Book excerpt: Cities and Their Vital Systems asks basic questions about the longevity, utility, and nature of urban infrastructures; analyzes how they grow, interact, and change; and asks how, when, and at what cost they should be replaced. Among the topics discussed are problems arising from increasing air travel and airport congestion; the adequacy of water supplies and waste treatment; the impact of new technologies on construction; urban real estate values; and the field of "telematics," the combination of computers and telecommunications that makes money machines and national newspapers possible.

Download or read book Cathodic Protection of Concrete Bridges written by Jack E. Bennett and published by Strategic Highway Research Program (Shrp). This book was released on 1993 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document provides explanation, guidance, and direction concerning cathodic protection of concrete bridge elements to the highway engineer who wants to incorporate cathodic protection in a bridge project. The manual which provides background information on corrosion fundamentals, is divided into 3 parts: design, construction, and operation and maintenance. An appendix provides standard specifications for cathodic protection systems for both decks and substructures. The document is intended to be a useful reference for engineers who design and prepare specifications or who oversee turnkey operations.

This book was released on 1985 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conference focused on the major problem facing highway and bridge engineers: deterioration of concrete bridge decks caused by corrosion of the reinforcing steel. The conference was aimed primarily at giving bridge owners and engineers an understanding of cathodic protection as the only means to stop corrosion on bridge decks.

Book Synopsis Field Inspection Guide for Bridge Deck Cathodic Protection by :
Download or read book Field Inspection Guide for Bridge Deck Cathodic Protection written by and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This report is intended as a guide for inspectors who are unfamiliar with the construction procedures used when installing cathodic protection systems on reinforced concrete bridge decks. The text has been divided into sections in an effort to simplify the report and make it easier to locate desired information. The first four sections provide some basic background information about cathodic protection. Section V discusses a general system installation; each of the major components are discussed to provide a basic understanding and act as a checklist during the installation process. Section VI discusses the various types of systems that have been installed, to date. This is not intended to be an all-inclusive manual. Rather, it is to be used as a guide to help overcome some of the most common problems associated with the installation of cathodic protection systems. It is meant to support and supplement good specifications, not replace them"--Page 1

Download or read book Cathodic Protection for Reinforced Concrete Bridge Decks written by Donald R. Jackson (P.E.) and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Bridge decks are expected to proved relatively maintenance-free service for approximately 40 years. It has been found, however, that some unprotected bridge decks require major repairs within 5 to 10 years, and often must be replaced after 15 years of service. This premature deterioration is frequently the direct result of an accelerated corrosion process on the reinforcing steel caused by the intrusion of deicing chemicals into bridge deck surfaces. A number of bridges on the Federal-aid system do not have a protective system on their decks. If these bridge decks were protected now, significant savings could be realized by avoiding more expensive repairs later. One positive method of stopping the corrosion process in reinforced concrete bridge decks is cathodic protection. Cathodic protection (CP) has been used for many ears to control the corrosion of buried pipelines and structures in saltwater environments. During the past 8 years, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), through its Demonstration Projects Division, has promoted the use of this technology as a means of preserving existing unprotected reinforced concrete bridge decks. Assistance has been provided to requesting highway agencies for the construction and evaluation of 22 cathodic installations in conjunction with Demonstration Project No. 34, Cathodic Protection for Reinforced Concrete Bridge Decks. This report provides a summary of the information furnished by participating highway agencies; it includes project selection criteria, design considerations, construction procedures and problems, and performance criteria and results"--P. i.

Book Synopsis Installation and Operational Comparison of Five Bridge Deck Cathodic Protection Systems by : Richard A. Carello
Download or read book Installation and Operational Comparison of Five Bridge Deck Cathodic Protection Systems written by Richard A. Carello and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report compares the application and testing of the following five independent cathodic protection (CP) systems installed on three reinforced concrete bridge decks: 1) Coke Breeze; 2) Metallized Zinc; 3) Raychem "Ferex 100"; 4) Eltech "Elgard 210"; 5) Conductive Polymer. All five CP systems were installed under a single contract and work was performed by the same contractor during the summer of 1988. Construction methods, materials, and the difficulties encountered in installing each type of system are included. During the six year study period (November 1988 to November 1994), all five systems were monitored regularly. Parameters monitored were driving voltage, current density, and polarization decay. The efficiency of providing corrosion protection for each system based on these parameters is compared.
Book Synopsis Cathodic Protection for Reinforced Concrete Structures by : Paul M. Chess
Download or read book Cathodic Protection for Reinforced Concrete Structures written by Paul M. Chess and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-10-12 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cathodic protection of reinforced concrete structures is a technique for rescuing corrosion damaged structures and, in certain instances, preventing them from corroding in the first place, and its use is growing. This book is for specialist contractors, large consultants and owners of corrosion damaged structures, and looks at international experience with this technique. It examines why corrosion is occurring, the differences in the application of CP with the stark dichotomy in its success and failure, and finally ways in which its performance can be improved on future installations. Information is valuable, as the success or failure of the CP system has a marked effect on the service life of the structure.

Download or read book Cathodic Protection of Reinforced Concrete Bridge Decks written by Joshua Thomas Host and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The deteriorating conditions of reinforced concrete bridges demands new and innovative technology for the repair and rehabilitation of these bridges. The damage caused by the corrosion of steel reinforcement is a prime factor of bridge deterioration. Cathodic protection is emerging as the leading method for the protection of these damaged bridges. The recent innovation of conductive concrete has led researchers to consider using this new concrete matrix for cathodic protection. This study determines the feasibility of conductive concrete for cathodic protection. Four test slabs were cast with conventional reinforced concrete specified by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) for bridge decks. Steel electrodes were placed on these conventional concrete slabs with a conductive concrete overlay. Conductive concrete is a proprietary concrete matrix which generates an electrical charge through the overlay. Once the concrete slabs were allowed to cure, the slabs were monitored to determine the effectiveness of the conductive concrete overlay for cathodic protection.
