways. But despite different trajectories, all three are tied to narratives of banishment and exile. Ronit Ricci suggests that the island served as a concrete exilic site as well as a metaphor for imagining exile across religions, languages, space and time: Sarandib, where Adam was banished from Paradise; Lanka, where Sita languished in captivity; and Ceylon, faraway island of exile for Indonesian royalty under colonialism. Utilising Malay manuscripts and documents from Sri Lanka, Javanese chronicles, and Dutch and British sources, Ricci explores histories and imaginings of displacement related to the island through a study of the Sri Lankan Malays and their connections to an exilic past.

Book Synopsis The Colonial Administrations of Sir Thomas Maitland by : C. Willis Dixon
Download or read book The Colonial Administrations of Sir Thomas Maitland written by C. Willis Dixon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-23 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1939, this volume describes many of the more colourful episodes in the career of Sir Thomas Maitland, while, in its account of his role as governor, it makes a valuable contribution to the study of early colonial history. Maitland was one of the most important figures in the formative period of the colonial administrative service during and immediately after the Napoleonic Wars. After a distinguished military career, he had two long periods of office in Ceylon, from 1805 to 1811, and from 1813 until his death in 1824 he acted as Governor of Malta and then of the Ionian Islands, where he made a lasting reputation for his vigour and honesty, as well as for his autocratic methods of administration which brought him to be popularly regarded as a tyrant.
Book Synopsis Caste in Early Modern Japan by : Timothy Amos
Download or read book Caste in Early Modern Japan written by Timothy Amos and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-12-06 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Caste", a word normally used in relation to the Indian subcontinent, is rarely associated with Japan in contemporary scholarship. This has not always been the case, and the term was often used among earlier generations of scholars, who introduced the Buraku problem to Western audiences. Amos argues that time for reappraisal is well overdue and that a combination of ideas, beliefs, and practices rooted in Confucian, Buddhist, Shinto, and military traditions were brought together from the late 16th century in ways that influenced the development of institutions and social structures on the Japanese archipelago. These influences brought the social structures closer in form and substance to certain caste formations found in the Indian subcontinent during the same period. Specifically, Amos analyses the evolution of the so-called Danzaemon outcaste order. This order was a 17th century caste configuration produced as a consequence of early modern Tokugawa rulers’ decisions to engage in a state-building project rooted in military logic and built on the back of existing manorial and tribal-class arrangements. He further examines the history behind the primary duties expected of outcastes within the Danzaemon order: notably execution and policing, as well as leather procurement. Reinterpreting Japan as a caste society, this book propels us to engage in fuller comparisons of how outcaste communities’ histories and challenges have diverged and converged over time and space, and to consider how better to eradicate discrimination based on caste logic. This book will appeal to anyone interested in Japanese History, Culture and Society.
