Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ceremonies of the Pomo Indians Dances are even yet to be seen in connection with some celebrations, principally on the Fourth of July, but there now remains so little that is really primitive about these that they are virtually worthless to the student. Information obtained through direct observation is at present, therefore, impossible, and we must depend for our knowledge of Pomo ceremonies and ceremonial organization upon the statements of the older men, and particularly those concerned with such matters in former days. From such sources rather full information con cerning some of the ceremonies and dances is obtainable, but, under the circumstances, it is impossible to secure exhaustive data concerning all of them. In many instances informants recall only a few of the details of a given ceremony or dance. Sometimes only its name is remembered. Doubtless even the recollection of some ceremonies and dances has been lost. During a residence in the Pomo region from 1892 to 1904 the existing vestiges of some of these Pomo ceremonies were observed whenever possible, but no attempt at a systematic collection of data on the subject was made until 1903 and 1904, when this work was undertaken in conjunction with the collection of Pomo myths, as part of the investigations of the Ethnological and Archaeological Survey of California, maintained by the Department of Anthropology of the University of California through the generosity of Mrs. Phoebe A. Hearst. This information was obtained from informants of three Pomo dialects - Northern, Central, and Eastern. Where a native term is used in the following pages, therefore, the dialect is indicated by N, C, or E, in parentheses directly after it. The phonetic system employed is fully explained in The ethno-geography of the Pomo Indians. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ceremonial Societies of the Quileute Indians As soon as a man (or woman) receives a hunter's guardian spirit, he becomes sick. A shaman is consulted who, by the color, ascertains the kind of sickness. The color being dark brown, the shaman declares the patient to have been rendered sick by a guar dian-spirit of the gel/a'akwcif (the Hunting Society). Thereupon a messenger is sent to all other members of this society inviting them to come to the house of the patient and to lend their assistance in curing him. The members arrive in the evening, wearing the appropriate head-rings, and their faces are painted by the Face painter. The full members are painted in accordance with the instructions received from their guardian-spirits. Following are the most common designs: the whole face dark brown; the upper part brown and the lower white; the upper half brown with vertical red stripes (the red lines represent showers) and the lower half white; the whole face red (representing blood) with white stripes on both cheeks (these stripes represent showers). Plain members have only dark brown dots painted on their cheeks. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pomo Bear Doctors In the second place, the power of the doctor was thought to reside wholly in his bearskin suit, or parts thereof, and apparently was considered the result of an elaborate ceremony performed in its manu facture and subsequent donning. This distinctly ritualistic side of the bear doctor's practices removes him still more clearly from the class of the true shaman.
