Book excerpt: CDM REGULATIONS CDM REGULATIONS 2015 PROCEDURES MANUAL The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations (CDM Regulations) initially came into force on 31 March 1995 to promote an integrated, holistic approach to the consideration of health and safety issues associated with all aspects of construction projects. The Regulations were updated in 2007, with the current version coming into force on 6 April 2015. The Regulations require all those involved in construction to adopt a team-based approach to health and safety, to be delivered through dutyholder responsibilities via project team risk management, accountability and effective, timely communication. The CDM Regulations 2015 Procedures Manual articulates and explains the statutory duties, and provides a documentation system to ensure associated compliance. It has been thoroughly revised to take account of the amendments to the CDM Regulations brought about by the 2015 update, which requires both subtle and significant changes in the management of health and safety within the construction industry.

Book excerpt: The Construction Design and Management [CDM) Regulations came into force on March 31, 1995. These regulations require clients, designers and contractors to take into account health, safety and environmental issues throughout the complete lifecycle of a building or plant--including the initial site works, construction, commissioning, operation, maintenance and demolition stages. The regulations have caused considerable concern in the construction industry and among major engineering clients because their obligations are seen as extremely onerous. Such examples include the preparation of a Health and Safety Plan and the maintenance of a Health and Safety File detailing design criteria and the construction process. This manual, prepared originally for use on PowerGen's own projects, ensures that design risks to personnel and to the environment can be identified and that measures can be taken to eliminate or mitigate those hazards. It can also form not only the basis of the Health and Safety Plan and Health and Safety File required by the CDM Regulations, but also an auditable record for quality-assurance purposes. Additionally, an electronic edition of The CDM Regulations has also been issued, which contains the entire content of the printed edition. The text and tables are connected to powerful navigation facilities to help the user locate a passage quickly and effortlessly. Using the electronic edition will help the user to keep track of all the important safety data on an engineering project. Finally, this product is Y2K compliant.

Itseeks to improve the long term health and safety performance of theUK construction industry, with ownership of health and safetyproactively undertaken by the integrated project team. Good design has always embraced health and safety issues anddesign teams remain essential players as well as key contributorsand communicators in matters of health and safety management.Designers have a legal responsibility to ensure that their designsaccount for health and safety at all stages within the holisticenvelope of construction. Design Risk Management: Contribution to Health and Safetygives detailed guidance to construction practitioners with designresponsibility on how to identify and manage health and safetyrisks, and on the design strategies to be followed. It seeks tofocus on accountability with due emphasis on the minimisation ofunnecessary bureaucracy and offers documentation trails thatprovide an insight to managing risk and not paperwork. Subsequentlyit offers a process by which designers can discharge their dutiesin compliance with the CDM Regulations.

Book excerpt: This book offers a clear explanation of the principles and practice of construction planning, programming and control during the preparation and construction stages of a project. The book is written in the context of current procurement and contractual arrangements and JCT2005, NEC3 and ICE7 contracts are covered. The statutory framework within which construction projects must be managed is explained and the topic of construction hazard and risk is covered in detail. A variety of programming techniques are explained and the development of safe construction sequences and methods is particularly emphasised. The control of time, money and resources are considered in a risk management context and a complete chapter is devoted to cash flow. The third edition has been extensively updated and extended to include new materials on: Hazard identification Risk assessment Health and safety management CDM 2007 Construction sequences and method statements Delay analysis Waste management and Site Waste Management Plans The final three chapters are devoted to individual case studies which have been selected to illustrate the practical application of the principles explained in the book and to provide examples of current procedures adopted by major contractors. The content is designed to provide a clear and comprehensive text for undergraduates on construction management, surveying and civil engineering degree courses.

Book excerpt: view, showing that multiple molecular pathways must be affected for cancer to develop, but with different specific proteins in each pathway mutated or differentially expressed in a given tumor (The Cancer Genome Atlas Research Network 2008; Parsons et al. 2008). Different studies demonstrated that while widespread mutations exist in cancer, not all mutations drive cancer development (Lin et al. 2007). This suggests a need to target only a deleterious subset of aberrant proteins, since any tre- ment must aim to improve health to justify its potential side effects. Treatment for cancer must become highly individualized, focusing on the specific aberrant driver proteins in an individual. This drives a need for informatics in cancer far beyond the need in other diseases. For instance, routine treatment with statins has become widespread for minimizing heart disease, with most patients responding to standard doses (Wilt et al. 2004). In contrast, standard treatment for cancer must become tailored to the molecular phenotype of an individual tumor, with each patient receiving a different combination of therapeutics aimed at the specific aberrant proteins driving the cancer. Tracking the aberrations that drive cancers, identifying biomarkers unique to each individual for molecular-level di- nosis and treatment response, monitoring adverse events and complex dosing schedules, and providing annotated molecular data for ongoing research to improve treatments comprise a major biomedical informatics need.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Architect in Practice was first published in 1952. Originally written by a quantity surveyor and an architect it has remained, through its nine editions, a leading textbook used in the education of architects world-wide. While the format of the book has developed, the message and philosophy remains the same as the original: to provide the student of architecture and the young practitioner with a readable guide to the profession, outlining an architect's duties to client and contractor, the key aspects of running a building contract, and the essentials of management, finance and drawing office procedure. The tenth edition follows in that tradition. The authors, still an architect and a quantity surveyor, have brought the text fully up to date. Major revisions in this edition include: Revised sections on Planning and the Building Regulations Changes to the education of architects in the UK have been detailed Discussion of the new ARB Architects Code: Standards of Professional Conduct and Practice which came into force in January 2010 The commentary on the RIBA Standard Form for the Appointment of an Architect 1999 (SFA/99) has been updated The latest RIBA Standard Agreement 2010 (S-10-A) is now discussed All references to JCT contracts have been updated to refer to the latest revisions of the 2005 suite of contracts Now also includes reference to education, registration and CPD requirements of the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland The tenth edition of The Architect in Practice will continue to provide the guidance and advice all students and practising architects need in the course of their studies and in their profession.
