Book excerpt: Four years ago when we had finished our work on the first edition of our Handbook we didn't even suppose that three years later it would become necessary to greatly revise and update the material. It happened because of the following developments. 1. The invention and tremendous development of modern nonlinear optical crystals such as BBO, LBO, KTP, ZnGeP , etc. 2 2. Rapid progress in laser techniques (femtosecond CPM laser, Ti: sapphire laser, diode-pumped solid-state lasers, etc.). 3. The appearence of numerous organic crystals which can be synthesized with predictable properties. 4. Progress in the theory of nonlinear frequency conversion utilizing biaxial crystals, femtosecond pulses, etc. 5. Accumulation of new data on the properties of nonlinear optical crystals. In accordance with the above, we have made many changes in the text. The first chapter was revised by D.N. Nikogosyan, the second one by V.G. Dmitriev and D.N. Nikogosyan, and the fourth one by G.G. Gurzadyan. The third chapter, containing the main reference material on 77 nonlinear optical crystals was completely rewritten and updated by D.N. Nikogosyan. The Appendix containing the list of most commonly used laser wavelengths was compiled by D.N. Nikogosyan. We would appreciate any valuable comments and recommendations that will allow us to further improve the Handbook. We would like to thank H.K.V. Lotsch for fruitful and long-lasting cooperation.

Book excerpt: Electro-optic (EO) materials allow for the precise control of light using electrical signals, which has allowed for the advancement of an incredible array of photonic technologies such as laser systems and optical telecommunications. Most EO devices currently utilize single crystals, but high performance EO single crystals often have composition limitations since dopants can segregate and not all compositions can be grown using equilibrium restricted techniques. Bulk polycrystalline ceramic materials can potentially overcome such limitations and allow for the exploration of new EO systems. Due to the specific microstructures required for transparency, conventional processing techniques have difficulty in producing bulk polycrystalline EO ceramics. Reported here for the first time are the optical and EO properties of a new class of transparent lead free ceramic that outperforms EO materials in use today. This material is a barium titanate (BaTiO3) based solid solution, (1-x)Ba(Zr0.2Ti0.8)O 3-x(Ba0.7Ca0.3)TiO3 referred to here as BXT. The EO material was successfully processed using the Current Activated Pressure Assisted Densification (CAPAD) technique, commonly called Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS), which has been shown to be effective at consolidating optical materials. Using this technique along with a new powder synthesis method, it was possible to produce a transparent EO BXT ceramic with a highly dense and homogeneously reacted microstructure. Densified BXT shows a remarkable EO coefficient of 530 pm/V, which is superior not only to state of the art LiNbO3 crystals but also top-quality lead containing ferroelectric ceramics such as PLZT. This exceptional coefficient will allow for miniaturized EO systems with reduced operating voltages. The mechanisms behind the high EO performance in BXT were determined using additional EO and ferroelectric measurements. These measurements indicate that BXT undergoes a field induced structural evolution which heavily contributes to the EO effect. Along with efficient domain motion, this structural evolution includes a field induced phase change to a lower symmetry crystal structure. This work shows that lead free EO polycrystalline ceramics can have properties that are competitive or superior to state of the art EO materials. Due to its exceptional EO properties, BXT in particular has a promising future as an EO material.

Book excerpt: Nonlinear optics and ferroelectrics have been recognized for several decades as promising fields with important applications in the area of opto-electronics, photonics, memory devices, etc. High performance electro-optical switching elements for telecommunications and optical information processing are based on the material properties. Hence, there is always a continuous search for new and better materials. In this thesis we have investigated the growth and physical properties of four crystals viz. two NLO and two ferroelectric crystals. This thesis consists of eight chapters. The first chapter gives an overview of historical perspectives of nonlinear optical phenomenon, ferroelectricity and materials developed therein. The second chapter gives a brief description of the underlying theories of crystal growth, nonlinear optics and ferroelectricity. A major portion of this chapter consists of gist of the earlier work carried out on compounds of our interest viz. urea L-malic acid, sodium p-nitrophenolate dihydrate, glycine phosphite and lithium niobate. Synthesis, growth, crystal structure details and some physical properties of these materials are briefed. The third chapter describes the experimental techniques needed to grow as well as characterize these crystals. The experiments are performed on single crystals grown in the laboratory using the solution growth setup and Czochralski crystal puller. These growth units are described in detail. Preliminary characterization techniques like powder Xray diffraction, optical transmission, scanning electron microscopy, Vickers and Knoop hardness are described briefly. Various experimental methods viz. dielectric, polarization reversal, photoacoustic spectroscopy and laser induced damage for characterizing the grown crystals are explained. Urea L-malic acid (ULMA) is a new NLO organic material which is reported to exhibit second harmonic efficiency three times that of the widely used inorganic crystal, KDP. Hence, this mater.
