Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Middlesbrough as a town is one that dates back less than two centuries, with the emergence of the modern urban centre the product of Victorian industrialisation and rapid urban expansion. Despite this relatively short history, the fascination and pride in Middlesbrough’s heritage is as strong as that found in established historical towns, evokes poignant memories and prompts lively debates. Memories of Middlesbrough in the 1970s and 1980s includes over 100 historic photographs of many of the town’s familiar landmarks and provides an insight into a period that brought unprecedented change. Inspired by the photographs of John Severs, Teesside Archives and other private and public collections, the book charts demolition of historic buildings, the disappearance of many industries, regeneration, sporting glories and shares the memories of the people of Middlesbrough.

Great War Britain: Middlesbrough offers an intimate portrayal of the town and its people living in the shadow of the "war to end all wars." A beautifully illustrated and highly accessible volume, it describes local reaction to the outbreak of war; charts the experience of individuals who enlisted; the changing face of industry; the work of the many hospitals in the area; the effect of the conflict on local children; the women who defied convention to play a vital role on the home front; and concludes with a chapter dedicated to how the town and its people coped with the transition to life in peacetime once more. The World War I story of Middlesbrough is told through the voices of those who were there, and is vividly illustrated through evocative images.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1989, this book examines seven different localities, ranging from the outer suburbs of large northern cities to small freestanding town, which were prospering in the 1980s or struggling against the negative employment effects of restructuring. Within the theoretical frame of ‘industrial restructuring’, it traces the development of each locality, exploring in depth the influence of several key elements — deindustrialisation, technological change, the shift to the services in employment — on social composition, political change and local policy. A major contribution to locality studies, this book is essential reading for students of urban and regional studies, and sociology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise of CCTV camera surveillance in Britain has been dramatic. Practically every major city now boasts a CCTV system aimed at, among other things, preventing, detecting and reducing the fear of crime. Increasingly these developments are mirrored in villages, shopping malls, residential estates, transport systems, schools and hospitals throughout the country. In short, for the majority of citizens it is now impossible to avoid being monitored and recorded as we move through public space. Surveillance, CCTV and Social Control represents the first systematic attempt to account for this phenomenon. It brings together leading researchers from the fields of anthropology, criminology, evaluation, geography, sociology and urban planning to explore the development, impact and implications of CCTV surveillance. Accordingly attention is directed to a number of key questions. How does CCTV fit with the trends of late modernity? Does CCTV reduce crime or merely shift it elsewhere? How should CCTV be evaluated? What is the significance of CCTV for women's safety? How adequate is the regulation of CCTV? In the light of recent technological developments what is the future of CCTV surveillance?

Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2003. Suburbanizing the Masses examines how collective forms of transport have contributed to the spatial and social evolution of towns and cities in various countries since the mid nineteenth century. Divided into two sections, the volume develops first the classic tradition on transport and the city, public transport's 'impact' on urban development. The contextualisation of transport is one important factor in the historical debates surrounding urban development. As well as analysing the discourse employed by urban political and business elites in favour of public transport, these contributions show the degree to which practice often fell short of ideals. The second section tackles the professional paradigms of urban transport: the circulation of traffic in cities and the technological modes appropriate to its realization. In particular these contributions explore the paradigms held by professional planners and managers, and the political classes associated with them. From a variety of perspectives Suburbanizing the Masses demonstrates the continuing relevance of socio-historical inquiry on the relationship between public transport and urban development. By differentiating between the many roles of urban transport in the nineteenth century, it confirms that public transport was not directly linked to urban growth, and instead often had only a limited effect on the wider urban structure. Suburbanizing the Masses forces a reassessment of the received historiography that maintains cheap public transport was essential to the spectacular growth of cites in the nineteenth century.
