Book excerpt: The Journal of Safety Research (JSR) is pleased to publish several papers from CDC's National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC) on occasion of their 20th anniversary. The mission of the NCIPC, "to reduce morbidity, disability, and mortality..." in non-occupational settings, is consonant with the National Safety Council's (JSR's host organization) mission to "save lives by preventing injuries and deaths at work, in our homes and communities, and on the road..." So it is a natural fit for JSR to provide a publication home for several important NCIPC papers that examine and celebrate the agency's origins, innovations, and aspirations, both looking back and forward. The papers included in this special issue of JSR address a wide range of conceptual, methodological, and applied themes within the field of injury prevention and control, domestically and globally. They cover such topics as risk and countermeasure identification, public health policy development, safety science rigor, community-based implementation and evaluation, socio-ecological modeling, and impending areas of concern for injury and violence prevention. The papers for this issue were selected through an internal peer review process within NCIPC.
