Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Were our forefathers liars? "You bet they were," says Roger Welsch, "and damned fine ones at that." The proof is in Catfish at the Pump, a collection of the kind of humor that softened the hardships of pioneering on the Great Plains. From yellowed newspapers, magazines, and forgotten Nebraska Federal Writers' Project files, the well-known folklorist and humorist Roger Welsch has produced a book to be treasured. Here are jokes, anecdotes, legends, tall tales, and lugubriously funny poems about the things that preoccupied the pioneer plainsman: weather extremes; soil quality; food and whiskey; an arkload of animals, including grasshoppers, bed bugs, hoop snakes, the ubiquitous mule, and some mighty big fish; and even sickness and the poverty that would inspire black laughter again in the Great Depression. Catfish at the Pump proves abundantly that the art of story telling was practiced diligently by our plains ancestors. Roger Welsch, who brought out Shingling the Fog and Other Plains Lies in 1972 (reprinted by the University of Nebraska Press in 1980), now issues this "book about lies and liars," knowing full well that "underlying the pioneer sense of humor is a profound respect for truth."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of channel catfish farming in the United States serves as a model for the development of pond-based aquaculture industries worldwide. Channel catfish farming is the largest and economically most important aquaculture industry in the United States. In 2003, over 300,000 metric tons (662 million pounds) of channel catfish were processed, representing about half the total United States aquaculture production. Demand for farm-raised catfish is strong, with record processing years in 2002 and 2003. In 22 chapters written by active scientists in the field, Biology and Culture of Channel Catfish comprehensively synthesizes over 30 years of research on this American icon. Throughout the book, fundamental biological aspects of channel catfish are linked to practical culture techniques. Topics include: • Latest information on reproductive physiology, genetics, and breeding • Comprehensive treatment of catfish nutrition, feeds, and feeding practices • Water quality management and pond dynamics • In-depth review of immunology in channel catfish • Practical information on diseases and health management • Techniques for commercial culture, including innovative techniques such as raceways, recirculating systems, and partitioned aquaculture systems • Catfish economics and marketing • Exploration of environmental concerns, including recommended Best Management Practices

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a single convenient source of information that covers priority areas of research in channel catfish aquaculture. Recent Developments in Catfish Aquaculture compiles some of the latest research in the field as presented at the Catfish Research Symposium. The editors present a diverse collection of chapters that illustrates recent research efforts in catfish culture and shows the scope of research that is being conducted in nutrition, genetics, water quality management, economics, fish health, and pond production systems. Some of the contributing authors’chapters are developmental but many contain information that can be immediately applied to commercial situations to improve production efficiency. A variety of subjects are covered in this catfish resource, including: Health Issues: immunology, vaccination, selection, drug evaluation, nutritional causes Genetics: hybridization, selection Hatchery Management: new techniques to incubate eggs; control of fungus on developing eggs; evaluation of mechanical graders Production Economics: comparison of different approaches Water Quality: discovery and identification of an algae that kills catfish; off-flavor; water circulators Nutrition: effects of feed on growth and fattiness of fish; nutritionally induced health problems Food Technology: impedance microbiology for evaluation and safety of processed catfish Behavior: behavioral interactions and feeding behavior Recent Developments in Catfish Aquaculture shows the paradox that exists in catfish farming research. On one hand, extremely sophisticated research is being used to solve complex problems. On the other, the basic method of raising catfish has not yet been determined. Several chapters describe important new developments in the field and will lead to important breakthroughs and developments in the future. This volume is required reading for those conducting catfish research or catfish culture, including university and federal aquaculture researchers as well as students. They will find it useful as a reference guide, and catfish farmers will find it helpful as a guide to recent advances in production technology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Countless millions of fish disappear into water abstractions used for power generation, water supply, irrigation and other uses. As fish stocks become depleted, increasingly, countries around the world see this as a threat to sustainability and are seeking to minimise these losses through legislation and introduction of best practice guidance on fish screening. In March 2011 the Institute of Fisheries Management, in the United Kingdom, organised a two-day conference which attracted international experts from the UK, Europe and the USA. Presenting key papers from the meeting this book will be of interest to academics, students, practitioners and environmental regulators everywhere.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flowing Water Fish Culture provides an in-depth discussion of the husbandry of fin fish in a stream of water. It guides the reader through the technical considerations of intensive aquaculture, including fish growth rates, hydraulic characteristics of fish rearing units, oxygen consumption rates in relation to oxygen solubility and fish tolerance of hypoxia, and water reconditioning by reaeration and ammonia filtration. Unlike other publications that provide only general overviews on the subject, this text/reference offers specific details that will be useful in the actual design and operation of a facility. Problem sets at the end of each chapter provide ample opportunity to develop skills. The information in the book is valuable for those teaching, considering, or practicing aquaculture at intensity levels ranging from conventional single-pass trout hatcheries to closed aquaculture systems.

Book excerpt: Learn the history of aquaponics and how to build your own system. When it comes to keeping up with a garden, people normally will go through the trouble of keeping up with watering and being concerned about how much fertilizer to use and being concerned about the weather conditions. Mostly, these types of concerns will come from a lack of research or a lack of understanding in the surrounding environment. Being able to grow any kind of plant takes a lot of work since it always will require more attention to the actual land and soil rather than the growth of the actual plant. This alone makes it stressful to start a personal garden outside. The good news is that a new method of aquaponics makes it easier to go through the handles of gardening. It allows for a better atmosphere and a more pleasing view to look at. With a system involving the roots of plants and the feeding of fish, it is a more natural way to grow a plant. Normally, soil is used and constantly watered to keep it moist for the plant to feed on. Aquaponics allows for the plants to grow through only water and they are grown through the impact of the fish inside of the tank. In this book you will learn the history of aquaponics, the different types of systems and how to build one for yourself.

Book excerpt: In 1979, several graduate students in the Department of Fisheries and Allied Aquacultures at Auburn University met with one of the authors (CEB) and asked him to teach a new course on water supply for aqua culture. They felt that information on climatology, hydrology, water distribution systems, pumps, and wells would be valuable to them. Most of these students were planning to work in commercial aquaculture in the United States or abroad, and they thought that such a cdurse would better prepare them to plan aquaculture projects and to communicate with engineers, contractors, and other specialists who often become involved in the planning and construction phases of aquaculture en deavors. The course was developed, and after a few years it was decided that more effective presentation of some of the material could be made by an engineer. The other author (KHY) accepted the challenge, and three courses on the water supply aspects of aquaculture are now offered at Auburn University. A course providing background in hydrology is followed by courses on selected topics from water supply engineering. Most graduate programs in aquaculture at other universities will even tually include similar coursework, because students need a formal intro duction to this important, yet somewhat neglected, part of aquaculture. We have written this book to serve as a text for a course in water supply for aquaculture or for individual study. The book is divided into is concerned two parts.
