Book Synopsis The Large Scale Structure of Space-Time by : S. W. Hawking
Download or read book The Large Scale Structure of Space-Time written by S. W. Hawking and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1975-02-27 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Einstein's General Theory of Relativity leads to two remarkable predictions: first, that the ultimate destiny of many massive stars is to undergo gravitational collapse and to disappear from view, leaving behind a 'black hole' in space; and secondly, that there will exist singularities in space-time itself. These singularities are places where space-time begins or ends, and the presently known laws of physics break down. They will occur inside black holes, and in the past are what might be construed as the beginning of the universe. To show how these predictions arise, the authors discuss the General Theory of Relativity in the large. Starting with a precise formulation of the theory and an account of the necessary background of differential geometry, the significance of space-time curvature is discussed and the global properties of a number of exact solutions of Einstein's field equations are examined. The theory of the causal structure of a general space-time is developed, and is used to study black holes and to prove a number of theorems establishing the inevitability of singualarities under certain conditions. A discussion of the Cauchy problem for General Relativity is also included in this 1973 book.
Book Synopsis The Oxford Handbook of Causal Reasoning by : Michael Waldmann
Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Causal Reasoning written by Michael Waldmann and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 769 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Causal reasoning is one of our most central cognitive competencies, enabling us to adapt to our world. Causal knowledge allows us to predict future events, or diagnose the causes of observed facts. We plan actions and solve problems using knowledge about cause-effect relations. Without our ability to discover and empirically test causal theories, we would not have made progress in various empirical sciences. The handbook brings together the leading researchers in the field of causal reasoning and offers state-of-the-art presentations of theories and research. It provides introductions of competing theories of causal reasoning, and discusses its role in various cognitive functions and domains. The final section presents research from neighboring fields.

Book Synopsis Space, Time and Causality by : Richard Swinburne
Download or read book Space, Time and Causality written by Richard Swinburne and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Royal Institute of Philosophy has been sponsoring conferences in alter nate years since 1969. These have from the start been intended to be of interest to persons who are not philosophers by profession. They have mainly focused on interdisciplinary areas such as the philosophies of psychology, education and the social sciences. The volumes arising from these conferences have included discussions between philosophers and distinguished practitioners of other disciplines relevant to the chosen topic. Beginning with the 1979 conference on 'Law, Morality and Rights' and the 1981 conference on 'Space, Time and Causality' these volumes are now constituted as a series. It is hoped that this series will contribute to advancing philosophical understanding at the frontiers of philosophy and areas of interest to non-philosophers. It is hoped that it will do so by writing which reduces technicalities as much as the subject-matter permits. In this way the series is intended to demonstrate that philosophy can be clear and worthwhile in itself and at the same time relevant to the interests of lay people.

Book Synopsis Global Spacetime Structure by : JB Manchak
Download or read book Global Spacetime Structure written by JB Manchak and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-12-03 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This exploration of the global structure of spacetime within the context of general relativity examines the causal and singular structures of spacetime, revealing some of the curious possibilities that are compatible with the theory, such as 'time travel' and 'holes' of various types. Investigations into the epistemic and modal structures of spacetime highlight the difficulties in ruling out such possibilities, unlikely as they may seem at first. The upshot seems to be that what counts as a 'physically reasonable' spacetime structure in modern physics is far from clear.
Book Synopsis Causal Space-Time by : Richard D. Bateson
Download or read book Causal Space-Time written by Richard D. Bateson and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2010-12-05 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Causality - the concept of cause and effect - has long been viewed by philosophers, from Aristotle to Kant, as fundamental to our understanding of the universe. In this book we construct a theory of physics based on causality. We discover that the simplest causal network, based on Reichenbach's principle of common cause, exactly describes the Dirac equation and is consistent with both special relativity and quantum mechanical statistics. Are the "elementary" particles and "fundamental" laws of physics emergent from causality? Many historical philosophers would have perhaps taken this for granted and in this book we explore these ideas. Dr. Richard Bateson is a physicist based at the London Centre for Nanotechnology (LCN), University College London (UCL). He previously worked at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF), Institut Laue Langevin (ILL) and CERN. He has a doctorate in physics from Cambridge University.

Book Synopsis Space, Time, and Spacetime by : Lawrence Sklar
Download or read book Space, Time, and Spacetime written by Lawrence Sklar and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-07-28 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Lawrence Sklar demonstrates the interdependence of science and philosophy by examining a number of crucial problems on the nature of space and time—problems that require for their resolution the resources of philosophy and of physics. The overall issues explored are our knowledge of the geometry of the world, the existence of spacetime as an entity over and above the material objects of the world, the relation between temporal order and causal order, and the problem of the direction of time. Without neglecting the most subtle philosophical points or the most advanced contributions of contemporary physics, the author has taken pains to make his explorations intelligible to the reader with no advanced training in physics, mathematics, or philosophy. The arguments are set forth step-by-step, beginning from first principles; and the philosophical discussions are supplemented in detail by nontechnical expositions of crucial features of physical theories.

Book Synopsis Understanding Space-Time by : Robert DiSalle
Download or read book Understanding Space-Time written by Robert DiSalle and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-04-27 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presenting the history of space-time physics, from Newton to Einstein, as a philosophical development DiSalle reflects our increasing understanding of the connections between ideas of space and time and our physical knowledge. He suggests that philosophy's greatest impact on physics has come about, less by the influence of philosophical hypotheses, than by the philosophical analysis of concepts of space, time and motion, and the roles they play in our assumptions about physical objects and physical measurements. This way of thinking leads to interpretations of the work of Newton and Einstein and the connections between them. It also offers ways of looking at old questions about a priori knowledge, the physical interpretation of mathematics, and the nature of conceptual change. Understanding Space-Time will interest readers in philosophy, history and philosophy of science, and physics, as well as readers interested in the relations between physics and philosophy.
