Book Synopsis Cervantes' "Don Quixote" by : Roberto González Echevarría
Download or read book Cervantes' "Don Quixote" written by Roberto González Echevarría and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2015-04-28 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The novel Don Quixote, written in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, is widely considered to be one of the greatest fictional works in the entire canon of Western literature. At once farcical and deeply philosophical, Cervantes’ novel and its characters have become integrated into the cultures of the Western Hemisphere, influencing language and modern thought while inspiring art and artists such as Richard Strauss and Pablo Picasso. Based on Professor Roberto González Echevarría’s popular open course at Yale University, this essential guide to the enduring Spanish classic facilitates a close reading of Don Quixote in the artistic and historical context of renaissance and baroque Spain while exploring why Cervantes’ masterwork is still widely read and relevant today. González Echevarría addresses the novel’s major themes and demonstrates how the story of an aging, deluded would-be knight-errant embodies that most modern of predicaments: the individual’s dissatisfaction with the world in which he lives, and his struggle to make that world mesh with his desires.

Download or read book Cervantes' Don Quixote written by Roberto Gonzalez Echevarria and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-04-10 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This casebook gathers a collection of ambitious essays about both parts of the novel (1605 and 1615) and also provides a general introduction and a bibliography. The essays range from Ram?n Men?ndez Pidal's seminal study of how Cervantes dealt with chivalric literature to Erich Auerbachs polemical study of Don Quixote as essentially a comic book by studying its mixture of styles, and include Leo Spitzer's masterful probe into the essential ambiguity of the novel through minute linguistic analysis of Cervantes' prose. The book includes pieces by other major Cervantes scholars, such as Manuel Dur?n and Edward C. Riley, as well as younger scholars like Georgina Dopico Black. All these essays ultimately seek to discover that which is peculiarly Cervantean in Don Quixote and why it is considered to be the first modern novel.
Book Synopsis Pastoral Themes and Forms in Cervantes's Fiction by : Dominick L. Finello
Download or read book Pastoral Themes and Forms in Cervantes's Fiction written by Dominick L. Finello and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Pastoral Themes and Forms in Cervantes's Fiction explores the various pastoral dimensions of Cervantes's art, from his early Galatea, which is a pastoral novel, to his masterful Don Quijote de la Mancha. Dominick Finello here focuses on the pastoral's impact on the composition of Don Quijote: its rural backdrop of a rustic Spain; the literary inheritance of its characters and style; its dialogic structure, which reflects that of the pastoral novel; and the vital stimulus produced by Cervantes's direct observation of the effects of imaginative pastoral disguises and mimetic play on its characters, including bucolic games, the representation of eclogues and masques, and other such diversions. The blending of pastoral themes and forms into his fiction has led Cervantes to ring major changes on conventional patterns of the pastoral." "The pastoral's congenial interaction with the creativity of Don Quijote is apparent in the novel's settings and character conception. With regard to the settings, pastoral style in the Quijote focuses specifically on the geographical configuration and rural backdrop of Don Quijote's adventures and eventually places them in the context of the history of pastoral nomadism on the Iberian peninsula. With regard to characters, shepherds, goatherds, farmers, and other rural people appear everywhere in the Quijote; and Sancho Panza is the leading rustic personage from this group. Sancho's felicitous projection of pastoral life reflects his fundamental optimism. Don Quijote is linked to the literary shepherd through his discourse on the golden age, his imitation of the lovelord shepherd in the Sierra Morena episode of part 1, and the "Pastor Quijotiz" scheme, which signals his demise late in part 2. Dulcinea, Don Quijote's beloved, is conceived with both the rustic and literary dimensions of the pastoral heroine." "One of the essential features of the Quijote is its dialogic structure, which reflects that of the Renaissance academic colloquium and that of the pastoral novel. Another vital pastoral stimulus of Cervantes's art is his direct observation of the effects of imaginative pastoral disguises and mimetic play on his characters. The documented social customs involving pastoral mimesis (such as eclogues, masques, and games) indicate that pastoral expression and values have been integrated to a significant degree into the fabric of the lives of Cervantes's characters." "Cervantes's attitude toward the pastoral may be established through direct statements he made about pastoral authors, poems, and books. It may also be constituted through less direct means - such as the abrupt conclusion and subsequent disappearance of pastoral stories from the main narrative of the Quijote."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Synopsis Don Quixote and Catholicism by : Michael McGrath
Download or read book Don Quixote and Catholicism written by Michael McGrath and published by Purdue University Press. This book was released on 2020-08-15 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four hundred years since its publication, Miguel de Cervantes’s Don Quixote continues to inspire and to challenge its readers. The universal and timeless appeal of the novel, however, has distanced its hero from its author and its author from his own life and the time in which he lived. The discussion of the novel’s Catholic identity, therefore, is based on a reading that returns Cervantes’s hero to Cervantes’s text and Cervantes to the events that most shaped his life. The authors and texts McGrath cites, as well as his arguments and interpretations, are mediated by his religious sensibility. Consequently, he proposes that his study represents one way of interpreting Don Quixote and acts as a complement to other approaches. It is McGrath’s assertion that the religiosity and spirituality of Cervantes’s masterpiece illustrate that Don Quixote is inseparable from the teachings of Catholic orthodoxy. Furthermore, he argues that Cervantes’s spirituality is as diverse as early modern Catholicism. McGrath does not believe that the novel is primarily a religious or even a serious text, and he considers his arguments through the lens of Cervantine irony, satire, and multiperspectivism. As a Roman Catholic who is a Hispanist, McGrath proposes to reclaim Cervantes’s Catholicity from the interpretive tradition that ascribes a predominantly Erasmian reading of the novel. When the totality of biographical and sociohistorical events and influences that shaped Cervantes’s religiosity are considered, the result is a new appreciation of the novel’s moral didactic and spiritual orientation.
Download or read book 'Lector Ludens' written by Michael Scham and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2014-09-17 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Spain, debating the acceptability of games and recreation was serious business. With Lector Ludens, Michael Scham uses Cervantes’s Don Quijote and Novelas ejemplares as the basis for a wide-ranging exploration of early modern Spanish views on recreations ranging from cards and dice to hunting, attending the theater, and reading fiction. Shifting fluidly between modern theories of play, little-known Spanish treatises on leisure and games, and the evidence in Cervantes’s own works, Scham illuminates Cervantes’s intense fascination with games, play, and leisure, as well as the tensions in early modern Spain between the stern moralizing of the Counter-Reformation and the playfulness of Renaissance humanism.

