Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The articles in this book focus on a type of Freemasonry that has long been a subject of controversy. Known as Cerneauism, it refers to Scottish Rite bodies which derived authority from Joseph Cerneau (1763-1840/45), a Frenchman who was the charter master of La Temple des Vertus Theologalis No. 103, a Pennsylvania lodge in Havana, Cuba. He fled to New York after being expelled from Cuba in 1806, after fleeing there from the slave rebellion in Haiti in 1802. The central issue with Cerneauism is the question of authority, i.e., the right to create and govern Masonic organizations. Masonic bodies worldwide maintain that the right and authority to create and preside over rites, orders, and systems must stem from a just and regular succession, with adherence to applicable constitutions, laws, and statutes. Cerneauism was a challenge to the concept of regularity because Joseph Cerneau did not personally possess any authority within the Scottish Rite, nor did he accept its governing constitutions.

Why have eight popes condemned the Lodge? This book, which was first published in 1958 and the first full-length treatment of this subject by an American Catholic in 50 years, was written by William J. Whelan to explain why the Church has warned her sons against affiliating with the Masonic lodge since 1738.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freemasonry has played a significant role in the history of Native Americans since the colonial era—a role whose extent and meaning are fully explored for the first time in this book. The overarching concern of Native American Freemasonry is with how Masonry met specific social and personal needs of Native Americans, a theme developed across three periods: the revolutionary era, the last third of the nineteenth century, and the years following the First World War. Joy Porter positions Freemasonry within its historical context, examining its social and political impact as a transatlantic phenomenon at the heart of the colonizing process. She then explores its meaning for many key Native leaders, for ethnic groups that sought to make connections through it, and for the bulk of its American membership—the white Anglo-Saxon Protestant middle class. Through research gleaned from archives in New York, Philadelphia, Oklahoma, California, and London, Porter shows how Freemasonry’s performance of ritual provided an accessible point of entry to Native Americans and how over time, Freemasonry became a significant avenue for the exchange and co-creation of cultural forms by Indians and non-Indians.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study in American Freemasonry: Based Upon Pike's "Morals and Dogma of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite," "Mackey's Masonic Ritualist," "the Encyclopaedia of Freemasonry," and Other American Masonic Standard Works So soon has a new edition of this volume become necessary that we must content ourselves with correcting such minor (typographical) errors as have been brought to our notice. It is a pleasure to be able to say that the reviews of this Study, so far published, in this country, in Canada, in South America, and in Europe, have been uniformly favorable. Catholics have hailed the book as a necessary and useful publication. Even Freemasons have been constrained to acknowledge its objectivity and calmness of tone. Thus a Masonic writer in the Missouri Historical Review says: "A Study in American Freemasonry... is based upon Pike's 'Morals and Dogma of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite' Mackey's works, and publications of other Masonic writers. It is written in a calm, argumentative manner, giving authorities for all the allegations that the author makes, so that no offense is felt by a Mason while reading it, though he may see the mistake of the author in the conclusion given by him." This "mistake" our critic specifies as follows: "The majority of American Masons adopt the York Rite of Masonry leading from the Blue Lodge through the Chapter to the Commandery of Knights Templar. In the Scottish Rite leading from the same Lodge to the 33 rd degree there is more of philosophic teaching, but Masons would reply to the assertions of the author, that in neither branch is there taught any concealed religion, philosophy or science, but that these are all fully set forth in the monitorial or esoteric Masonry, the esoteric Masonry being merely the forms of initiation and not a changing or addition to the monitorial part." Book excerpt: Uncover the fascinating truth behind Freemasonry and incorporate symbolic rituals into your life with this remarkably detailed and comprehensive insider's guide. Jean-Louis de Biasi, a 32nd Degree Freemason who's been involved in the order for over twenty years, offers a candid look at the essential aspects of Freemasonry. Basing his work on original texts and archaeological findings, de Biasi details the Masonic tradition's history, the degree-based system of the Scottish Rite, and their ethical teachings and philosophies. He provides evidence of Freemasonry's origination in the Ancient Western Mysteries and its Hermetic and Qabalistic underpinnings, and then traces how the Founding Fathers used this knowledge to embed sacred symbolism into the U.S. Capitol and throughout Washington, DC. From the power-charged grids within architecture to Albert Pike's highly influential teachings, from the Rose-Cross mysteries to the Masonic themes in Dan Brown's popular books, Secrets and Practices of the Freemasons shines a revelatory light on this captivating subject. Also featured: genuine Masonic meditations and individual rituals with easy-to-follow instructions, plus interviews with scientists who lend their perspectives on Freemasonry as it is viewed and practiced today.
