Book excerpt: Book your ticket to Magic Island, where the potions are brewed fresh daily, the beaches are perfect for creature-watching, and the fangs and fur are on full display. Long-buried secrets about the family she’s never known have come to light, leaving novice witch Wren Winters reeling. Trying to keep herself from having a nervous breakdown is no easy task, especially when she also has to contend with a duct-taped wand, a boyfriend with more than one skeleton in his closet, a close friend who’s chosen the strangest of bedfellows... and a powerful wizard who refuses to admit to the truth. When an innocent gnome is thrown in jail for a murder he didn’t commit, Wren is grateful for the distraction, and immediately throws herself head-first into the investigation. Between attending a self-defense class for small magical creatures, going on a nighttime broomstick tour of the island, and visiting a gloomy forest where rogue werewolves roam, she has plenty to keep her occupied. But as she closes in on the killer, Wren is forced to face an uncomfortable truth. Sometimes things—and people—are not what they appear to be. Author's Note: Each book includes a self-contained mystery, but there are longer, ongoing subplots that continue throughout the series.

To be buried at the public expense! To be buried at the public expense, although a Viscount in the Peerage of Ireland and the heir to a Marquisate in the Peerage of England. The pity of it, the pity that it should come to this!"

The first part of the story, The Golden Days, begins the tale of Bao-yu, a gentle young boy who prefers girls to Confucian studies, and his two cousins: Bao-chai, his parents' choice of a wife for him, and the ethereal beauty Dai-yu. Through the changing fortunes of the Jia family, this rich, magical work sets worldly events - love affairs, sibling rivalries, political intrigues, even murder - within the context of the Buddhist understanding that earthly existence is an illusion and karma determines the shape of our lives.

Book excerpt: Lynx and the rest of the Cards are heading south. There's money in their pockets, beer in their hands and a simple job ahead - sun, sea and not getting shot at much. Throw in the prospect of a bar fight and it's almost a holiday. But the volatile Mage Islands are a powder-keg, one just waiting for a spark. A bloody-handed exile perhaps, or the agent of a foreign power preparing for war. Maybe even a bunch of trigger-happy drunks who've upset the balance of magic across the Riven Kingdom. Or all three together, that'd definitely work...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My aim in this book is to bring together materials for a judgment of the change which came over Europe in the sixteenth century, to which the name of "The Reformation" is loosely given. I have attempted to do this from a strictly historical point of view,- by which I mean that I have contented myself with watching events and noting the gradual development of affairs. I have taken the history of the Papacy as the central point for my investigation, because it gives the largest opportunity for a survey of European affairs as a whole. I have not begun with the actual crisis itself, but have gone back to trace the gradual formation of opinions which were long simmering below the surface before they found actual expression. I purpose, if opportunity should be given me, to continue my survey in succeeding volumes to the dissolution of the Council of Trent.