Book Synopsis Don Quixote's Delusions by : Miranda France
Download or read book Don Quixote's Delusions written by Miranda France and published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson. This book was released on 2012-12-20 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A humorous and affectionate look at modern Spain, and a celebration of the country's greatest book, from the pen of a brilliant young writer. When in 1987 Miranda France spent a year living in Madrid, the post-dictatorship ebullience was at its height. Pornography and soft drugs were legalised alongside more basic freedoms, such as divorce, party-affiliation and kissing in the street. In 1998 she returned to make a journey through the great cities and towns of central Spain - Madrid, Toledo, Segovia, Salamanca and others. With the new prosperity, much has changed. But much has also endured, as she learns from the people she meets, who include a private detective, a shepherd, various nuns, two belly dancers and a Castilian separatist. She also discovers that Cervantes' DON QUIXOTE' published in 1605 and the most translated book after the Bible - is a work of genius which still helps to explain the Spanish character: today's Spaniards still suffer from Don Quixote's delusions, and are as stubborn, inflexible and unrealistic as they have always been.

Book Synopsis Cervantes and His Postmodern Constituencies by : Anne J. Cruz
Download or read book Cervantes and His Postmodern Constituencies written by Anne J. Cruz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-24 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this collection represent the first effort in Hispanism to address the conflicted status of Cervantes studies by interrogating the possibility of continued critical dialogue in the context of postmodern theories that threaten to divide into oppositional discourses. Comprising broad historical overviews as well as close readings of texts, and wielding the rhetoric of scientific detachment and of impassioned political commitments, the essays at once exemplify and critique multiple critical positions. The collection takes a meaningful and timely look at the formation of cervantismo from the early twentieth century to the prevailing debates on postmodernism and the current crisis of literary studies.
