Book excerpt: 2016 Ontario Historical Society Donald Grant Creighton Award — Winner A National Post Bestseller, The Hill Times: Best Books of 2016, 2016 Speaker's Book Award — Shortlisted The first authorized biography of Bill Davis, the enigmatic Ontario premier who carried on a Tory dynasty, but was also a crucial Trudeau supporter. A biography of one of Ontario’s most important premiers, who, despite having been out of public life for more than thirty years, is remembered fondly by many as the father of the community college system, TVO, OISE, and was indispensable in repatriating the Canadian Constitution with an accompanying Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Before he became premier, Davis was perhaps the most important education minister in Ontario history, responsible for the creation of the community college system and TVOntario. As premier, he went on to lead Ontario through buoyant and recessionary economic times, leaving a legacy Ontarians continue to enjoy. Now 87, Davis still lives on Main Street in his beloved Brampton.

Book excerpt: The head and neck, as an anatomical cross roads of multiple functions critical to human well being, including respiration, digestion, sensation, communication, and aesthetics, presents disorders that acutely threaten these vital systems. As with any emergency situation, information devoted to the priorities of management: airway, breathing, circulation, and disability are presented for otolaryngic emergencies that may manifest at each of these levels in the form of acute airway obstruction, epistaxis, and the gamut of traumatic, infectious, and inflammatory disorders that affect special sensation, neurologic function, and cosmesis. Discussed in this issue is the use of modalities such as endoscopy, optics, and radiologic imaging as a means to earlier diagnosis, detailed anatomic assessment, and minimally invasive surgery used in the emergency setting. This text strives to keep practitioners at the forefront in the management of ENT emergencies. Experts in otolaryngology describe those conditions that require urgent evaluation and treatment but are also relatively common. Where evidence-based medicine is lacking, comprehensive reviews of the controversies are presented along with logical treatment algorithms based on clinical expertise. This issue of Otolaryngologic Clinics should be highly relevant to the otolaryngologist as well as the general practitioner and emergency physician.

Book excerpt: After the unexpected death of their parents, two second-generation Italian Canadian brothers must come together to decide whether to hold on to the family home, which is full of secrets and hoarded junk, or save what's left of their strained relationship. When Anthony, an uptight lawyer running for office, arrives with his former actor turned campaign manager wife Cristina, they're set on signing away the house and everything that comes with it. But Enzo, a disorganized plumber, and his much younger, pregnant girlfriend Nat have other plans. The pleasantries quickly turn to tense deliberations that unearth dramatically differing views of the group's past experiences and present values. This clever family dramedy takes a close look at issues that affect modern second-generation immigrant families in Canada--class differences, antiquated old-world beliefs, and a crumbling Canadian dream.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that modelling should be a component of all school curricula that aspire to provide ‘authentic science education for all’. The literature on modelling is reviewed and a ‘model of modelling’ is proposed. The conditions for the successful implementation of the ‘model of modelling’ in classrooms are explored and illustrated from practical experience. The roles of argumentation, visualisation, and analogical reasoning, in successful modelling-based teaching are reviewed. The contribution of such teaching to both the learning of key scientific concepts and an understanding of the nature of science are established. Approaches to the design of curricula that facilitate the progressive grasp of the knowledge and skills entailed in modelling are outlined. Recognising that the approach will both represent a substantial change from the ‘content-transmission’ approach to science teaching and be in accordance with current best-practice in science education, the design of suitable approaches to teacher education are discussed. Finally, the challenges that modelling-based education pose to science education researchers, advanced students of science education and curriculum design, teacher educators, public examiners, and textbook designers, are all outlined.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is increasing rapidly worldwide and it's predicted that by 2020 it will represent the third leading cause of death. Sadly, this slow-progressing debilitating disease not only affects the individual but also has consequences for the family. More positively, the urgent need to improve the care offered and to raise the public profile of the condition has now been recognised. Healthcare providers play a central role in this, through health education, early diagnosis and better management through all stages of the disease. Managing Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease provides an insight into this debilitative condition. The book aims to develop nurses' and allied health professionals' knowledge and skills in caring for individuals with COPD. It takes the reader on a journey from diagnosis through to end-of-life care and examines: Initial diagnosis and symptom management Smoking cessation Pulmonary rehabilitation The management of acute episodes The role of each member of the multi-disciplinary team Quality of life, including nutrition, fatigue management and leisure activities The future for the care and management of people with the condition. Healthcare professionals from multi-disciplinary teams have contributed to this book to demonstrate that a co-ordinated approach for these patients is required across both primary and secondary care. Managing Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease can be utilised by nurses and allied health professionals caring for patients at all stages of their disease.

Book excerpt: For more than two centuries, Americans have used words of sentiment and sympathy, passion and power to explain their country's unique democratic mission. Here Andrew Burstein examines the emotional dynamic and the metaphorically rich language which Americans developed to express their guiding principle: that the New World would improve upon the Old. "Feeling," he argues, was a political and cultural phenomenon, and in the impassioned rhetoric of "feeling" we can locate the sources of American patriotism. Using newspapers and magazines, private letters and public speeches, diaries and books, Burstein shows how the eighteenth-century "culture of sensibility" encouraged early Americans to make a heartfelt commitment to the Enlightenment's optimism about a global society; it would succeed, they believed, as much by sublime feeling as by intellectual achievement and political liberty. "Sentimental Democracy" gives us a lively dual portrait of the American psyche and the American dream -- telling us as much about ourselves as about our morally passionate ancestors. -- From publisher's description.
