Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bi-Centennial Celebration: Of the First Congregational Church and Society of Bridgeport, June 12th and 13th, 1895 The First Church and Society of Bridgeport - originally the Parish of Stratfield - looked forward to the two-hundredth anniversary of its organization for some years previous with increasing interest. The celebration was carefully planned and most successfully carried out. The decorations of the church were extremely effective; the weather was perfect; the attendance of interested and sympathetic audiences was from beginning to end as great as could be accommodated; the music - rendered by the combined choirs of the First, the Second, the Park Street Congregational Churches, and the Presbyterian Church - was admirable; in short, the occasion seemed to those most concerned to be a delightful one in every particular. It appeared desirable to preserve a permanent record of it. As far as practicable, to do this is the purpose of the present volume. One feature of the celebration was of necessity an incident of the occasion only. By dint of much research and labor, and the contribution of many willing hands, a remarkable loan-collection of relics was gathered and exhibited in the Chapel. The Committee take this opportunity of tendering their hearty thanks to all who lent their aid toward this most valuable and interesting illustration of the history which the celebration commemorated. The proceedings in the several services were stenographically reported by Mr. F. G. Fowler. The lists of members have been compiled by the sub-committee constituted for the purpose - among whom it is not invidious to name Mr. Richard B. Cogswell. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Description: The centennial celebrations of the Edinburgh 1910 conference offered Christians of all stripes multiple opportunities to reflect on the past century of mission. Over the course of the twentieth century one of the stories of the church that has moved towards center stage is the growth of evangelicalism around the world. While certainly until the late 1980s this went largely unnoticed among the academic elite of the world, even so by then the vast majority of the missionaries serving to and from every corner of the globe were framed in some way by this evangelical surge. As we reflect on the past century, then, the stories of the evangelical world church deserve to be heard. Endorsements: ""This extraordinary compendium documents and illustrates the movement from what Edinburgh 1910 designated as 'unoccupied fields' to what R. Winter strategically designated as 'unreached people groups' thus repioneering frontier missiology focused on 'finishing the task.'"" Peter Kuzmic ""This important volume demonstrates that, 100 years after the World Missionary Conference in Edinburgh, Evangelicalism has become truly global. Twenty-first-century Evangelicalism continues to focus on frontier mission, but significantly, and in the spirit of Edinburgh 1910, it also has re-engaged social action. Pentecostalism exhibits a similar direction, and these characteristics (global reach, frontier focus, social engagement) point to a vibrant future for both movements. At the same time, however, the essays in this volume present a cautionary tale of overstating goals and plans as they relate to proclamation and development."" Todd Johnson, Associate Professor of Global Christianity, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary About the Contributor(s): Beth Snodderly is President of William Carey International University in Pasadena, California, Vice President of the Southwest Region of the Evangelical Missiological Society, and became editor of the World Christian Foundations degree study program following the death of Ralph D. Winter. Scott Moreau is Professor of Intercultural Studies and Missions at Wheaton College. He is Editor of Evangelical Missions quarterly and General Editor of the Encountering Mission Series. He has written or edited more than a dozen books and numerous articles in journals, magazines, dictionaries and Web sites.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theology disconnected from mission is not Christian theology at all. The pastors, professors, and missionaries writing Theology and Practice of Mission provide a clear biblical-theological framework for understanding the church's mission to the nations. Toward that goal, the book holds three major sections: God's mission, the church's mission, and the church's mission to the nations. Part one explores the canon of Christian Scripture from narrative and systematic angles, explaining how the mission of God-to redeem a people who will be a kingdom of priests to the praise of his glory, bear witness to his gospel, advance his church, and dwell with him forever on a new heaven and earth-is communicated in the Bible's four movements: Creation, Fall, Redemption, and Restoration. Part two sees the mission of God's people in the light of God's mission, emphasizing not only preaching and church planting but also gospel witness in every dimension of human culture-glorifying God in family, church, work, community, through the arts, sciences, education, business, and the public square. The writers encourage us to live missionally, leaving all of our resources at God's disposal for the sake of his kingdom. Finally, part three contends that the North American church must come to terms with its missional calling-just as international missionaries do-and gives a starting point and parameters for conceiving the church's mission to all people groups and cultural contexts. Chapters here include ones on unreached people groups, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, and Postmoderns.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Place is fundamental to human existence. However, we have lost the very human sense of place in today's postmodern and globalized world. Craig Bartholomew, a noted Old Testament scholar and the coauthor of two popular texts on the biblical narrative, provides a biblical, theological, and philosophical grounding for place in our rootless culture. He illuminates the importance of place throughout the biblical canon, in the Christian tradition, and in the contours of contemporary thought. Bartholomew encourages readers to recover a sense of place and articulates a hopeful Christian vision of placemaking in today's world. Anyone interested in place and related environmental themes, including readers of Wendell Berry, will enjoy this compelling book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past, changes in behavior and in belief have been leading indicators for missionaries that Christian conversion had occurred. But these alone--or even together--are insufficient for a gospel understanding of conversion. For effective biblical mission, Paul G. Hiebert argues, we must add a third element: a change in worldview. Here he offers a comprehensive study of worldview--its philosophy, its history, its characteristics, and the means for understanding it. He then provides a detailed analysis of several worldviews that missionaries must engage today, addressing the impact of each on Christianity and mission. A biblical worldview is outlined for comparison. Finally, Hiebert argues for gospel ministry that seeks to transform people's worldviews and offers suggestions for how to do so.

Clark’s novel broke new ground in his telling of the story of the rites of passage of a boy, Tim Hazard, into adulthood in the setting of the Western town of Reno, Nevada. The descriptions of Reno’s landscape and the realistic characters depict the role of nature during the tumultuous stages of adolescence and the potential risk of obstruction and loss in the attainment of maturity.
