Book excerpt: Methods of Cell Separation brings to the attention of researchers at all levels the variety of methods available for separating viable populations of cells. Methods are grouped into 3 categories based on the criteria of separation, namely; size or density; non-specific surface properties; and specific surface properties. The principle of each method is described together with general and, where possible, specific protocols for conducting cell separation experiments.A central theme of the book is the separation of populations of blood lymphocytes which is used as an example for each method. Methods of Cell Separation is distinguished by three powerful assets: descriptions of the majority of cell separation methods currently being used; details of the experimental procedures involved in each method; and comparisons of the different methods for separating cell populations with particular reference to blood lymphocytes. An excellent addition to a distinguished series, and extremely useful as a laboratory manual.

Book excerpt: Cell Separation: Methods and Selected Applications, Volume 5 provides information pertinent to the design and application of methods for the separation of cells. This book covers a variety of topics, including endothelial cells, separation of lymphoid cells, separation of T lymphocytes, and methods of epidermal separation. Organized into 16 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the role of endothelium in wound healing and neovascularization as well as in the pathogenesis of many disease states. This text then examines a method of cell separation, isokinetic sedimentation, which can be employed to concentrate and purify one type of cell from a single-cell suspension of disaggregated tissues or organs. Other chapters consider the nature of tumor cell heterogeneity. This book discusses as well the cellular properties essential in malignant tumor behavior. The final chapter deals with transplantable pancreatic acinar cell carcinoma. This book is a valuable resource for cell biologists, experimental oncologists, hematologists, immunologists, and endocrinologists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The manipulation of cells and microparticles within microfluidic systems using external forces is valuable for many microscale analytical and bioanalytical applications. Acoustofluidics is the ultrasound-based external forcing of microparticles with microfluidic systems. It has gained much interest because it allows for the simple label-free separation of microparticles based on their mechanical properties without affecting the microparticles themselves. Microscale Acoustofluidics provides an introduction to the field providing the background to the fundamental physics including chapters on governing equations in microfluidics and perturbation theory and ultrasound resonances, acoustic radiation force on small particles, continuum mechanics for ultrasonic particle manipulation, and piezoelectricity and application to the excitation of acoustic fields for ultrasonic particle manipulation. The book also provides information on the design and characterization of ultrasonic particle manipulation devices as well as applications in acoustic trapping and immunoassays. Written by leading experts in the field, the book will appeal to postgraduate students and researchers interested in microfluidics and lab-on-a-chip applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past 6 years since the first edition of this book have seen great progress in the development of genetically engineered mouse (GEM) models of cancer. These models are finding an important role in furthering our understanding of the biology of malignant disease. A comfortable position for GEM models in the routine conduct of screening for potential new therapeutics is coming more slowly but is coming. Increasing numbers of genetically engineered mice are available, some with conditional activation of oncogenes, some with multiple genetic changes providing mouse models that are moving closer to the human disease.

Book excerpt: This book presents a summary of the application and instrumentation of cell electrophoresis. The method of making cell purification and characterization possible according to the cellular negative surface charge density is discussed, and ideas for future developments are explained. The negative electrostatic forces at cell surfaces provide information about cell-cell interaction, blood vessel sealing, cytokine actions, cell transformation, ion transport phenomena, and other biological phenomena. Recalculations of the physical principles of cell electrophoresis reveal possibilities for removing disruptive factors caused by electrical current, heat, and sedimentation. The introduction of computer technology, the performance of simultaneous two-parameter measurements, and the application of cell-friendly but current-inert buffer systems render the method more reliable and efficient.

Book excerpt: Rapid advances have taken place in various aspects of reproductive biology during the last decade. These advances have centered around several organ systems that comprise the reproductive system and encompass molecular events and structure-function relationships. It becomes important to review these advances in knowledge, at periodic intervals, with respect to feedback systems and regulatory loops that control reproductive processes in vivo. Towards this end, a workshop entitled "Functional Correlates of Hormone Receptors in Reproduction" sponsored by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development and the Reproductive Biology Study Section of the Division of Research Grants, National Institutes of Health was held in October 1980. The proceedings of the workshop were published by Elsevier Biomedical/New York. This workshop was followed by two workshops sponsored by the Reproductive Biology Study Section of the Division of Research Grants, National Institutes of Health entitled "Role of Peptides and Proteins in Control of Reproduction" in February 1982 and published by Elsevier Biomedical and "Molecular and Cellular Aspects of Reproduction" in October 1985 and published by Plenum Press. It was, therefore, timely to review the current state of knowledge regarding the regulation of ovarian and testicular function by bringing together scientists working in separate and discrete aspects of reproduction to review the functional implications of their research on the regulation of function within the same tissue and also in relationship to feedback systems and regulatory loops with other tissues.

Book excerpt: Diseases of the kidney, bladder, and prostate exact an enormous human and economic toll on the population of the United States. This book examines prevention of these diseases through the development of reliable markers of susceptibility, exposure, and effect and the promise that new technologies in molecular biology and sophisticated understanding of metabolic pathways, along with classical approaches to the study of nephrotoxicants and carcinogens, can be developed and prevention of the diseases achieved. The specific recommendations included in this book complement those made in the previous three volumes on biomarkers, Biologic Markers in Reproductive Toxicology (1989), Biologic Markers in Pulmonary Toxicology (1989), and Biologic Markers in Immunotoxicology (1991).
