Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Moths and Butterflies These little wasp-like creatures lay their eggs on or in the large moth or butterfly caterpillars. From these eggs develop small grubs that live upon the body of the caterpillar, either seriously weakening the caterpillar or killing it. You may sometime find a caterpillar that looks as though it had groups of small white cocoons over it. It is. Probable that these are the cocoons of one Of these wasp-like parasites that caterpillar OF 10 moth feeds upon the caterpillars. It is The hairs on the back of this caterpillar are poisoned and produce a most disagreeable sensation interesting to know in connection with these wasp-like parasites that they are fully as particular about what they eat as are the caterpillars themselves. The mother wasp will not lay her eggs on just any Old caterpillar any more than will most caterpillars eat just any old green stuff. It is very interesting and important to know about this, particularly when caterpillars are introduced into a new country. If we should accidentally or intentionally bring the eggs Of some cater pillar that thrived On some of our food plants into our country and fail at the same time to bring in its natural enemies, we might have great difficulty in raising those particular food plants successfully. This has happened so frequently that our government has established a_ system whereby plants brought into our country are examined for the purpose of preventing the introduction of injurious insects, some of which might be moth and butterfly caterpillars. For the same reason our government justly demands that certain materials growing in certain areas shall not be moved into other areas. If you read the account Of the fight being made against the gipsy moth, which appeared in the September, 1924, Leaflet, you may get some idea Of how serious a proposition this may be. The September, 1920, Leaflet told you also of the campaign tolimit the activities Of the European corn borer. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Caterpillars and Their Moths After more than twenty years of studying and rearing moths, of much hunting for information which was not always to be found, of answering the many questions of many children, parents, and teachers, we have decided to put the results of a part of our experience into a form which may help beginners to avoid our mistakes, to escapes the ill results of ignorance, and to get more satisfaction with less failure than we had. Therefore we have tried to put into this book all the facts needed for successful work in rearing moths, as much structural detail as beginners need to know, an account of the appliances we have found most useful, and a list of the books which we have used most. To this information we have added life-histories of forty-three species which may be found throughout a wide range of our country, and of each species we have given a picture of the larva and the moth, male and female being shown when they differ much. These life-histories are not taken from the accounts of other persons, but are exact statements of our own experiences and experiments. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “For the lover of all things lepidopterous, The Book of Caterpillars is a beautifully curated collection and guide to 600 species from around the globe.” —The American Biology Teacher While most of us picture caterpillars as cute fuzzballs munching on leaves, there is much more to them than we imagine. A caterpillar’s survival hinges on finding enough food and defending itself from the array of natural enemies lined up to pounce and consume. And the astounding adaptations and strategies they have developed to maximize their chances of becoming a butterfly or moth are only just beginning to be understood, from the Spicebush Swallowtail caterpillar that resembles a small snake to the Eastern Carpenter Bee Hawkmoth caterpillar that attempts to dissuade potential predators by looking like a diseased leaf. The Book of Caterpillars unveils the mysteries of six hundred species from around the world, introducing readers to the complexity and beauty of these underappreciated insects. With the advent of high-quality digital macrophotography, the world of caterpillars is finally opening up. The book presents a wealth of stunning imagery that showcases the astonishing diversity of caterpillar design, structure, coloration, and patterning. Each entry also features a two-tone engraving of the adult specimen, emphasizing the wing patterns and shades, as well as a population distribution map and table of essential information that includes their habitat, typical host plants, and conservation status. Throughout the book are fascinating facts that will enthrall expert entomologists and curious collectors alike. A visually rich and scientifically accurate guide to six hundred of the world’s most peculiar caterpillars, this volume presents readers with a rare, detailed look at these intriguing forms of insect life.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Meadow Caterpillar Because of the striking appearance and the peculiar habits of both the caterpillar and the moth, this meadow insect attracts attention even when not abundant. If the weight of numbers should be added to its conspicuousness, interest in its manner of life and economic status, naturally, would be increased. That it is a common insect in Maine, is indicated by the fact that these moths have been noticeable every summer for the past seventeen years or more and that the caterpillars are frequently sent to the Station for determination during thaw spells in early spring before the snow has disappeared - a time, in this part of the country, when an active insect is in itself a curiosity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This lavishly illustrated guide will enable you to identify the caterpillars of nearly 700 butterflies and moths found east of the Mississippi. The more than 1,200 color photographs and two dozen line drawings include numerous exceptionally striking images. The giant silk moths, tiger moths, and many other species covered include forest pests, common garden guests, economically important species, and of course, the Mescal Worm and Mexican Jumping Bean caterpillars. Full-page species accounts cover almost 400 species, with up to six images per species including an image of the adult plus succinct text with information on distribution, seasonal activity, foodplants, and life history. These accounts are generously complemented with additional images of earlier instars, closely related species, noteworthy behaviors, and other intriguing aspects of caterpillar biology. Many caterpillars are illustrated here for the first time. Dozens of new foodplant records are presented and erroneous records are corrected. The book provides considerable information on the distribution, biology, and taxonomy of caterpillars beyond that available in other popular works on Eastern butterflies and moths. The introductory chapter covers caterpillar structure, life cycles, rearing, natural enemies, photography, and conservation. The section titled "Caterpillar Projects" will be of special interest to educators. Given the dearth of accessible guides on the identification and natural history of caterpillars, Caterpillars of Eastern North America is a must for entomologists and museum curators, forest managers, conservation biologists and others who seek a compact, easy-to-use guide to the caterpillars of this vast region. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Caterpillar and Butterly However there lay the eggs on the cab bage leaf, and the green Caterpillar in the kindness of her heart resolved to do her best. But she had no sleep that night, she was so very anxious. She walked all night long around her young charges, for fear some harm might come to them, and in the morning she said to herself: I will consult some wise animal upon the matter and get advice Two heads are certainly better than one. But still there was a difficulty. Whom should the Caterpillar consult? There was the shaggy dog, who some times came into the garden, but he would not be likely to know anything about a butterfly or its eggs. Then, too, there was the cat, who would sometimes sit at the foot of the apple tree basking himself in the sun and warming his fur, but he never talked with butterflies so his experience would not be of much use.
