Book excerpt: Large wood (LW) is a critical component of forested mountain headwater streams that significantly contributes to geomorphic and ecological processes including channel structure, sediment and nutrient dynamics, flow regimes, and habitat formation for fish and aquatic macroinvertebrates. The character of LW is a function of valley recruitment processes that influence LW entering the channel and instream retention processes that influence LW transport through the channel reach. In the central Appalachian Mountains, US, LW dynamics in eastern hemlock-dominated ravines may change due to the invasive insect Hemlock Wooly Adelgid (HWA). However, quantitative LW studies are lacking for this region, yet are necessary for effective management of ecosystem health and processes regarding projected HWA-associated change. We examined LW dynamics across central Appalachian headwater streams (drainage area 20 km2) to identify: 1) the current state of LW loading, 2) the environmental factors that influence LW loading, 3) potential signs of HWA impact on LW dynamics, and 4) functional grouping patterns of LW pieces in these systems. A field study was conducted in 24 streams across southeastern Ohio, West Virginia, and western Virginia that represent a gradient of HWA infestation from 0 (uninfested) to 23 years. At each site, channel morphology, in-stream wood load, and wood recruitment potential were recorded. Mean wood density was 36 pieces/100m ± 21 and mean wood volume was 5.6 m3/100m ± 3.5. Most pieces were less than bankfull width suggesting high transportability, but large pieces (10m) contributed significantly to wood volume, jam formation (>3 LW pieces touching), and geomorphic function. Central Appalachian LW loading was on the lower end of mountain headwater streams reported elsewhere in the world, although comparable to similar stream types in the northeastern US. A mixture of recruitment and retention processes influenced LW dynamics, but channel retention processes better explained LW jam dynamics. Specifically, higher LW load was associated with lower forest basal area, smaller channel dimensions, and lower hydraulic driving forces, which is consistent with other studies. We did not detect a significant influence of HWA infestation even in moderately advanced infestation (e.g., ~20 years) on LW load, which may reflect a lag period between tree mortality, toppling, and LW load. Pieces clustered in three functional groups of: 1) larger, stable pieces that store sediment, stabilize the bank, and create pools, 2) relatively stable pieces that deflect flow and dissipate energy, and 3) smaller pieces associated with flow deflection and energy dissipation composed of mixed stability. This study provides quantitative information on LW dynamics in the central Appalachian region prior to expected environmental change associated with HWA. This information may aid land managers in regulating LW loads and environmental processes influenced by LW including sediment dynamics, aquatic habitat creation, and flow regimes.

Book excerpt: Understanding climate controls on topography and erosion rates reveal the underlying mechanisms operating on the landscape, allowing us to predict landscape response to climate perturbations. The onset of Quaternary glaciations represents a large climate perturbation to the Earth system, though a comparable climate shift is occurring today. Adjacent to continental ice sheets were cold but unglaciated landscapes underlain by permafrost, or perennially frozen soils. These periglacial landscapes would be particularly sensitive to warming: climate modulates soil erodibility, hydrology, and vegetation, such that erodibility varies not only in space but time on seasonal and millennial timescales. The unique combination of hillslope and fluvial processes of permafrost landscapes imply that there could be an erosional and topographic "signature" of permafrost processes compared to temperate climates. In this dissertation I explore whether and how the shape of the hillslopes and channels, as well as long-term erosion rates, are adjusted to periglacial conditions compared to temperate climates. I focus on the central Appalachian Mountains, which, like other mid-latitude settings, was underlain by permafrost during previous glacial periods, yet the relative magnitude of erosion during warm and cold climates, as well as in transition periods, remains unquantified. I generate a high-resolution climate and erosion record of a single warming phase to determine how specific climate factors affect hillslope erosion mechanisms. I pair these results with a Quaternary erosion record to show that periglacial conditions promote efficient hillslope erosion compared to temperate conditions. I then demonstrate that the permafrost-mediated hillslope and channel erosion dynamics inferred from sedimentary archives is also borne out in hillslope-channel form on paleoclimate gradients in central Appalachia. This thesis isolates the mechanisms through which periglaciation affects erosion rates and processes and quantifies the role past climates have played in Appalachia's modern geomorphology. I also show that these principles can be used to identify erosion signatures of ongoing warming in Arctic landscapes.

Book excerpt: How prisons became economic development strategies for rural Appalachian communities As the United States began the project of mass incarceration, rural communities turned to building prisons as a strategy for economic development. More than 350 prisons have been built in the U.S. since 1980, with certain regions of the country accounting for large shares of this dramatic growth. Central Appalachia is one such region; there are eight prisons alone in Eastern Kentucky. If Kentucky were its own country, it would have the seventh highest incarceration rate in the world. In Coal, Cages, Crisis, Judah Schept takes a closer look at this stunning phenomenon, providing insight into prison growth, jail expansion and rising incarceration rates in America’s hinterlands. Drawing on interviews, site visits, and archival research, Schept traces recent prison growth in the region to the rapid decline of its coal industry. He takes us inside this startling transformation occurring in the coalfields, where prisons are often built on top of old coalmines, including mountaintop removal sites, and built into community planning approaches to crises of unemployment, population loss, and declining revenues. By linking prison growth to other sites in this landscape—coal mines, coal waste, landfills, and incinerators—Schept shows that the prison boom has less to do with crime and punishment and much more with the overall extraction, depletion, and waste disposal processes that characterize dominant development strategies for the region.
