Book Synopsis The Neuroendocrine Immune Network by : S. Freier
Download or read book The Neuroendocrine Immune Network written by S. Freier and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This informative publication updates the study of interaction of the nervous and endocrine systems with the immune system in the body. It describes the anatomical basis of these interactions, reviewing the innervation of lymphoid tissue and mast cells. The book discusses the effect of the endocrine system on immune function, including the relation of sex to the immune response. Emphasis is given to opioids, substance P, neurotensin, vasoactive intestinal peptide, somatostatin and cholecystokinin. Also addressed is the immunoregulatory effect of leukotrienes and platelet-activating factors. Scrutinized within are stress as an aspect of neuro-immune interactions, and the central role of the hypothalamus in this context. The book reviews the eye and the gastrointestinal tract with respect to the coordination of the nervous, endocrine, and immune systems in serving these organs. This work is of particular value to those in immunology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, and developmental biology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is the first book to provide a comprehensive overview of the clinical, pathological, and research aspects of motor neuron disease (MND). The text contains all essential features of the anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and toxicology of the motor system, a full description of MND and its variants, as well as historical developments and a review of the current concepts and controversies. This book comes at a time of increasing interest in neurodegenerative disorders and MND in particular. It will prove a key reference book with an integrated overview of the field, and will be indispensable to practicing neurologists, researchers, and all those with an interest in MND.
Book Synopsis Motor Neuron Disease Research Progress by : Raffaele L. Mancini
Download or read book Motor Neuron Disease Research Progress written by Raffaele L. Mancini and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2008 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The motor neuron diseases (or motor neuron diseases) (MND) are a group of progressive neurological disorders that destroy motor neurons, the cells that control voluntary muscle activity such as speaking, walking, breathing, and swallowing. Neurological examination presents specific signs associated with upper and lower motor neuron degeneration. Signs of upper motor neuron damage include spasticity, brisk reflexes and the Babinski sign. Signs of lower motor neuron damage include weakness and muscle atrophy. Every muscle group in the body requires both upper and lower motor neurons to function. It is a common misconception that "upper" motor neurons control the arms, while "lower" motor neurons control the legs. The signs described above can occur in any muscle group, including the arms, legs, torso, and bulbar region. Symptoms usually present between the ages of 50-70, and include progressive weakness, muscle wasting, and muscle fasciculations; spasticity or stiffness in the arms and legs; and overactive tendon reflexes. Patients may present with symptoms as diverse as a dragging foot, unilateral muscle wasting in the hands, or slurred speech. This new book presents the latest research from around the globe.

Book Synopsis Trends in Neuroimmunology: cross-talk between brain-resident and peripheral immune cells in both health and disease by : Estela Maris Muñoz
Download or read book Trends in Neuroimmunology: cross-talk between brain-resident and peripheral immune cells in both health and disease written by Estela Maris Muñoz and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-06-26 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The functional anatomy of organisms is maintained by the coordination of different systems, that often rely on particular interactions between specialized cells and between macromolecules. The immune system works with the circulatory and the lymphatic systems to protect most of the organs. However, some organs are considered immune privileged due to the presence of highly selective and regulated barriers, such as the blood-brain barrier (BBB) within the brain. The BBB controls periphery-brain molecule exchange and prevents immune effector cells from entering the homeostatic brain. BBB-associated elements, such as endothelial cells, pericytes, astrocytes, and microglia, potentially can function as antigen-presenting cells (APC). Pathological scenarios that induce dysfunction of the BBB and its associated cells may lead to the infiltration of lymphocytes crossing over from the blood to brain. Similarly, traumas can also enable B and T lymphocytes to pass bidirectionally between the CNS and the periphery, via the meningeal lymphatic vessels which drain into the cervical lymph nodes. Research in animals and in humans has revealed that B and T cells are involved in the progression of neurological diseases. It has been showed that under particular conditions, T cells establish themselves and become resident in the brain (T RM cells), from where they can either exert beneficial or detrimental effects on brain function. Amazing efforts have been made to further comprehend interactions between brain-specific cells and peripheral immune cells, and especially their roles and impact on the onset, progression, and eventual resolution of diverse brain pathologies.
