Book excerpt: Excerpt from Century of Puritanism, and a Century of Its Opposites: With Results Contrasted to Enforce Puritan Principles, and to Trace What Is Peculiar in the People of Lynn to What Is Peculiar in Its History This work was first produced in the form of lectures for the pulpit; and that form is now only partially thrown off. So far as the interest of the book might be enhanced by retaining it, it has been retained. The work was first undertaken for the simple purpose of writing the history of the First Church of Lynn. Book excerpt: By tracing core discontents, the essays restore the anxiety-ridden radical nature of Puritanism, helping to account for its force in the seventeenth century and the popular and scholarly interest that it continues to evoke. Innovative and challenging in scope and argument, the volume should be of interest to scholars of early modern British and American history, literature, culture, and religion."--BOOK JACKET.

Excerpt: ...dissolved, at the same time declaring their readiness to refer the matter to a council, if he desired it. When Colonel Mansfield communicated this vote to Mr. Parsons, he merely replied, that he had nothing to say. Mr. Parsons's actual ministry ended at the time when he made terms of agreement with the parish to that effect. At that time he preached a farewell sermon. And as he regarded the Methodists as the cause of his difficulties, he directed the main force of his parting benedictions towards them. He is represented to have been a man of strong natural talents, a person of large frame and fine appearance, eminently social in his habits, but more devoted to his own pleasures than to the work of the ministry. He scrupled not to take his place in every scene of conviviality. But in those times such habits might not have discredited him, had there been no grounds of suspicion affecting his chastity. When he left Lynn, he returned to Gloucester, and engaged in teaching--where he remained till he died, at the age of fifty-five, in the year 1801. He had graduated at Cambridge in 1768, and was ordained pastor of the third church in Gloucester, November 11, 1772. He was dismissed November 15, 1779, and installed in Lynn in 1784. The ministries of Mr. Treadwell and Mr. Parsons, though both were depressing to the vitality of the church, presented strong points of contrast. Mr. Treadwell appears to have been a gentleman of spotless character. His records show that he was, according to his principles, solicitous for the welfare of the church. But Mr. Parsons has not so much as left us any records. The talents and respectability of Mr. Treadwell may be gathered from the positions which he attained in civil life after he left the ministry. From Lynn...

Book excerpt: On fire for God--a sweeping history of puritanism in England and America Begun in the mid-sixteenth century by Protestant nonconformists keen to reform England's church and society while saving their own souls, the puritan movement was a major catalyst in the great cultural changes that transformed the early modern world. Providing a uniquely broad transatlantic perspective, this groundbreaking volume traces puritanism's tumultuous history from its initial attempts to reshape the Church of England to its establishment of godly republics in both England and America and its demise at the end of the seventeenth century. Shedding new light on puritans whose impact was far-reaching as well as on those who left only limited traces behind them, Michael Winship delineates puritanism's triumphs and tribulations and shows how the puritan project of creating reformed churches working closely with intolerant godly governments evolved and broke down over time in response to changing geographical, political, and religious exigencies.

Book excerpt: This stimulating and controversial book explores how the religious and political turmoil of 17th century England set the tone of the American character in the Puritans it sent to our shores. The book traces the Puritans' emergence early in the reign of Elizabeth I; the spectrum of their religious and political beliefs; and their creed of purity and asceticism in the name of Christ that found many followers at all levels of English society. The fear that their radical ideas engendered in the reigning Church and government, and their own frustration at the failure of their aims at home led them finally on their brave course across the ocean to America. Adair contends that their fierce morality and sense of independence became a major force in shaping the American character, and that it is these two traits that are still distinctly part of the culture that we export abroad.

Book excerpt: This exhaustive treatment of the Puritan movement covers its doctrines, its people, its effects on politics and culture, and its enduring legacy in modern Britain and America. Puritanism began in the 1530s as a reform movement within the Church of England. It endured into the 18th century. In between, it powerfully influenced the course of political events both in Britain and in the United States. Puritanism shaped the American colonies, particularly New England. It was a key ingredient in literature, from authors as diverse as John Milton and Nathaniel Hawthorne. Although Puritanism as a formal movement has been gone for more than 300 years, its influence continues on the mores and norms of America and Britain. This ambitious work contains nearly 700 entries covering people, events, ideas, and doctrines—the whole of Puritanism. Exhaustive and authoritative, it draws on the work of more than 80 leading scholars in the field. Impeccable scholarship combines with eminent readability to make this a valuable work for all readers and researchers from secondary school up.
