The extraordinary innovations of Chinese potters court among the most outstanding accomplishments in the cultural heritage of the world since the Neolithic era. Systematic study of Chinese ceramics, begun in the eighteenth century with the French Jesuit Pere d'Entrecolles, has been greatly enlarged in the twentieth century, and since the end of the Cultural Revolution in 1976, extensive excavations at kiln sites have yielded invaluable new insights into the chronological development of ceramic forms, glaze types and decorative styles. This remarkable book cites all the latest scientific and archaeological evidence, examining provenance, technique, archaeological and historical context, and ancient traditions of Chinese connoisseurship and patronage to provide an integrated and highly detailed approach to the subject." Download or read book Fritz Scholder written by Fritz Scholder and published by Prestel Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now available again, this stunning volume examines the life and work of Fritz Scholder, the most influential, successful, and controversial Native American artist of the twentieth century. In the 1960s and '70s, the notion of American Indian art was turned on its head by artists who fought against prejudice and popular cliches. At the forefront of this revolution was Scholder (1937-2005), whose portrayals of Native American life combined realism, tragedy, and spirituality with the genres of abstract expressionism and pop art. This volume features hundreds of works from Scholder's career as a painter, printmaker, and sculptor. Essays explore the artist's major themes-humanity's place in the natural world, ancient mythical beings, women, Christian iconography, the millennium, and the afterlife as well as Scholder's role in the Native American community and the art world. A fascinating figure who fearlessly took on his own contradictions and those of his times, Scholder continues to generate passionate discussion. Fritz Scholder: Indian/Not Indian offers a lively, insightful exploration of his place in twentieth-century American art history as a colourist, expressionist, and figurative painter.

Book Synopsis Wares of the Ming Dynasty by : R. L. Hobson
Download or read book Wares of the Ming Dynasty written by R. L. Hobson and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 1998-05-15 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains and illustrates as many varieties of Ming ceramics as possible. The text is based primarily on information obtained from Chinese sources and the occasional notes made by Europeans who visited China in Ming times. To these, Mr. Hobson has added his own penetrating deductions, made after careful study of well-authenticated specimens and of observation by earlier scholars. His presentation is not only clear and precise but also incontestably authoritative and at the same time highly readable. The first twelve chapters of the book deal almost exclusively with the porcelain produced at Ching-te Chen; the next four, with the porcelain and pottery made at other centers. The bulk of the 129 pieces illustrated (12 in color) are drawn from private collections, but references is also made to important examples in museums. Of particular interest are Mr. Hobson's comments on collecting and on the identification of genuine Ming wares. A special chapter on marks, inscriptions, and Chinese characters is included, together with a selected bibliography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: This catalogue of the Meiyintang collection completes a cycle of publications that record the formidable commitment of two discerning European connoisseurs to assemble the finest private collection of Chinese ceramics: indeed, their knowledge, sensibility and determination resulted in a more complete documentation of this subject than almost any museum collection can offer today, and the four-volume catalogue of this collection offers probably the most comprehensive illustrated coverage of Chinese ceramics available in print. Volumes One and Two, published in 1994, presented Chinese ceramics from the Neolithic to the Qing dynasty (c. 5th millennium bc to 19th century ad). Volume Three, published in 2006, concentrated again on the early ceramics; the present two books, which together form Volume Four and cover the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasty (14th to 19th century), highlight the imperial Chinese porcelains from Jingdezhen in Jiangxi province.
