Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report provides the results of a study conducted to determine the effectiveness of catalytic oxidation for destroying vapor phase chlorinated hydrocarbons. The study was conducted on two pilot scale catalytic incinerator systems leased from vendors. One system employed a metal oxide catalyst in a fluidized bed configuration. The other system used a fixed bed proprietary catalyst, supplemented with UV light and ozone injection. Both systems were tested under a variety of temperatures and space velocities. The test vapor streams consisted of low concentrations (3 to 200 ppmv) mixtures of organic compounds, and included three streams which represented the emissions from air strippers used to treat contaminated groundwater at U.S. Air Force bases. The study results showed that the fluidized bed catalytic incinerator system was capable of achieving total organic destruction efficiencies of greater than 98%. The UV/ozone catalytic system failed to achieve high destruction efficiencies; with ozone injection, total destruction was 75%; without ozone, the maximum destruction efficiency was 64%.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 39 (thesis year 1994) a total of 13,953 thesis titles from 21 Canadian and 159 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 39 reports theses submitted in 1994, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chlorinated hydrocarbons, commonly existing in industrial waste streams, are serious environmental pollutants. The catalytic hydrodechlorination is a promising method for converting chlorocarbons to less hazardous species. The density functional theory (DFT) has been shown as a powerful tool for heterogeneous catalysis research but was rarely adopted to study the hydrodechlorination chemistry. In this dissertation, we employ DFT-based approaches to investigate the hydrodechlorination mechanisms of two model chlorocarbon molecules, 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCA) and chloroform, over transition-metal catalysts. The catalytic hydrodechlorination of 1,2-DCA produces both ethane and ethylene, with the latter being the desired product. For this chemistry, we first examined the Cl coverage on a range of transition metals under typical hydrodechlorination conditions and its effect on the reaction thermochemistry. Detailed mechanistic studies were then performed on Pt(111) and PtxCuy(111) surfaces through a combined theoretical and experimental approach. Lastly, we present a descriptor-based scheme which enables efficient search of ethylene-selective 1,2-DCA hydrodechlorination catalysts. Regarding chloroform hydrodechlorination, the structure sensitivity of this reaction was first examined using DFT calculations on three different Pd facets. A comparative study on Pd(111) and PdML/Au(111) was then performed to elucidate the promotion role of Au in Pd-Au bimetallic catalysts. The results of our DFT-based studies offer valuable insights into the hydrodechlorination mechanisms on transition-metal catalysts, which are missing from previous experimental studies in the literature.

This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transition metal oxide-based systems as catalysts for oxidative reactions are studied. Utilizing aerobic oxygen as a cost-efficient and benign oxidant is explored for alcohol oxidation reactions. A detailed magnetic study is performed to understand the active phases of manganese oxide catalysts. The role of a well-known homogeneous copper oxide catalyst in an oxidation reaction is explored for making alcohols from aliphatic hydrocarbons. Finally, virtual screening techniques are explored in a preliminary study for materials discovery. In chapter I, aerobic transformation of alcohols is studied by mesoporous manganese oxide and cobalt oxide species. Catalyst optimization, characterization and substrate scope experimentation is performed for self-esterification of alcohols and aldehydes. In chapter II, a comprehensive magnetic characterization of mesoporous manganese oxide species is provided. While conventional methods do not lead to definitive phase determination, magnetic transitions and spin eco NMR techniques prove the mixed phase of meso MnOx materials. In chapter III, a synthetic copper complex is studied. The complex was modeled after the active site of particulate methane monooxygenase (pMMO). A detailed study of the complex structure, reaction medium and by- products showed that an important side reaction interfered with hydrocarbon oxidation. The nitrile solvent decomposes to amide by nucleophilic interactions from hydrogen peroxide. In the final chapter, preliminary computational screening tools are introduced. Extraction of geometrical features of molecular structures and evaluation of total energy with machine learning algorithms are performed and the ground work for application of such work to crystalline materials is proposed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The different methods for enhancing the catalytic activity of transition metal complexes in hydrocarbon (particularly, alkylarene) oxidations with dioxygen are briefly discussed. The role played by H-bonds in mechanisms of homogeneous catalysis is also analysed. Furthermore, the authors propose a strategy of controlling the catalytic activity of Fe(II,III)(acac)nL2 complexes (L2 = R4NBr or 18C6) by adding H2O to small concentrations. In addition, the activity of Ni, Fe, and Co catalysts in microsteps of chain initiation (O2 activation), and propagation (Cat + RO2?) in the radical chain process of ethylbenzene oxidation is assessed by original method offered by authors. New concepts of mechanism of chain process of hydrocarbon oxidations with dioxygen, catalysed with transition metal complexes, participation of catalysts in microsteps of complicated hydrocarbon oxidation, activity M-O2 (M = Co, Ni, Fe) complexes in different oxidation reactions are briefly stated, and the self-assembled (self-organised) systems mediated by transition metals are briefly considered in connection with increasing research interest in chemical transformations with use of these systems.
