Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rise and Decline and Rise of China: Searching for an Organising Philosophy represents a new and promising approach to Africa/China relations. What is most impressive is that it is an encounter between African and Chinese thought, but this encounter is not just a set of stale comparisons of philosophical beliefs. This study places the concepts and attitudes in both China and Africa in their socio-political contexts, in an attempt to provide a sophisticated, sensitive, and usable history. This attempt yields dividends, especially for the primary audience of Africans, as it gives a way of learning from the vast history of Chinese experience without reducing African experience to insignificance or irrelevance (as has happened so often in dialogues between Africa and the West). This book will be of interest to anyone from within Africa interested in engaging with China as a complex and nuanced place, a place of challenge, creativity, and opportunity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collection of essays in this volume offers an overview of scholarly approaches to the ways in which diverse actors, representing the colonised or the colonising nations, or indeed the international community, reacted to colonialism during the lifetime of the modern colonial empires or in their aftermath. The coverage is broad in terms of geographical scope and historical period, with articles on the major colonial empires in Asia and Africa and the imperial centres of Paris, London and Berlin, from the conquests of the late nineteenth century to the period of decolonisation. The selection also reflects recent academic trends by focusing on countries whose colonial past and experience of decolonisation have been studied and debated with particular intensity, such as Algeria, Kenya and India. The volume draws on previously published articles and book chapters by leading international scholars writing in, or translated into, English and includes a critical introduction which situates each essay in relation to recent debates in this dynamic and expanding field of study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The resurgence of Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism in the context of Chinese leadership values has emerged as a foundation for a new generation of leaders. The once-in-a-decade transition of China’s leadership witnessed the ascendency of a consensus-oriented fifth generation of leaders supporting a central authoritative figure whose priority will likely include the reconciliation of a waning communist ideology juxtaposed with its ostensible embrace of capitalism. How will Chinese Communist Party authority, ideology, and control address the encroachment of Western values that are centered on Roman law, Greek philosophy, and Christian religion which prioritizes individual freedom and democracy? This book examines the role of traditional Chinese values, ideology, and philosophy as a key determinant in modern China’s leadership succession. The author asserts that, as communist ideology wanes, Chinese leaders will turn to their own traditional values found in Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism to establish legitimacy to rule as they seek to promote Chinese prominence and greatness in the world. The author’s research assesses China’s promotion of its own traditional values in rejecting foreign value influence. Since the inception of modern China at the beginning of the 20th century, China’s leadership transition has evolved from an authoritarian, cult-like dictatorship to a consensus-oriented process. In researching this metamorphosis, this book offers social, political, cultural, and historical perspectives to demonstrate that Chinese human values and character factors have risen in prominence as key elements in the mandate of Chinese governance and leadership. The author concludes that Chinese leadership values and its study and diffusion across sectors of Chinese leadership—including business, organizations, and government—have become a means to accentuate Chinese values as a viable alternative to Western claims of absolute and universally accepted values.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fossil fuels have been key to major powers' foreign policies for a long time. In the context of the current global energy transition, renewables and low-carbon technologies are emerging as elements that can have a similarly important impact on twenty-first century world politics. Green Superpowers: China, the European Union, and the United States in the Global Energy Transition offers an in-depth comparative analysis of the green foreign energy policies and green power strategies of the three main international actors in this transformative process: China, the European Union, and the United States. These green superpowers alone account for about half of global carbon dioxide emissions, which is the primary driver of climate change, and they are frontrunners in the global race for promoting and deploying renewables and innovative low-carbon technologies. To analyse this changing landscape, Prontera combines insights from international political economy, comparative public policy, international relations, and energy policy scholarship. The book develops an original framework for mapping and studying the green foreign energy policies and green power strategies of major international actors and applies this framework to shed light on the recent efforts of China, the European Union, and the US. In doing so, it illustrates the links between the domestic green approaches that these green superpowers are promoting and their external actions regarding renewables and low-carbon technologies, whilst drawing attention to the limits and potential of green power strategies in the transition away from fossil fuels and the struggles to address a mounting climate crisis.

Book excerpt: Despite China's desire to make its rapid ascendance in the 21st century as non provocative as possible, the key to ensure China's peaceful rise lies in two-way integration and engagement. A closely integrated China with the rest of the world and China's acceptance of existing international norms and rules may compel China to behave in a more predictable and responsive way. This co-edited book examines China's rising military capacity and the complex feelings its neighbors, such as Taiwan, South Korea and India, have toward the increasingly powerful China. The focus of this book is on the efforts made by China to brand her non-aggressive image through promoting public diplomacy and expanding regional free trade and cooperation in Asia and Latin America. It uses the cross-Taiwan-strait relations as a testing ground for the prospect of peace between the two former adversaries. China's Quiet Rise will help readers understand why integration, instead of isolation and containment, may be the most effective way to facilitate China's peaceful rise.
