Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of the Private Library of Mr. Adolph Lewisohn The collection of manuscripts is a very interesting one, including specimens of various schools and countries, well illustrating the art of manuscript illumination. Beginning with an early Thirteenth Century Psalter, on vellum, of the characteristic curious workmanship of the period; and an equally old vellum Psalter of curious German workmanship; and ranging through various periods we find an interesting manuscript in Arabic; an ancient Hebrew Cabalistic manuscript on vellum; several fine old illuminated examples of the Book of Esther written in Hebrew characters; two splendid Horae on vellum, with beautiful large miniatures; Martial's Epigrams, an Italian manuscript on the finest thin white vellum; a rare manuscript Mochsor in Hebrew characters; two Persian manuscripts with a large number of miniatures beautifully executed in gold and colors; an early rubricated Seneca; and continuing down to a Nineteenth Century Spanish manuscript on vellum, relating to heraldry. These fine examples are all illuminated and decorated or rubricated, and are all in an excellent state of preservation. Incunabula The collection is rich in early printed books, and Incunabula, or books printed in the half century following the invention of printing, are well represented. It is gratifying to find that the earliest was printed in Mainz, from which place printing spread through Germany to Italy. The splendid copy of Cicero's Officis was printed in Mainz in 1466 by Johannes Fust and Petrus de Gernsshem, the former of whom is supposed to have shared in the invention of printing with Gutenberg. Book Synopsis A History of American Literature and Culture of the First World War by : Tim Dayton
Download or read book A History of American Literature and Culture of the First World War written by Tim Dayton and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-02-04 with total page 749 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the years of and around the First World War, American poets, fiction writers, and dramatists came to the forefront of the international movement we call Modernism. At the same time a vast amount of non- and anti-Modernist culture was produced, mostly supporting, but also critical of, the US war effort. A History of American Literature and Culture of the First World War explores this fraught cultural moment, teasing out the multiple and intricate relationships between an insurgent Modernism, a still-powerful traditional culture, and a variety of cultural and social forces that interacted with and influenced them. Including genre studies, focused analyses of important wartime movements and groups, and broad historical assessments of the significance of the war as prosecuted by the United States on the world stage, this book presents original essays defining the state of scholarship on the American culture of the First World War.
Book Synopsis In the Presence of the Past by : R.T. Bienvenu
Download or read book In the Presence of the Past written by R.T. Bienvenu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-11 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The broad canvas covered by the articles in the present volume celebrates the diversity and richness of the writings of Frank Manuel during a scholarly career that spans over five decades. The subjects of the articles - ranging from science to utopia, from theology to political thought - mirror many of the themes Manuel has written about with erudition, flair and uncommon perception. It is only fitting that in paying tribute to such a defiant intellect each author brings to his treatment a distinct perspective and texture, the result of his own original forays into the history of ideas. Yet underlying all the essays is the conviction that the study of the intersection of individuals and ideas still yields a rich harvest. Presented to Frank on the occasion of his eightieth birthday, In the Presence o/the Past honors a teacher, a friend and, above all, a scholar. R. T. Bienvenu and M. Feingold (eds). ln the presence of the past. vii. MARTIN PERETZ Frank Manuel: An Appreciation It was finally because of Frank Edward Manuel that I decided (however belatedly) to forgo a proper academic career. Since I had not left so much as a leafscar on the tree of the scholarly culture this is not a fact which anyone else would have reason to notice. It is also not, I am happy to add, something for which Manuel will be especially remembered.
