Book excerpt: When H. P. Blavatsky, the controversial head of the turn of the century movement Theosophy, defined "a true Theosophist" in her book The Key to Theosophy, she could have just as easily have been describing W. B. Yeats. Blavatsky writes, "A true Theosophist must put in practice the loftiest moral ideal, must strive to realize his unity with the whole of humanity, and work ceaselessly for others." Although Yeats joined Blavatsky's group in 1887, and subsequently left to help form The Golden Dawn in 1890, Yeats's career as poet and politician were very much in line with the methods set forth by Blavatsky's doctrine. My project explores how Yeats employs this pop-culture occultism in the creation of his own national literary aesthetic. This project not only examines the influence theosophy has on the literary work Yeats produced in the late 1880's and 1890's, but also Yeats's work as literary critic and anthology editor during that time. While Yeats uses theosophy's metaphysical world view to provide an underlying structure for some of his earliest poetry and drama, he uses theosophy's methods of investigation and argument to discover a metaphysical literary tradition which incorporates all of his own literary heroes into an Irish cultural tradition. Theosophy provides a methodology for Yeats to argue that both Shelley and Blake (for example) are part of a tradition that includes himself. Basing his argument in theosophy, Yeats can argue that the Irish people are a distinct race with a culture more "sincere" and "natural" than that of England.

Book excerpt: "The Morrigan is Pagan Ireland's dark goddess. Her name is translated as "phantom queen" or "great queen." The Morrigan is a goddess of war and sexuality, witchcraft and death, protection and retribution. This goddess of justice is classified among the Sidhe-Ireland's fairies-but she may have a mermaid incarnation, as well. The Morrigan dates back at least to Ireland's Iron Age, but she is as modern as she is ancient. With the possible exception of the witch goddess Hekate, the Morrigan is currently the most popular Pagan goddess. This book provides a guide to this complex, mysterious goddess that encompasses practical veneration with modern devotionals, entwined with traditional lore and Irish-Celtic history"--

Book excerpt: The book takes as its point of departure the notion that a nation's music and performance culture was, in the nineteenth century, conceived of as the voice of its people. From ballads to parades to plays to orations, these cultural forms carried the burden of staging an identity for the national community and for the onlooking eyes of outsiders.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Myths and Legends of the Celts is a fascinating and wide-ranging introduction to the mythology of the peoples who inhabited the northwestern fringes of Europe - from Britain and the Isle of Man to Gaul and Brittany. Drawing on recent historical and archaeological research, as well as literary and oral sources, the guide looks at the gods and goddesses of Celtic myth; at the nature of Celtic religion, with its rituals of sun and moon worship; and at the druids who served society as judges, diviners and philosophers. It also examines the many Celtic deities who were linked with animals and such natural phenomena as rivers and caves, or who later became associated with local Christian saints. And it explores in detail the rich variety of Celtic myths: from early legends of King Arthur to the stories of the Welsh Mabinogi, and from tales of heroes including CĂșchulainn, Fionn mac Cumhaill and the warrior queen Medb to tales of shadowy otherworlds - the homes of spirits and fairies. What emerges is a wonderfully diverse and fertile tradition of myth making that has captured the imagination of countless generations, introduced and explained here with compelling insight.

Book excerpt: This book is the result of extensive research to find out why Celtic FC has been involved in testimonial and other benefit matches possibly more than any other football club in the world. By interviewing fans and players past and present, the authors uncover many reasons behind the popularity of these matches. They also examine the changing nature of the benefit game; they ask fans how they feel now that these matches sometimes simply swell the bank balance of millionaire players. Also included are fans' memories, both amusing and sometimes poignant of testimonial matches they have seen - most notable for behaviour both on and off the pitch. Chapter 1 The Benefit Game Chapter 2 Old Renton v Celtic Chapter 3 A Hunger for Games Chapter 4 No Sleeping Giant Chapter 5 Between the Wars Chapter 6 1940s Chapter 7 The 1950s Chapter 8 The 1960s Chapter 9 The 1970s Chapter 10 The 1980s Chapter 11 The 1990s Chapter 12 The 2000s Chapter 13 All in the Benefit Game?
