The phenomenon is considered one of the evil forces triggering acts of terrorism and confl icts around the world. These notions also colour the way we view Sub-Saharan Africa since the Boko Haram uprising in Nigeria in 2009 and the spillover consequences of the Libyan civil war in 2012. This book aims to broaden our understanding of radicalization. It searches for the deeper wellsprings of radicalization as a force not only negative in outcome, but also pregnant with opportunities and vital to social and political change. The book argues that radical ideas and persons appear primarily with a call for change. Certainly, these cries can turn extremely violent and lead to open confl ict, but could this violence have been avoided if the radicalization and people involved had initially been interpreted differently? Following an opening refl ection by a slam artist on the phenomenon of radicalization, the book presents four case studies from the past and six from the present day. The studies are drawn mainly from Sub-Saharan Africa, with one from the Netherlands. By focusing on ‘biographies of radicalization’ the book investigates the history of the phenomenon, the forms it takes, and the pathways that lead a person to become radicalized. Rather than focus on chronological accounts of events, the emphasis is on exploring personal trajectories and inside stories. What can we learn from these individual itineraries and forms of radicalization? Were violent outcomes inevitable, and how might the calls for change have been turned in a different direction? The last three chapters examine pathways out of radicalization, ending with a report on youth in Dakar who directly engage with problematic issues in society and creatively harness the energy for change without becoming violent radicals.

No-fly zones, limited strikes, Special Forces raids, and drone strikes outside 'hot' battlefield have been at the nexus of the moral and strategic debates about just war since the fall of the Berlin Wall but, with the exception of drones, these aspects of the modern arsenal have remained largely undertheorized. Just and Unjust Uses of Limited Force fills that gap by revisiting the major wars animating contemporary just war scholarship (Kosovo, Afghanistan, Iraq, the drone 'wars', and Libya) through the lens of limited force and drawing insights from the just war tradition. Looking at these contemporary examples, the book teases out an ethical account of force-short-of-war. It covers the deliberation about whether to use limited force (jus ad vim), restraints that govern its use (jus in vi), when to stop (jus ex vi), and the after-use context (jus post vim). While these moral categories parallel to some extent their just war counterparts of jus ad bellum, jus in bello, jus post bellum, and jus ex bello, the book illustrates how they can be reimagined and recalibrated in a limited force context, while also introducing new principles specific to the dilemmas associated with escalation and risk. As the argument unfolds, the reader will be presented with a view of limited force as a moral alternative to war, exposed to a series of dilemmas regarding when and how limited force is used, and provided with a more precise and morally enriched vocabulary to talk about limited force and the responsibilities its use entails.

They were used with the permission of the Department of International Relations and Cooperation as sought by Ambassador Matjila. As is recognised in international law, the will of the State, an international legal entity, is expressed through its representatives, physical persons occupying special positions within the State and giving a face to its organs. Thus, these interventions made by the Ambassador to express the position of the Republic of South Africa on the issues under consideration. It is indeed in his capacity of Permanent Representative of South Africa that he was called upon to make these interventions. The work is devoid of any theoretical or doctrinal claim. It is intended to be more informative. This is why it is not accompanied by doctrinal commentaries, nor, consequently, by references to scientific references. The book aspires to be exhaustive, so there was no need to limit or choose the texts that should appear here. To make it a practical and easy-to-use tool, the chronological classification by organ has been preferred to the thematic classification. In the United Nations archiving system, interventions before the Main Committees other than the First Committee are not reproduced in full. only a simple summary is offered. these summaries are also contained in this work and are recognisable by the fact that the name of the Ambassador is quoted at the beginning of the summary. the same applies to interventions made before the Economic and Social Council. The work is divided into 4 parts: the first focuses on statements made before the General Assembly, the second concern the statements before the Economic and Social Council, the third, statements before the Security Council and the last part gathers the presidential statements made during the South African presidency of the Council and the resolutions adopted by the Council after South Africa's sponsorship. It is hoped that as a coffee table book, this collection will help enrich research and discussion about African contributions to the content of multilateralism at the United Nations. The photos inserted at the end of the work show a slice of life and activity of the Ambassador during his stay in New York.
