Download or read book Casablanca written by Paul Puschmann and published by ACCO. This book was released on 2011 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A century ago, the modern metropolis of Casablanca, which today houses some three million inhabitants, was a small and unimportant coastal settlement. At that time, the Medina of Dar el Beida -- as Moroccans often call the city -- had only about 25,000 inhabitants. However, the arrival of the French changed Casablanca's destiny forever. Foreign investment and the construction of a large artificial ocean port transformed Dar el Beida swiftly into the new economic heart of Morocco. Like many other cities in the developing world, Dar el Beida attracted many times more migrants than it had jobs to offer. Consequently, unemployment increased and slums sprang up across the city. These ominous developments, however, did not stop hundreds of thousands of new immigrants arriving over the last century. As such, social disaster became inevitable. The author of this book explores the causes and consequences of persistent massive rural-to-urban migration to Dar el Beida during the twentieth century.
Book Synopsis The Speed of Change by : Jan-Bart Gewald
Download or read book The Speed of Change written by Jan-Bart Gewald and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009-07-31 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1900s the motor-vehicle (car, bus, lorry or motor-cycle) was introduced in sub-Saharan Africa. Initially the plaything and symbol of colonial domination, the motor-vehicle transformed the economic and social life of the continent. Indeed, the motor-vehicle is arguably the single most important factor for change in Africa in the twentieth century. A factor for change that thus far has been neglected in research and literature. Yet its impact extends across the totality of human existence; from ecological devastation to economic advancement, from cultural transformation to political change, through to a myriad of other themes. This edited volume of eleven contributions by historians, anthropologists and social and political scientists explores aspects of the social history and anthropology of the motor-vehicle in Africa.
Book Synopsis Constructivist Education in an Age of Accountability by : David W. Kritt
Download or read book Constructivist Education in an Age of Accountability written by David W. Kritt and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-01-16 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contrasts authentic approaches to education with classroom practices based primarily on standards external to the individuals who are supposed to learn. While other books tend to promote either a desperate scramble for meeting standards or determined resistance to neoliberal reforms, this book fills that gap in ways that will inspire practitioners, prospective teachers, and teacher educators. Mandates pay only lip service to constructivist and social constructivist principles while thwarting the value of both students and teachers actively creating understandings. Authors in this book assert the central importance of a range of constructivist approaches to teaching, learning, and thinking, inviting careful reflection on the goals and values of education.
