Book excerpt: Excerpt from Central and South America, Vol. 1 Quichuas (peruvians) and Aymaras (bolivians), the origin of the marvellous Tiahuanaco monuments, and of other remains of native American culture. Attention has also been claimed by the recent political changes in the West Indies, by frontier questions, as between British Guiana and Venezuela, and between Chili and Argentina, by inter-oceanic Ship-canal projects, by transcontinental railway schemes, and by the altered economic conditions, especially in Mexico, Chili, Brazil, and Argentina. All these transformations called for adequate treatment, if only to Show that in the New World, material and moral progress is no longer confined to An glo-saxon America, and that henceforth the hispano-lusitanian common wealths enter into the comity of the other cultured nations on a footing of absolute equality and independ ence. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Central America, Vol. 1: 1501-1530 During the year 1875 I published under title of The Native Races of the Pacific States what purports to be an exhaustive research into the character and customs of the aboriginal inhabitants of the western portion of North America at the time they were first seen by their subduers. The present work is a history of the same territory from the coming of the Euro peans. The plan is extensive and can be here but brie y ex plained. The territory covered embraces the whole of Central America and Mexico, and all Anglo -american domains west of the Rocky Mountains. First given is a glance at European society, particularly Spanish civilization at about the close of the fifteenth century. This is followed by a summary of maritime explora tion from the fourth century to the year 1540, with some notices of the earliest American books. Then, beginning with the discoveries of Columbus, the men from Europe are closely followed as one after another they find and take possession of the coun try in its several parts, and the doings of their successors are chronicled. The result is a history or the pacific states or north america, under the following general divisions - History of Central America; History of Mexico; History of the North Mexican States; History of New Mexico and Arizona. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Central America, the West Indies and South America IN the present volume it has been the chief object of the Editor to adapt Von Hellwald's admirably-written survey of the countries treated of, to the presumed requirements of English readers, To this end the information contained in the works of many recent British travellers, overlooked by the German author, or published since his volume appeared, has been utilised, and statistical details corrected throughout in accordance with the most recent accessible data. In other respects the chief alterations introduced have been in reference to Natural History and the Geo graphical Relations of Faunas and Floras. Wherever these important subjects were treated of by Von Bellwald, it appeared to the Editor that the facts and their applica tions were not given with the accuracy which is noticeable in other portions of his work, and it was found necessary, therefore, wholly to recast these sections. In doing this, however, nothing has been introduced but what is likely to be perfectly intelligible and interesting to the general reader. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Across Unknown South America, Vol. 1 of 2 South America is, to my mind, the Coming Conti nent -the Continent of the future. Everybody knows the wealth of the Argentine, Peru, Chile, and Bolivia; but the interior of Brazil, the largest and richest country of all, not unlike forbidden Tibet, was perhaps better known a century or two ago than now. Few people realize that Brazil is larger than the United States of North America, Germany, Portugal, and a few other countries taken together. The interior is practically a term incognita - although the ancient Jesuits and, at a later date, escaped slaves and native rubber collectors have perhaps found their way inland to a considerable distance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Earth and Its Inhabitants, Vol. 1: South America Nor have physical geographers failed to notice the resemblance in the contour lines of the two main sections of the New World itself, both of triangular form, with apex pointing southwards, and with orographic and hydrographic systems presenting many features in common. Here the chief contrasts between the northern and southern divisions are in fact, mainly due to the differences of latitude, compared with which the diversities of outline are of relatively slight importance. Such diversities, however, require to be carefully noted. South America, with far more clearly marked periphery, is sharply limited in the north-west by the fluvial valley of the Atrato, which is connected by a very low pass with the marshy gulf of San Juan. Thus the continent, taken as a whole, may be regarded as a vast insular region somewhat analogous to Australia. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Central South America With the West Indies The modern teaching of geography, like that of history, lays increasing stress on the value of original authorities. One of the first steps in this direction was the bibliography appended to Sir Archibald Geikie's Tracking of Geography, followed in 1897 by Dr. H. R. Mill's Hints to Teachers ami tit intents on the Choice of Geographical Hooks, compiled at the request of the Geographical Association. The present series goes a step further, and attempts to depict the world in the language of men who have seen it. The difficulties of the task of selection, and of avoiding either deficiency or redundancy, have been exceedingly great. Many excellent extracts have had to be rejected on account of their length, or because they dealt with matters of secondary importance, or, still more often, because an individual author was already too fully represented. In several eases a certain amount of condensation has been necessary. This has been effected by omission where necessary. It is hardly necessary to say that the series is intended as a stimulus to, and not as a substitute for, individual reading, and to this end a number of additional references are given without quotation, and a somewhat full bibliography is appended. From almost every book and paper included, a large number of excellent supplementary passages could be made. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of North and South America, From Its Discovery to the Death of General Washington, Vol. 1 of 2 To compose such a historical epitome scattered materials, is a difficulty of such to discourage the attempt; and to abridge an original, where there is nothing super uous, nothing the reader would wish omitted, is a design, which to many will seem to border on temerity. But this abridgement has been preferred, as it is attended with the least chance of disappoint ment; and to borrow is not dishonorable, when the obligation is candidly acknowledged. In what relates to South America, dr. Robertson's history has, therefore, been implicitly followed. His arrangement of the subject, his chronological order, and his very style have been adopted, as the best that can be chosen. To condense his details, to introduce only the most prominent and characteristic events, has been the principal effort, and invariable purpose of the epitomiser: endeavouring as he progressed, to preserve nu broken, the connexion and continuity of events; and in the A? Whole, to present the reader with a brief, but interesting view, of one of the most important aras in the annals of the world. Also, it should be borne in mind that the war began in August, 1914, and that the figures which I give would tell a still different story if it had started in January of that year.
