Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of South Texas is more racially and ethnically complex than many people realize. As a border area, South Texas has experienced some especially interesting forms of racial and ethnic intersection, influenced by the relatively small number of blacks (especially in certain counties), the function and importance of the South Texas cattle trade, proximity to Mexico, and the history of anti-black violence. The essays in African Americans in South Texas History give insight into this fascinating history. The articles in this volume, written over a span of almost three decades, were chosen for their readability, scholarship, and general interest. Contributors: Jennifer Borrer Edward Byerly Judith Kaaz Doyle Rob Fink Robert A. Goldberg Kenneth Wayne Howell Larry P. Knight Rebecca A. Kosary David Louzon Sarah R. Massey Jeanette Nyda Mendelssohn Passty Janice L. Sumler-Edmond Cary D. Wintz Rue Wood " . . . a valuable addition to the literature chronicling the black experience in the land of the Lone Star. While previous studies have concentrated on regions most reflective of Dixie origins, this collection examines the tri-ethnic area of Texas adjoining Mexico wherein cotton was scarce and cattle plentiful. Glasrud has assembled an excellent group of essays from which readers will learn much."-L. Patrick Hughes, professor of history, Austin Community College

Book excerpt: Established in 1913, Jefferson County has a rich and varied history, spanning more time and growth than this date might suggest. The area was first a hunting ground for the Shoshone and Bannock tribes, then a range for hundreds of sheep and cattle. After the Utah-Northern Railroad arrived in 1879, word quickly spread of the region's fertile soil and plentiful water. While Jefferson County became an agricultural hub through unprecedented irrigation developments, it also nourished the minds of children; several famous innovators, scientists, and authors call Jefferson County home. This volume is based on church records, family and community histories, newspaper articles, government records, and oral histories, reflecting the forces that brought the county together in 1913 and its continuing growth and change.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like many pioneer western cattlemen, Ed C. Lasater was confident, optimistic, and an aggressive user of bank credit. This history of the South Texas rancher and dairyman paints a vivid picture of frontier agriculture in an era that featured some of the region and the nation's most progressive and most trying times. Lasater, born near Goliad in 1860, purchased extensive landholdings in South Texas in the late nineteenth century. In 1904 he founded the town of Falfurrias. The author, a grandson of Ed C. Lasater, describes the settlers' arrival near the Loma Blanca, the area's principal landmark, and the pioneering efforts of the families who moved to the developing region. Falfurrias describes not only the development of Lasater's agricultural interests, which included the world's largest herd of Jersey milk cows and a creamery whose brand-name butter is still sold in the region today. Lasater was also active in politics, combating the early signs of "bossism" in South Texas counties. He ran for governor on the Progressive ticket in 1912, and served as an appointee in the U.S. Food Administration in 1917.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first volume of the first biography of Abraham Joshua Heschel, one of the outstanding Jewish thinkers of the twentieth century. Edward K. Kaplan and Samuel H. Dresner trace Heschel's life from his birth in Warsaw in 1907 to his emigration to the United States in 1940, describing his roots in Hasidic culture, his experiences in Poland and Germany, and his relations with Martin Buber. "This first volume of a remarkable biography of one of the greatest Jewish thinkers and social activists of his generation must take its place in every home, in every library, Jewish and gentile alike. Written with warmth, passion, and grace, it offers the reader an insight into the man Heschel, whose teaching has uniquely influenced modern theology and inspired moral commitment."--Elie Wiesel "This book is simply stunning! . . . The authors . . . have a profound understanding of Heschel's inner life, and they use all this information in order to craft a powerful portrait of a human being."--Jack Riemer, Commonweal "Th[is] long-awaited biography of Heschel cover[s] the author's youth in Warsaw and education in Vilna and Berlin. . . . Kaplan and Dresner's biography will hold broad popular interest while providing academics an important starting point from which to investigate critically the life and thought of this important thinker."--Zachary Braiterman, Religious Studies Review "Critical, careful attention [is paid] to Heschel's words."--Laurie Adlerstein, New York Times Book Review

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Publishers Weekly Best Book One of the New York Public Library's "25 Books to Remember" for 1999 Lavishly illustrated and meticulously researched, filled with fascinating facts and astonishing descriptions of animal behavior, Bruce Bagemihl's Biological Exuberance is a landmark book that will change forever how we look at nature. Homosexuality in its myriad forms has been scientifically documented in more than 450 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, insects, and other animals worldwide. Biological Exuberance is the first comprehensive account of the subject, bringing together accurate, accessible, and nonsensationalized information. Drawing upon a rich body of zoological research spanning more than two centuries, Bagemihl shows that animals engage in all types of nonreproductive sexual behavior. Sexual and gender expression in the animal world displays exuberant variety, including same-sex courtship, pair-bonding, sex, and co-parenting—even instances of lifelong homosexual bonding in species that do not have lifelong heterosexual bonding. Part 1, "A Polysexual, Polygendered World," begins with a survey of homosexuality, transgender, and nonreproductive heterosexuality in animals and then delves into the broader implications of these findings, including a valuable perspective on human diversity. Bagemihl also examines the hidden assumptions behind the way biologists look at natural systems and suggests a fresh perspective based on the synthesis of contemporary scientific insights with traditional knowledge from indigenous cultures. Part 2, "A Wondrous Bestiary," profiles more than 190 species in which scientific observers have noted homosexual or transgender behavior. Each profile is a verbal and visual "snapshot" of one or more closely related bird or mammal species, containing all the documentation required to support the author's often controversial conclusions.

Lacking annotation, the bibliography attempts to gather all published work about medical events or persons from Canada, including the former New France, British North America, and the territories of the Hudson's Bay Colony. This meticulously researched portrait reveals much about Australia at war and peace in the first half of the 20th century.
