Book Synopsis Simulation Of Beef Cattle Production Systems And Its Use In Economic Analysis by : Thomas H Spreen
Download or read book Simulation Of Beef Cattle Production Systems And Its Use In Economic Analysis written by Thomas H Spreen and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic analysis of beef cattle production has been limited by the inability to fully describe the underlying production process. Except for confined feeding of cattle, beef cattle production is the process of growing cattle who consume forages. The animal and the forage possess attributes of both factors and products of production. The production of forage constitutes one production process, animal growth is another production process, and reproduction by female animals is a third production process. Cattle production involves all three processes in such a manner that each influences the outcome of the other. Each process is itself complex and analysis is further complicated when all three are considered simultaneously.

Download or read book The Role of Livestock in Agricultural Development written by Regina Birner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999, this study aims to develop a theoretical framework for the analysis of livestock farming systems and their conditions of change. The framework should be generally applicable in developing countries and make it possible to analyse livestock farming in different agro-ecological regions. Secondly, Regina Birner applies the framework to a case study in Sri Lanka, the ecological conditions and agrarian structure of which is an excellent setting for studying the diverse factors influencing the action and change of livestock farming. Thirdly, Birner contributes to improving the planning basis for livestock developing policies in developing countries.
Book Synopsis Cow Care in Hindu Animal Ethics by : Kenneth R. Valpey
Download or read book Cow Care in Hindu Animal Ethics written by Kenneth R. Valpey and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-02 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book provides both a broad perspective and a focused examination of cow care as a subject of widespread ethical concern in India, and increasingly in other parts of the world. In the face of what has persisted as a highly charged political issue over cow protection in India, intellectual space must be made to bring the wealth of Indian traditional ethical discourse to bear on the realities of current human-animal relationships, particularly those of humans with cows. Dharma, yoga, and bhakti paradigms serve as starting points for bringing Hindu—particularly Vaishnava Hindu—animal ethics into conversation with contemporary Western animal ethics. The author argues that a culture of bhakti—the inclusive, empathetic practice of spirituality centered in Krishna as the beloved cowherd of Vraja—can complement recently developed ethics-of-care thinking to create a solid basis for sustaining all kinds of cow care communities.
Book Synopsis Managing the Prenatal Environment to Enhance Livestock Productivity by : Paul L. Greenwood
Download or read book Managing the Prenatal Environment to Enhance Livestock Productivity written by Paul L. Greenwood and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-04-27 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prenatal life is the period of maximal development in animals, and it is well recognised that factors that alter development can have profound effects on the embryonic, fetal and postnatal animal. Scientists involved in research on livestock productivity have for decades studied postnatal consequences of fetal development on productivity. Recently, however, there has been a surge in interest in how to manage prenatal development to enhance livestock health and productivity. This has occurred largely due to the studies that show human health in later life can be influenced by events during prenatal life, and establishment of the Fetal Origins and the Thrifty Phenotype Hypotheses. This book, Managing the Prenatal Environment to Enhance Livestock Productivity reviews phenotypic consequences of prenatal development, and provides details of mechanisms that underpin these effects in ruminants, pigs and poultry. The chapters have been divided into three parts: Quantification of prenatal effects on postnatal productivity, mechanistic bases of postnatal consequences of prenatal development and regulators of fetal and neonatal nutrient supply. Managing the Prenatal Environment to Enhance Livestock Productivity is a reference from which future research to improve the level of understanding and capacity to enhance productivity, health and efficiency of livestock in developing and developed countries will evolve. It is particularly timely given the development of molecular technologies that are providing new insight into regulation and consequences of growth and development of the embryo, fetus and neonate.

Book Synopsis Regionalisation and Integration in China by : Colin G Brown
Download or read book Regionalisation and Integration in China written by Colin G Brown and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-24 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2002: Changing economic, institutional and market environments have turned the spatial inter-relationships thought to exist in China upside-down. Through an investigation of the beef industry, this text builds a picture of where regionalization and integration are heading in China. It examines the impacts of market forces, industry characteristics, relative factor endowments and government influence on the spatial organization of activities. It reveals the influence of government as priorities are re-assessed and as markets and industries develop, as well as exploring the extent of regional co-ordination and co-operation and how central and local government policies and strategies reconcile. The volume also contains regional assessments of the beef industry in 12 key producing provinces and the key consumption areas of Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong.

Book Synopsis Rangeland Desertification by : Olafur Arnalds
Download or read book Rangeland Desertification written by Olafur Arnalds and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Desertification has occurred worldwide. The biophysical and socio-economic complexity of this phenomenon has challenged our ability to categorize, inventory, monitor and repair the condition of degraded lands. One of the most important distinctions to be made in relation to land degradation is between cultivated land used for annual crop production and `rangelands'. Grazing by free-roaming livestock is the traditional primary use of the world's rangelands. However, there is growing recognition of the importance of these vast acreages for wildlife habitat, hydrology and ground water recharge, recreation and aesthetics. This text focuses on the desertification of rangelands and explores processes, problems and solutions. Chapters in the first section evaluate interactions between `natural' and human-induced disturbance regimes, thresholds, and non-linear change with respect to vegetation, hydrology, nutrients and erosion. Chapters in the second section examine socio-economic constraints and approaches for preventing and reversing degradation. The book provides a contemporary, process-oriented perspective on rangeland degradation of value to students, policy-makers and professionals alike.
