Book Synopsis Colony, Nation, and Globalisation by : Eddie Tay
Download or read book Colony, Nation, and Globalisation written by Eddie Tay and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 2010-06-01 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The literature of Malaysia and Singapore, the multicultural epicentre of Asia, offers a rich body of source material for appreciating the intellectual heritage of colonial and postcolonial Southeast Asia. Focusing on themes of home and belonging, Eddie Tay illuminates many aspects of identity anxiety experienced in the region, and helps construct a dialogue between postcolonial theory and the Anglophone literatures of Singapore and Malaysia. A chronologically ordered selection of texts is examined including Swettenham, Bird, Maugham, Burgess, and Thumboo. This genealogy of works includes colonial travel writings and sketches as well as contemporary diasporic novels by Malaysian and Singapore-born authors based outside their countries of origin. The premise is that home is a physical space as well as a symbolic terrain invested with social, political and cultural meanings. As discussions of politics and history augment close readings of literary works, the book should appeal not only to scholars of literature, but also to scholars of Southeast Asian politics and history.

Book Synopsis Tragic Orphans by : Carl Vadivella Belle
Download or read book Tragic Orphans written by Carl Vadivella Belle and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 2014-12-30 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1938, noting that the bulk of the Indian population formed a “landless proletariat” and despairing of the ability of the factionalized Indian community to unite in pursuit of common objectives, activist K.A. Neelakanda Ayer forecast that the fate of Indians in Malaya would be to become “Tragic orphans – of whom India has forgotten and Malaya looks down upon with contempt”. Ayer’s words continue to resonate; as a minority group in a nation dominated politically by colonially derived narratives of “race” and ethnicity and riven by the imperatives of religion, the general trajectory of the economically and politically impotent Indian community has been one of increasing irrelevance. This book explores the history of the modern Indian presence in Malaysia, and traces the vital role played by the Indian community in the construction of contemporary Malaysia. In this comprehensive new study, Carl Vadivella Belle offers fresh insights on the Indian experience spanning the period from the colonial recruitment of Indian labour to the post-Merdeka political, economic and social marginalization of Indians. While recent Indian challenges to the political status quo — a regime described as that of “benign neglect” — promoted Indian hopes of reform, change and uplift, the author concludes that the dictates of political discourse permeated by the ideologies of communalism offer limited prospects for meaningful change.
Book Synopsis English in Southeast Asia by : David Prescott
Download or read book English in Southeast Asia written by David Prescott and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-05-05 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents a new publishing venture in terms of its range of concerns with regard to English in Southeast Asia. The chapters in the volume reflect the interests and themes of the annual Conferences on English in Southeast Asia held since 1996 among participating universities from nine countries: Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Philippines, Australia, Hong Kong, Thailand Indonesia and New Zealand. This is believed to be the first time that such diversity and coverage has been published in a single volume. The three sections of the book cover topics which have been consistently discussed at the conferences during the last ten years. The Varieties section features chapters on phonology, dictionary making, syntax, code-switching and the communicative strategies of English speakers from ASEAN countries. The Literacies section focuses on ICT in English language teaching, Information literacy, bilingual and multilingual issues in Southeast Asia, recent developments in English language teaching and education in Thailand and questions of heritage and identity with respect to English in Malaysia. In the Literatures section the concerns are with new generation writings in English in Malaysia, the literature read by young Filipinos, the use of English in Malaysian newspapers in the context of general elections, the discourses of Asian English newspapers in relation to notions like “globalisation” and “global English” and ASEAN English on Internet websites. As a collection of work by experienced academics engaged in the issues germane to the roles and status of English in Southeast Asia this volume is an excellent resource for university students, university teaching and research staff and university library collections.
